Now that this section is here, I am going to ask the impossible
#25
Ok, here's the situation...and I am sure I am not the first to ask this.
I bought an existing M45 NA miata. It is well setup and has done very well in the couple of years I have owned it and tracked it. The competition has stepped up their game though, and I am being eaten alive on the larger tracks. The time has come for more power, and probably less weight (but I have a 2300 lbs minimum).
The M45 setup has been dead reliable, but I am also running fairly low boost (6 PSI). I know that I am making substantial less power than others. I know that many here will say sell it and get the Turbo, or a 1.8 with the MP62, but I would like to weigh my options on the M45. I am not looking for huge power. I am figuring that the 170 WHP is a good target.
So what are the thoughts here?
Thanks.

I have 12 psi> so maybe 24 extra HP...
That thing on evil bay is probably more like 30 extra HP...

For what it's worth guys, A cold side supercharger, untuned with stock injectors, big throttle body, and dual feed fuel rail, with BEGI rising rate fuel injector, put over 160 hp to the wheels. Supercharger was putting out 8-10 psi depending on weather/temps ect.
Just got the megasquirt, and slightly bigger injectors. Need to tune it and get it back on the rollers, and we'll see where it goes from there.
So I figure 200hp should be rather easy with a good tune...

Hate to bust your bubble there meaty, but 160 hp on the chart and he lifted around 5000 rpm? Something looks fishy. I spent a lot of time trying to get a M45 to those power levels, eManage Ultimate, No AFM, abbreviated intake tract, BBK, water injection, 460cc injectors, e-85 and I got to around 150 hp at 8.4 psi.(closer to 10 PSI at sea level). Do you have the .drf for that run?

Indeed I do, sir.
I would post the other dyno runs, but unfortunatly they are all wacky and they messed them up somehow.
Picture of the chart right after my dyno run with car still on the dyno:

And the run file is attached.
He asked me if he wanted me to lift off at any point, and I just told the guy doing the dyno "don't let off until you hit the rev. limiter" *shrug*

I suggest you go to m.net and read up on Soflairick's setup....was able to push 185rwhp @10psi before his motor blew...this included porting the SCer, WI, EMS and about everything possible to increase the power (within reason) other than more boost.

You said it was untuned, and looking at the a/f ratios below about 5k i agree. You were way lean down there.

Working on getting that lean fixed with some stock mx-6/626 turbo injectors (I'm an old f2t guy from mx6.com ). That and the megasquirt will fix those problems and should keep me boosting pretty safe for a little while longer.
I believe that was a 3rd gear run.
The ones that got messed up were done in 4th gear. I'm actually quite annoyed that I spent $40 for ONE run, while all the rx-8 guys I was there with got all three of their runs just fine. Go figure.
I've heard we have a new dyno being brought to town by a guy that does spec miata work, so we'll see if we cant get a dyno day going. I know one of our members just got an FMII, and another is pushing a greddy kit.

My 94 is running an original BRP M45 Coldside (installed by Bad Bob), dyno'd at 162 w/ a dual feed rail, AFPR, Bipes, headers, JR cat, and 2 /1/2" exhaust. I picked this car up for cheap (6K) last summer w/ receipts for over 11K in just Mods (+ a mint HT)
I had added 305's and an EMB for a short time, and now it's running 450's w/ MS.
The car was pretty quirky, it would blow through belts every 1-2K miles. the belts were always slipping- sometimes 8 psi sometimes 11psi.. I re-engineered the pulley system ~210 degrees of belt wrap! and now I can maintain 12psi anytime I want with running just 'normal' tension.

IIRC shiv hit ~190hp? w/ a M45 hotside way back when.

12psi, sounds good.... that car has to be silly quick now with the throttle response from a CS..... I'm curious to see how you did the resign too. There are guys like Jay and a few others that did custom belt stuff for the CSs. Look on BRP threads, I'm sure they are still around.... <G>
