Fab9Tuning's NC MX-5 Turbo Kit Discussion- EFR/Garrett V-Band

14 Attachment(s)
We're currently in possession of a 2006 MX-5 (customer vehicle) and just a few nights ago we picked up our own NC (white sport package).

With the success of our previous NA/NB EFR/Garrett V-Band Side Mount turbo system we've decided to repeat the process on the NC platform.

These will NOT be entry level, will NOT be mild steel budget kits that simply "work", we've set out to produce a premium kit with top quality components at a price that wont break the bank. Full stainless, schedule construction that flows inside as good as it looks on the outside.

All three of the first vehicles will be using the EFR 6758 V-Band Internally Gated, Internal BOV turbocharger. The 2006 is a 2.5 swapped car, we've designed the flange with larger ports to accommodate each 2.0L and 2.5L with the maximum flow - with 1/2" Stainless construction.

Features:
• Precision tig welded, fully back-purged
• Full Stainless Construction
• Thick Sch40 primaries (321 is stabilized with Titanium for the ultimate in crack resistance)
• 0.500” CNC’d Flange
• Smooth round Port Transitions
• High Flow Merge Collector
• Bottom Mount AC + PS Compatible Design
• No cutting or modification of the engine bay
• Entire setup ships under our $9 shipping program (Continental US)
• Premium Bar/Plate FMIC with full aluminum charge pipes

If you are interested in a discounted rate for the first batch of kits completed please reach out to us Products@Fab9Tuning.com

Today's updates:

The last NA/NB manifold order has been fulfilled and now we're full steam ahead on the NC's.

Turbo of choice for the first 4 kits is going to be the EFR 6758 from BorgWarner. We've decided to use their new full Aluminum supercore. They weigh considerably less, have better cooling properties and won't rust like the previous iron counterparts. The 6758 will produce power VERY quickly on a 2.0L and as you'd expect a 2.5L swapped NC will be even more responsive.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441931994

We're finally happy with the flange design and will have a production version in our hands within 24 hours.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1441931994

The first customer car has already been turbocharged with a kit he's not satisfied with - This is where our completely stock NC will come in handy for all of the small bits that we could have never anticipated without it (relocation of the battery, cooling components, stock air box).

The engine bay in our NC is so untouched it hurts. I'd usually say it's a shame but I'm thrilled to have such a clean canvas to start with.

I'm not looking to hurt feelings, I'd like to let our results do that. :dealwithit:

At some point I'm sure the customer will communicate who produced the existing kit but until then I'll focus on producing a superior product.

Ed, that's what I thought - just a well kept car I suppose.

18psi 09-11-2015 10:54 AM

Man, a 2.5 swap with a well breathing EFR6258 setup would probably result in LSx-like lowend torque

Knowing Bryan, most likely an AEM EMS4

I really hope not. There is absolutely no reason not to use the OEM ecu

Sorry that statement was made under the assumption the stock ECU could not be retained.

Stock ECU is fully capable. We will even be on a hybrid MAF/MAP setup.

Tearing down the old system we've found a number of issues.

The turbo itself is wearing into the engine mount:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1442261044

This is his second Garrett turbo in less than 5k miles and we believe it's because of the oil supply and return line positions. We will have to find better locations for them.

The WG to manifold connection looks to be broken clean off or was a very poorly designed slip joint that was leaking, not a very conventional way of handling a pressure area responsible for controlling boost:

We're waiting on tooling for the flange, in the mean time we've dusted off the old 3D printer and produced a PLA version and it's truly a work of art.

Everything checks out and we're full speed ahead on the manifold... More updates to come.

albuquerquefx 09-15-2015 06:29 PM

Ready!

I specifically purchased an NC2 (2009 and later, purportedly has stronger rods and 6spd manual trans) for boost. I first saw this over on m.net and then saw it again here, and have fired off an email to Fab9 to see if I can qualify to get in on the early adopters list.

I'm excited about the choice of turbo on this kit, and I'm also looking for specifically a serious business (TM) level of power from the stock internals. And if I blow my shit up, I'll just have to rebuild with better parts and go again :D

Currently, the car roadmap is:
 • Subframe bracing: Done. The full set of Good Win Racing braces, plus the ILM "X" brace and rear butterfly are installed.
 • Suspension: Done. Flyin' Miata Stage 2, with Tokico HTS adjustable shocks, springs, and front and rear swaybars. I've also got a set of the adjustable endlinks inbound.
 • Brakes: Ordered, not shipped. Flyin' Miata "LBBK" Wilwood aluminum 4-pot kit for all four corners.
 • Wheels to fit brakes: Not ordered. Enkei PF01SS 17x8, 235/40R17 extreme-summer rubber
 • Radiator: Not ordered. 38mm aftermarket unit with updated fans and relays
 • Oil cooler with thermostat: Not ordered. Fab9's part looks to be the best offering
 • Clutch: Not ordered. Leaning to the carbon/carbon units I've seen, haven't truly decided yet.
 • BOOST: Not ordered. Turbo is the only answer, figure if I can get traction in 3rd gear, I've done it wrong.

I'm working through this list in the presented order. I can accelerate the project if doing so results in cost or labor savings.

Edit: I have an active build thread over on m.net including pictures of the car and the parts going on: http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=585658

18psi 09-15-2015 06:32 PM

/\ Sounds like you're on the right track and will fit right in :likecat:

Any ballpark on price and what all will be included? Will it just be the manifold/turbo/downpipe?

I was very close to buying an ND off the lot or ordering one, but a fast, turbo, street PRHT NC and keeping my 01 as a track car would cost about the same and be multi-purpose...

BoostedSmurf 09-16-2015 04:00 PM

I need an NC.

We're aiming to price it competitively but at this point I can't even shoot form the hips until we start to make complete kits and produce them in higher volume.

It will be a relatively complete hardware kit, battery solution, intercooler, manifold, downpipe, charge pipes, turbo and even an add on tuning solution with a fuel package.

TurboTim 09-17-2015 10:18 AM

Who builds your downpipes? Do you give them a finished hand fabbed/prototype that they digitize or do you give them a CAD model? Just wondering. I have no interest in getting back into it.

Great job FAB!

EDIT: really interested in how the EFR 6758 works with the 2.5.

We jig based on the hand fabbed prototype.

A little more progress today, we've determined placement - it's a tight fit as the IWG EFR is quite a bit bigger than the EWG configuration. With that locked down the manifold collector can be produced and it came out looking like jewelry.

I've seen flanges like that for other cars, but not the miata. Huge fan of the minimalist designs. Gets rid of a lot of the expansion issues people add relief cuts for on the standard flanges.

albuquerquefx 09-22-2015 11:42 AM

I received word a short while ago that I've made it into the Fab9 pre-production testing group.

Awww.
Yisss.

Unless it makes everyone on this forum stupidly angry, I'll maintain the detailed build thread over here on the Miata.net build sub-forum but will continue to post summary updates in this thread and in Fab9's turbo kit thread on M.NET.

My FM brakes haven't shipped just yet, but now I need to hurry my butt up and get the wheels, tires, clutch ordered and installed. I also want to get the radiator and oil cooler ordered and primed to install along with the rest of the kit... Good thing my annual company bonus pays on in the second week of October :D

You might want to consider making a Build Thread here on Miataturbo.net. This will become especially useful if you run into issues down the road and need request help or insight. There are some very knowledgeable members here the more info you post here, the easier it'll be to enlist their help. Just a thought, it's up to you though.

I suppose that makes sense, just a bunch more cross-posting between forums :D

If we're going to get snarky: people with detailed questions: follow URL, not difficult. Easier even then reposting every update :D

That's only if we're going to be snarky, though. I may build a turbo-specific build thread here on this forum, just because (obviously) the folks who know boost are over on this side of the fence. It's certainly worth my while to facilitate the discussion over here :)

18psi 09-22-2015 05:42 PM

The problem, is that most of us don't visit that site. Ever.
Not even being snarky or joking, or anything.
This place has everything most of us need :)

It'd be a shame not to see progress of your nice NC

The intercooler of choice is a Vibrant core - full bar/plate with their latest high density fin design.

We've designed end tanks in CAD and are waiting for the waterjet work to be completed. To ensure fitment we've mocked up end tanks and everything checks out. These cores are perfect for the power output range expected for this kit. From the guys running stock internals and lower boost to the forged 500hp setups. At some point we will explore a 550hp+ option with the same charge pipe locations.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1443019082

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1443019082

We continue to receive PM/Emails related to beta participation - As soon as we have a more accurate ETA on these kits we will offer limited pre-order participation available through our website.

albuquerquefx 09-23-2015 12:43 PM

Are you possibly considering optional IC and/or charge pipes colored with black ceramic / powdercoat? I intend to keep my whole car on the sleeper DL wherever feasible. Even if it's not something you guys are intending at the outset, I'll probably grab all the charge pipes and the IC and have them professionally coated in a matte black.

By the way, that's a good lookin' intercooler :D

We have not, the solution we'll be using is very a comprehensive solution using the stock ECU. The plan is to run a hybrid MAF/MAP configuration to keep perfect drivability in the off boost and transitional periods, then utilize the accuracy of a MAP sensor in higher load areas of the tune. Impressively, this can all be done with the factory ECU.

ihiryu 09-24-2015 06:34 PM

Very nice! I wasn't aware. I've always hated NC's but after this thread....I find them a bit more attractive.

Just a quick update - we're testing some end tank designs on the Vibrant core. Should have a finalized setup this weekend. The production version will include internal baffling for even distribution of air (often a fault of top inlet/outlet intercoolers).

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1443202912

There has been a lot of chatter around pricing and we're confident it will still remain at a competitive price point. I'd like to outline that the most expensive (and most important) part of the system is the EFR turbocharger itself. This is a bit like shopping for a PC, you'll pay more for a powerful processor but I assure you, you wont regret it.

Small update - Things with the machine shop have been further delayed but we aren't letting that hold us back. We are producing a few of our own to cover the pre-production kits.

This is just the Water Jet blank that will be setup on the CNC tonight for the 3D/2.5D features of the design.

With the completion of the flanges, we're pulling 10 hour days to satisfy the donor vehicle deadline. Quickly following that, our bone stock NC will be used for pre-production sold kits and jigging. Each will be jigged to ensure compatibility between the 2.0 and 2.5 swapped vehicles, if we see major differences we will make adjustments accordingly.

After determining proper placement we're now full speed ahead! - Spending enough time with eyes on this setup, it's incredible that we were able to achieve clearance in EVERY dimension without modification to the vehicle or sacrificing the design. The last thing we want is to ask an end user to trim their engine bay, grind their engine mounts or bend lines (nearly all of these were done during the installation of this previous turbo kit, and it was still hitting the engine mounts).

As stated before the most important aspects of this manifold were to achieve a full flowing collector and zero awkward kinks in the schedule elbows. CHECK. These limitations left us with a very unique piece of artwork that will flow just as good as it looks.

Keep in mind this piece is only tacked up - none of the colorful tig welding magic has happened yet but we're thrilled to be able to update you soon.

We've modified the flange to allow easy installation with the studs installed. You can see here the far stud location is now open:

Brian,

Everything you've posted is absolutely gorgeous. I'm quite literally saddened that all of this incredibly beautiful work will be hidden under a hood. My father-in-law and two brothers-in-law are genuine car guys, and I've been forwarding your pics along to them. They're all amazed at the attention to detail and fabrication skills involved.

Father in law has a 68 Stingray convertable, younger brother-in-law has a hopped up STI, and older brother in law has an LS-swapped 90's 3-series frankenstein of some sort. All three are now chomping at the bit to come down and drive the Miata when it's done :D
