At 200whp you already have problems with diff temps, but nobody measures so nobody's the wiser. If you were to seriously race a car 10+ times a year at 300-350whp, I'd suggest re-greasing the CVs at least once or twice a year.

since i'm re-wiring the car, maybe i'll bite the bullet and just install the cooler. was looking at something like this. i thought the geared lsd's run cooler than the clutch lsd's so we should consider ourselves lucky?
whos running a cooler anyway? bbundy fessed to sans cooler so i'm guessing not too many

So, resurrection but I think it is worthwhile for those who are considering crazy power Miatas for road racing, time trials, or HPDE. The discussion above is a good one.
I am actually ZX-Tex BTW but I cannot get my old account going again for some weird reason.
In today's world of 1000+ HP LS swapped skateboards, I can see the temptation to go really big on power. But, 300 WHP is about all you need IMO in a Miata, and 200 HP is plenty. Even stock Spec Miata is 'enough' when you consider that the front running Spec Miata drivers routinely set much faster lap times than the HPDE Joe Blows in their Corvettes and Porsches.
In my (dynoed) 320 WHP LS1 1999 Miata track car, with a F-Body T-56, an Allison Trutrac diff (like a Torsen) and 3:55 gears, I am traction limited in 1st (completely useless), 2nd (99% useless), and also 3rd (on corner exits). This is on fresh 275 A6 Hoosiers on 15x11 6ULs with a completely not-stock race suspension setup, and full aero. Full race cage, fully gutted interior. This car is completely not stock; everything has been modified in some way or removed if not needed.
The car will do 148 MPH on the back straight at CoTA (20 Hz GPS verified) in 5th gear before I have to brake HARD for turn 12. The only existing tracks where I use 5th gear are the really fast ones: CoTA (looong back straight), NOLA (long front straight), and formerly TWS (also had a long front straight).
The point of all this is, if you have to go that big on power, OK. But, really, 300 WHP is a lot of power for a track Miata when you are trying to push to the absolute limit. Keep in mind that though I am not Michael Schumacher, I don't suck. I did OK when I was actively racing: Got trophies, won tires, 6-8 seconds faster than Spec Miata pole, instructor, NASA ST and TT, that kind of stuff.
Before you go big, carefully consider the advice of those above who race modified Miatas. Their wisdom is hard earned.

Thanks for the wisdom! I totally agree and the rabbit hole is deep when you have a high power track car. I think anyone tracking a high power miata has thought at some point that they should have just done a much more basic low power car as they chase the next weak link in their build.
That said, I bet your car is ******* awesome. Any updates from the last 10 years? At least some pics!

I still have the car. Right now the trans is stuck in 3rd gear (weird) so I am going to pull it and send it to Liberty Gear for repair; I don't like doing transmissions. Other than that it is dialed and a solid car on the track. I've had to back off of racing for personal reasons but plan to at least get back to TTs as soon as I am able. In the mean time I am going to make it street legal again (barely) with lights and a horn so I can channel my inner hooligan and scare the crap out of passengers.
I may just say **** it and max the power for NASA TT1/ST1 which I could do with a cam swap. Or, heed my own advice, leave well enough alone, and stay in TT2/ST2. I am already up against what we call 'The Corvette Mafia' and going to ST1 only makes that worse; ST1 at least in the Texas Region is a really, really fast class.
