I finished tacking the NA setup together last night. Tonight I want to get working on the jigs and finish finalizing boxes. Plan is to start shipping setups next week. The first 2 should go out early in the week and I will hopefully get some more out towards the later half of the week.

Once I have all the jigs done I will finish welding the first 2 setups. Then I will probably be building all 7 down pipes at once. Then go from there. I have found I go quicker if I am building all of the same thing at once. So after down pipes will probably be NB mid pipes, then NA mid pipes, then NA axle backs.

Sounds like I need to get my rear in gear on my supporting mods!!

Do you ever step back and say "why the hell am I doing this?".

I would. Looks like a lot of work, glad you're the one doing it all :)

edit: It is a water cooled only turbo right? Ever come up with a fitting/lines solution?

nigelt 03-19-2015 01:28 AM

^ this. I'm glad I didn't go DIY on my hot side.

Are these the watercooled fittings for the mk turbo setup?

MK Turbo setup is oil only journal bearing. I used - 8AN drain and - 4AN for supply.

ysleem 03-19-2015 11:31 AM

Sorry I meant oil lines.

nigelt 03-19-2015 11:40 AM

Lars, you are doing an oil line kit as well right? Any update on that, or should the beta users go DIY on the oil lines?

Every afternoon when I am spending 2-4 hours after working 8 hours at my normal job I go WTF did I get myself into. Then I remember I fight for the users and keep going.

Turbo is oil cooled only. I will be selling a oil line setup that has all the fittings needed and lines. I can also give you the lengths of the lines if you want to do all that yourself.

I don't have an update on the oil line kit yet. I have not had the time to get up to the hydraulic store to nail down a price of everything I get from there. I am also cross shopping the fittings for the turbo between a few vendors. I will give out part numbers for the people who want to go the DIY route for turbo fittings. I expect the oil line kit to be in the $150-175 range. It is a bit high, but oil lines are one thing I do not cheap out on. The local hydraulic shop only sells aeroquip and out of all the AN fittings I have used over the years they are the best.

This morning I stopped by a local box maker to get a quote on what custom sized boxes will cost from them. I have gotten quotes online for boxes, but because of their size shipping was a big high. Box sizes are approximately 70"x14"x11" for the down pipe box and 45"x25"x11" for the axle back and down pipe box. Boxes online would be about $30 for the 2 custom ones, but about $20 per 2 to ship to me. I think $50 for boxes is a bit high so I am trying to get it cheap to pass the savings on to you gays. The plus side is that because of the redesign UPS shipping costs will be a bit cheaper. The mid pipe box looks to be around $65 to get from the East cost to the West cost. The axle back and down pipe box will be about $65 also from East to West. Closer distances to Charleston will obviously be cheaper. In total I am guessing total shipping costs and boxes to be in the $125-200 range depending on where in the US you are. This is much better then initial $160 to just ship the axle back how it was originally designed.

As for updates of actual building the setups, both the NA and NB redesigns are done. I have the NB setups completely jigged. The NA setups will be getting jigs made this weekend. I started tacking together downpipes last night. I want to get all 8 of those tacked together so I can test fit each setup as I do the rest of the exhausts. Every setup will best tested for fitment on a NA or NB before they get final welding done.

I have one small change that I will be making on the downpipes. I will be going to a 2.5" flex pipe instead of a 3". This is just to make the install of the downpipe in the engine bay easier. This change should not affect build times in any way.

Great update Lars!

shuiend 03-23-2015 10:37 AM

Just got my quote for boxes from the local maker. It will be $40 for the 2 custom boxes. I am going to place my order for 10 of them to start. Cheapest I could find online was $50 shipped for the 2 custom boxes.

Here is some proof that I am actually building setups for you all. Right now I have 3 NB axle backs complete. 1.5 NA axle backs complete, with the other 2 just needing to be welded together. All the jigs are done except for NA mid pipe. Need to get some more metal today to make it.

Excellent work shuiend :)
My only problem, I have an unmodified 1991 with 1.6L!

I'm curious about your oil line kit for $150-175, are you getting those with stainless braid? Or is Aeroquip always with braid. I don't even know.

You mentioned at the start, that if you absolutely must have a CARB certified system, then we should go with Begi, Jackson Racing, or FFS.
Which of those would be the next-best thing?
