you guys all say that rear mounting the turbo is less efficient and i understand why, however in a few cases i have seen better results from rear mount turbos then from the standard gimmik.
for instance, my employer owns a base model c6 vette, he put all the z06 panels on it so he could fit some 13" wide ccw wheels on it. he did a custom rear mount twin turbo setup, twin gt37rs mounted to the tranny they sat up in the wells that the two factory fuel tanks sat in. they had a stand alone oiling system with a boost reference pressure regulator. the outlets of the turbo faced up and went through 3" holes drilled in the trunk area and went straight into a air to water intercooler. a 4" charge pipe ran down the center console through the fire wall and into the tb. the motor tranny and clutch were all bone stock stock ls2 absolutely untouched. on the 14psi wg spring it made 817whp on 93 octane with a very very slight amount of knock. with a 12 psi spring it made 769 whp and didnt ping at all. i dont think there are any other turbo ls2s making that kind of power at those boost levels with front mount turbos without heads, cams, intake manifold.

thats not to say i agree with a rear mount turbo on a miata i think its too heavy. and its too easy to do a normal setup.
