Oh, I've tried to explain a lot of these points to people recently, and nobody seems to understand. My dad is the worlds worst. If the speed limit is 25 on a main road where EVERYONE else does 40-50, he does 25, or a few under, causing a massive backup for 1/4 mile. He tells me "people should respect the laws" when I start freaking out that he needs to speed up. Yeah, some made up number put in place by local law makers to increase ticketing for speeding is worthy of respect. Another way the the government and law enforcement are so concerned for the people... or their bottom line.

There are legal engineering parameters that limit the local authorities on the speed limit they can set for a given roadway. Trees, guardrails, aprons, shoulders, lane width, etc. all need to be within certain parameters to be a 45 and not a 30 mph zone, etc. The DOT has a bigass book of standards for it. Now that doesn't mean the local government can't artificially make it lower, but they might not be able to make it higher without reengineering the roadway.

Guy is pretty damn good at knocking down that strawman.
I see most of you have missed the point as well. The video has NOTHING to do with speed limits on anything but expressways. He states that clearly in the beginning.

Great video. Makes you really wish speed limits could be about safety instead of revenue.
Find a really narrow, 2 lane, residential road, with blind corners, a 35 speed limit, and there's no cop in sight. Then look at a nice 6 lane, wide road, that's lightly traveled, with divided medians, no cross traffic, no lights, with a 45 speed limit and there's a cop hiding behind every bush.

Oh yeah, common sense to those of us who are aware of the "real world". But it always comes down to revenue....revenue...revenue...revenue. God forbid you do you job and make things safer at the expense of a reduced source of cash flow to the YYZ government...and well, **** safety....gimmie MONEY!
