I guess we will have to cross that bridge if we come to it.

Did you contact 949 Racing before getting it "fixed"?

Twibs415 08-23-2013 09:42 PM

^of course not. Im more worried about having a balanced setup than having to buy a clutch kit again.

albumleaf 09-21-2013 08:23 PM

Got my 1.6 clutch in. I need to adjust the pedal because the engagement is pretty close to the ground compared to the OEM clutch and the BMW. Very easy to drive, Emilio's comment about the effort is spot-on. Curious about what a proper break-in for this clutch would be though. Turns out my OEM clutch was indeed slipping at 10-11psi, car feels a good bit faster now. Going to turn up the boost in a bit.

How was the balancing checked? Was the whole rotating assembly balanced or are you just checking the pressure plate and flywheel?

How is drivability with the sprung ceramic 1.8 size disc? Lots of chatter and grabby-ness?

I guess compounding is different between manufacturers (maybe break in is the difference), but sometimes pucked clutches are miserable, and some times they're transparent. I can put up with a lot of unpleasentness in a street car, but a chattery/ grabby clutch is not one of them...

Sprung puck is not bad, quiet too. Rigid puck is very abrupt, and also allows the trans internal noise to be fed up the body.. noisy.

We only recommend rigid hubs for race only, trailered cars.

Honestly, I can deal with the transmission harmonic noise, but a chattery/ grabby clutch makes me want to set the car on fire. I wouldn't buy an unsprung disc for a street car, but I have used them before and I don't find them too offensive.

From what I've read here, it sounds like for my mildly nodded mazdaspeed (intake, and exhaust, intercooler), the supermiata organic 1.6 with the lightened flywheel you sell is the way to go.

Never thought using components for the 1.6 would be an "upgrade."

Would love the race, but can think of other uses for the extra $400.

Twibs415 11-10-2013 12:17 AM

The entire rotating assemble was balanced.

Flywheel was balanced alone. then all the fasteners and the pressure plate were bolted together with the flywheel. then the pressure plate gets ground to make the assembly balanced again.

i put my car together today and i have to say this clutch was the biggest pain in my ass. the disk wouldnt slide onto the trans input shaft. ended up pulling the engine back out and filing some of the splines.

finally got it to work. drove it briefly. felt nice. might adjust the pedal a little more. Effort is low but not quite oem but still light compared to some other cars iv driven.

In other news, the website says these things are back ordered. How long until I can molest one for myself?

1.8 kits due here Tuesday.

What's the ETA on the 1.6 organics? This is apparently a Christmas present for this old man.

I've considered the 1.8, but I've also dyno'd at 185whp/155wtq, and don't plan on anything more than 200whp. I've already got a lightened stock 1.6 flywheel.

I'll be incredibly happy when I get rid of my rigid ceramic. He's spot on with his description of noise and gabbiness. Hate it.

Also waiting for a 1.6 organic for a buddies car. We need sway bars, clutch line, and the clutch.

itskrees 12-06-2013 03:47 AM

Add another one to that list of 1.6 clutches. Im sure you're annoyed by my constant inquiries by now, but they always seem to sell out as soon as im ready to make payment.

Hoping to get this motor in before New Years and the clutch is the only thing im waiting on.

curly 12-06-2013 11:02 AM

Imma just going to back order it, instead of waiting and sniping one when they get into stock. Hope this isn't a retarded idea Emilio.

Edit: whoops, looks like that isn't an option on 949's site.

itskrees 12-06-2013 12:46 PM

^^I was gonna say, Id do that in a heartbeat if that was an option.

Oscar 12-06-2013 01:05 PM

Anyone care to trade my 1.8 unsprung ceramic disc for a sprung hub ceramic? I figured my stuff is easier to sell if the clutch isn't a total ---- to drive on the daily.

albumleaf 12-06-2013 01:13 PM

I love my 1.6 organic <3.
