If it's ducted and still overheating perhaps you might benefit from hood vents to reduce pressure behind the exchangers?

 

Fans, at best, can only give you the air flow for 12mph. If you're already going 70mph,all the fans won't help.

 

It is OK to walk away from Rumpelstiltskin Jackson Racing. It was hard to see fan boys (sorry Emilio) get excited two years ago and nothing. Now questionable integrated radiator/oil cooler, how much($) will that add to their system. Let them get their low performance CARB system whenever. On to the Miata cooling system thread.

Hood vents look like crap to me, do people not have problems with water when they have holes in their hood?

 

At speed air is exiting the vents so no water in. My vent is right between the fans and the engine, so nothing to get wet.

I wouldn't put them in a car that lives outside in a rainy climate. Just too much water. They are fine for the occasional rainshowrr but I wouldn't leave them outside in a big rainstorm.

 

I guess the Evo guys do it all the time with their hood. That hole is huge and is right above the turbo.

Well i'm going to do more ducting, taping, weatherstripping. Plus wire the fans together. I've only noticed this on a 95F day which isn't very hot for a lot of you.

 

I have a hard time believing the singular hood vents wouldnt cause a problem for a parked, outdoors only, car. I'll be getting a nice california car cover for that very reason.

 

I think you could make a relatively simple water shield to go over the vents on the off chance of parking the car in heavy rain, though it really belongs in a garage or under something that won't let lots of water into the engine bay.

 

I agree, it is a concern. Something that attaches over them in the event of rain perhaps? I really need a 3D printer...

 

Downflow vs. Crossflow. Emilio and Savington are both selling crossflows now. Why are they better?

I run them open, daily, no issues. Water tends to drip between the radiator and the engine, but not on. It does get on the compressor housing a bit since the turbo is located Artech forward.

Re downflow/crossflow

Probably the same reason most intercoolers are crossflow and not downflow like early FM. All packaging constraints being equal, crossflow on the wider dimension of a rectangular shaped heat exchanger would allow more time for the fluid to exchange heat for a given volumetric flow. It may also allow. for some configurations, a multi-pass operation like the trackspeed setup. If radiators where square, I'd imagine design would be trivial between the two



Could we get any sheet metal guru's to share a template for ducting? Then we could trim/adjust according to intercooler setup? I imagine anything from the radiator forward would be pretty similar with or without condenser.

My WRX vents are placed so water falls between engine and radiator. I don't want water in my spark plug holes and the location is good for pressure differential.

I'm using a crossflow triple pass stock-car racing radiator because I wanted to try it. I'm happy with it but it is all custom.

 

Have you tried running without a shroud? I'd originally planned on building a shroud, but found that a single 16" fan mounted directly to an upgraded radiator (dual core, cross flow, dubl pass) was sufficiently managing coolant temps at speed and stopped in traffic. And this is in what I'd consider significant heat- full sun, high 90s for temp and humidity. That said- the flaps work well enough to be found on all the volvo radiators I've salvaged. Their shrouds have a series of holes in the shroud hard plastic with rubber hinged rubber flaps.

 

Yeah, overheated sitting in line waiting to run after hot lapping. That was the last time I ran without a shroud a few years ago just after the reroute.

There are a couple spots in the engine bay you actually wouldn't want a vent directly over during a storm, so naturally we avoided those areas, and the template we provide means nobody will accidentally put the vents in the wrong place. We get the question about water probably once per week from someone who is guessing that is is an issue (as you are). We have a perfect record of it not being an issue for anybody.

 

Are you sure you don't have other issues, head gasket, pressure leak? Mine cycles between 205 and 195 (fan settings) even in hot weather. With just a single stock fan.
