I'll take the RS-3s off your hands. $20.

Mobius 04-14-2013 12:52 AM

Dyno on Thursday went well. The new fuel pump was the ticket, went from going lean over 5.5k to very rich. We spent most of the hour pulling fuel.

This is where I want my Reverant MS3x+ enhanced to exist, so I can tell it what AFR target I want. Tuning with the Xede is not difficult, but it's a bit tedious and there's some guesswork involved. And it doesn't seem to really like loading new maps on the fly - for consistent results it's power off, power on, upload the new map, burn the map to eeprom, start the car.

I have somehow, in the midst of preparations for the first track day Monday, misplaced the dyno sheet so can't post it. 187whp / 157wtq were the numbers. I didn't mess with timing at all from what I had, pulling more in boost as rpm grows to 4deg from stock over 6k. We didn't pull to fuel cut, probably should have done one just to do it.

Wing is on. I can get the jack into the trunk if necessary, but not the helmet. So for now only the chair goes in the trunk. Trailer is hooked up, lights are tested, only thing left to do is put the numbers on and pack food.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahahahahahaha Martin was deleted.

Imma just gonna drop this here...

At least you're racing though. I'll see you in the AM! Gopro with telemetry to follow...

Mobius 04-15-2013 10:07 PM

Mods: I require an explanation as to why a post was deleted from my thread. I happen to personally know the poster of the post in question. I await your response. This is mt fucking . net. We don't get our panties in a wad over trivial bullshit. You think a post is out of line in one of my threads and that I may find it offensive or insulting,, you give me the courtesy of checking with me before moderating it.

Edit: before moderating it in my name. If a post is out of bounds of the Terms of Service for the site you do what you need to do. That was not the case for the post in question, so gtfo.

Chilicharger665 04-15-2013 10:30 PM

The post said WOOT... and in very long form. That was it. It was spam from a noob with a low post count.

greddygalant 04-15-2013 11:47 PM

A. It was not spam
B. It was a celebratory woot because I was excited that Mobius had his car all together and ready for our trackday that happened today.
C. It was a long woot because I was excited to see that not only was the car running better but that it was also going to have it's beautiful new wing.
D. The moderators here seem to be bored and perhaps might need to go suck a Costco sized bag of dicks.
E. A comment such as D might be grounds for having it deleted/banning me. the celebratory woot in the thread of a friend, I think not.
F. Had a great time driving with Mobius today, had some good battles out on the track and his car look AMAZING with the wing on.
G. that is all.

oregonmon 04-16-2013 12:07 AM

Woooooot! Martin!

Mobius 04-16-2013 01:26 PM

Track day was awesome. Lowered my best time for PIR from a 1.42 to 1.34.12. Spec Miata record is a 1.31.3 so I have a ways to go there.

Peak G was 1.36. Peak sustained G's are in the 1.24 range. I ran both the 205 Rivals on the 8's (morning session, cold) and the RS3's on 9's for the other three sessions. The Rivals made more noise than the RS3's, and I averaged about .2G less on them. But they were run in the coldest session, first track day of the year, and I didn't want to make too much noise with them because we get fingers wagged at us if we appear to be overdriving - the HPDE organizers want 9.5/10ths at most. In raw lap time comparisons the Rivals were about 3 seconds slower. For a smaller tire on a smaller wheel I think they did very well.

The car was extremely stable at all speeds and I could really tell that the rear was planted in the one high speed ess (T10/T11). Super pleased.

curly 04-16-2013 05:35 PM

Alright, one and final warning for everyone.

Yes, there are a few newbs with low posts. I'll keep them in line, but they're all friends of ours in the Portland area. They all have quick miata track cars. They're just used to CR, give them a chance, I pointed them this way to see what all the track rats are doing over here.

And lol@thunderdome.

P.S. Ironically, I got the reported post emails while at the track with all of them.

greddygalant 04-16-2013 09:12 PM

That is ironic, very ironic. Anyways, Mobius, terrific job on the car, had fun battling with you when I was out there in both cars, hopefully next time the galant will be in fighting form and we can have some more high speed battles.

Mobius 04-16-2013 11:48 PM

Yes it was a good time. The Galant is surprisingly fast

tomiboy 04-17-2013 01:05 PM

Are we talking a Mitsubishi Galant?

curly 04-17-2013 06:44 PM

Yup. I'll let Martin (greddygalant) jump in with the full spec sheet, but he's spent entirely too much on that barge of a car. It is indeed fast.

Martin: a little hint: These guys really like a dyno sheet. Post numbers without one and I may give you a warning.

greddygalant 04-18-2013 04:33 PM

haha, barge smarge, my galant weighs only about 150 pounds more than Mobius's NB, I won't clutter this thread with info on it.

Mobius 05-03-2013 12:43 AM

Had a great drive through the hills of NW Portland today.

Then the car died. Immediately before dying, it had lost power. Like, allofit. I pulled over and parked, as I had reached my destination. Then it wouldn't start. It would crank and sputter, but not start. Called for a tow truck.

During the wait I poked around and checked obvious stuff, didn't see anything wrong. Couplings all coupled, wires all attached, none obviously the victim of horrid melting or abrading incidents, etc. After about 45 minutes it started but sounded terrible.

Martin of Galant fame was able to drop by and assist with diag. The truck brought it back to the house and we commenced work. During all of this I got two codes for the MAF from the ecu (po102 and po103; low and high voltage respectively) as well as po300 (random cylinder misfires, would result from bad maf signals) and an odd po480 which is a complaint about cooling fan #1, which is running fine and turning on and off appropriately.

Martin and I are pretty sure that the MAF has actually gone bad. I have extended the MAF connector harness so it would reach where it needs to be with the rotrex install; we stripped all the covering off it it back to where it rejoins the original wrapped harness and it all looks good. The car runs, but poorly, and sounds terrible. Normally at idle my AF gauge fluctuates between 14.1 - 15.5 or so; at the moment it's much less consistent and bounces between say 12ish and 17ish. Plugs all look pretty black, but equally black, and all gapped at .030.

The MAF possibly slowly dying recently would explain several things, like why my tune seems somewhat unstable.

But on the good news front, we did a compression check.
#1 180
#2 180
#3 180
#4 180

That's a 130k mile engine that has been boosted for about 10k miles. And driven flatout.

curly 05-03-2013 03:08 AM

Hope it's not a coolant sensor. That would explain the starting after 45 minutes. It's be a lot cheaper too. I've heard of them failing. Haven't heard of any mafs failing. See if it runs fine in the morning, it's an easy way to prove me wrong.

Mobius 05-03-2013 06:15 PM

Doesn't run fine. Still borken. Swapping MAF's had no effect. My scangauge is reporting coolant temps which appear accurate, so I don't think it's the coolant sensor. Unless there are two. The car starts, sounds sort of like a subaru, runs poorly, and I can floor it and watch the tach slowly climb.

I have only 12in HG vacuum when I used to have 22in HG vacuum. This is a problem ... I have applied suction and was not able to find the leak via ear. I have applied pressure, and used soapy water, and have not seen a leak anywhere on the tb gasket, IM gasket, or miscellaneous hoses.

Since the compression test was good, I am assuming the valves are ok and seating properly. Something mechanical somewhere is causing my vacuum leak. Maybe egr valve?

curly 05-03-2013 08:19 PM

COILS

Mobius 05-04-2013 12:57 AM

NOT COILS.

Next?

rleete 05-04-2013 08:08 PM

Grounds? Any electrical problems means check all the ground wires/straps first.

curly 05-04-2013 08:14 PM

I can't imagine what would happen to a ground on a drive that would cause it to do this. I say injectors next, cause it definitely sounds like it's running on less than 4 cylinders.

Rich, you've got a timing light? With the inductive clamp, you can check for a steady heart beat on all 4 spark plug wires. Ask ms. mobius to check the rhythm if you're unsure.

Next I'd want to check that all the injectors are getting gas. Sounds like your FP is working? And the filter checks out? Then I'd check that the Xede is putting out a signal for both channels. Or do you have sequential ignition? I dunno. Is there a way to data log on the xede?

hornetball 05-04-2013 08:48 PM

Hey Mobius, you mention a new fuel pump in your 4/13 post. Have you checked fuel pressure? Electromechanical devices are known to suffer infant mortality on occasion.

Mobius 05-04-2013 11:34 PM

Every time I have pulled the plugs (4 so far) they have been black. They are getting enough fuel to be rich.

The pump is new, yes. I can hear it spin up. It sounds no different now than when it was brand new. I don't think it's the pump.

Spark: we pulled the leads one by one. Each time we pulled a cylinder, the engine almost died and we could hear the spark jumping the gap from the lead to the plug as we pulled it and re-attached it. So each plug is getting spark.

The Xede appears fine. It can datalog but not AFR. Thinking perhaps the map had somehow simply become completely fubared I re-loaded the last map. It uploaded and burned to eeprom fine. I downloaded it again and it had no changes. I don't *think* it's the Xede.

The car sounds like ... it sounds soft. There's a pfft in it that shouldn't be there. When I gas it half throttle from idle, it bogs and almost dies. AFR goes super rich. If I WOT from idle, it doesn't bog so bad, but revs climb one onethousand 1k two onethousand 2k 3 onethousand 3k etc. It's like there's a banana in the tailpipe or the cylinders had 100psi compression instead of 180.

I still have not pulled the EGR valve. My other duties I have been neglecting are snowballing.

Regarding the pump: I wonder about my FPR. I have seen a couple of reports of NB1 FPR's being overwhelmed by the DW300. I have not found any such reports for NB2 FPRs.

And I didn't get the fuel filter changed. But seems like I would be having lean problems if I had a fueling problem, not rich problems.

hornetball 05-05-2013 05:42 PM

You definitely shouldn't be that rich. Maybe this is your chance to go MS? Curious what you and Curly find on Tues.

Mobius 05-05-2013 08:08 PM

Pulled the valve cover and the plastic bits over the timing belt. Everything looks like it's supposed to. Timing is correct.

Let's keep comments for this particular problem consolidated into the lost all power (allofit) thread please.

Mobius 03-18-2014 02:53 AM

2013 problem resolution - crank bolt apparently was insufficiently torqued. Crank was undamaged but had to replace pulley boss and a couple of other bits.

2014 update: no updates to the car itself. 225/45R15 Toyo RR's replace the 225/45R15 RS3's on my 9's. My initial feedback after one track day is that I really like the RR's. They drive like Rcomp street tires. I must clarify that I have not ever driven true R-comps - the RR's are the stickiest tires I have ever driven. However, my understanding is that race tires are more sensitive to slip angle and more unforgiving when the max grip slip angle (somewhere around 7degrees, if my research is correct) is exceeded. Driving the RR's, they simply felt like more sticky street tires, that made little to no noise until they were approaching their limits. Basically, to me, they feel like stickier, quieter, RS3's. At the end of the first track day I was still adjusting to their higher limits.

Mobius 03-19-2014 07:30 PM

Great track day 3/15. RR's are beautiful. They drive (to me) like better RS3's that don't ever overheat. By the end of the day I was beating my best solo laptime on RS3's with a passenger in the car with me.

Upon de-trackification today, I discovered this. Stuck rear caliper? This was drivers inside left, Hawk DTC-60.

Mobius 06-16-2014 05:32 PM

Upgrades are occuring.

2 Attachment(s)
Upgrade #1: My transmission shifts like a stir spoon in a mash tun. In gear the shifter has enough slack to move sideways/back and forth almost a couple of inches. Granted, this is with a long shifter handle on it, but it is very sloppy. This was made extremely apparent to me when I had the opportunity to drive Turbofans' MSM around the block. He has the same shifter I do (Miata Roadster short shifter with the tall, angled handle) but it shifts NOTHING like my transmission. His shifter barely moves when in gear, and gear changes go snickety-snick.

So I have acquired and installed an 80k miles MSM 6 speed. Initial dry shifts on the jackstands are promising, it feels like it has much less slop than my original transmission. A winter project will be to disassemble my original 6 speed and go through it, replacing synchros and forks.

Upgrade #2: my AC hasn't blown cold air in 3 years. In that time I only tried to use it twice. Therefore - it is gone.

Weight savings: 30.5 lbs. Airflow savings - big.

Got the new mounting solution for the rotrex cooler installed today. A piece of angle aluminum runs across the bottom, using the AC condenser rubber feet in their original holes. This takes all the weight and a small strip of aluminum bolted to the top provides the fore/aft support. Seems super sturdy. Took longer than it should have, but all of my car projects take longer than they should.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...1&d=1402954114

Changed out the rotrex filter and the fluid while I was at it.

Up next: new ducting, then completing the passenger fender well oil cooler.

Edit: thanks to Doppel, greddygalant, and Curly for a bunch of help Thursday/Friday tearing into the car.

turbofan 06-16-2014 06:08 PM

I need a job that gives me more time off but pays me the same. Any ideas? I want to come wrench on cars with you guys but I'm always working :(

Nice work on the progress!

curly 06-16-2014 06:34 PM

Looking good! Can't wait to see the oil cooler finished up and all this buttoned up. Needs more turbo though.

Mobius 08-19-2014 12:24 AM

The laundry list of updates:

1. The original MSM transmission I acquired shifted beautifully into every gear on my test drive until I tried 5th. Didn't like upshifting into 5th, was impossible to downshift into 5th from 6th. So, bummer. Swapped the original transmission back in.

2. Shifter fixage! Ed (turbofan) noticed the play in my transmission didn't seem to be in the transmission. After some shifter teardown and examination it turned out there was a bushing missing from my installation. A quick check of my instructions and an email to MiataRoadster later, and magically USPS delivered me a bushing. Voila! Much better shifter feel! Win. Props to Miata Roadster.

3. AC removal has been win for coolant temps. Today was a 90 degree ambient day, coolant temps never went over 207. Previously they would have been 227. Once I ventilate my hood I should be sub-200 on temps always. Plus, bonus, set a new personal best at PIR in the second session this morning, and finally cracked the SM record.

4. Autocross. This past Sunday was my first opportunity this year to autocross on the Toyo RR's. I haven't been able to since May, and all of the early ones were wet. I also decided to run the wing for the first time for autocross.
All teh wins.
In the two years I have autocrossed with this particular group (Oregon PCA) I have never been close to FTD, wet or dry. I have usually been a good 2 seconds off of either a nationally competitive Boxster on Hoosiers, or a local 2010 Cayman also on Hoosiers. Yesterday, with the Toyo RR's, wing set at maximum attack, and rear sway disconnected, I was FTD. On the second run of the day in the colder morning run group, no less. The RR's never got more than lukewarm to the touch, so never reached operating temperature, but still had more grip than my RS3's or Rivals ever had.

5. MSM transmission #2! It has been acquired and is mine. Since it was local, I was able to verify it shifted properly in all gears before it left the donor vehicle. A change to it shall be made at some point.

6. Spare hoodage From the same MSM, I have acquired the hood, which shall become my ventilated track hood. Or, depending on how things work out and how true that hood is, my current hood will be ventilated and that one will be the nice hood. Whichever. Datatested louvers from ThePass on the way.

No Rotrex updates because it just works. Curly and I did do some guerilla driveway tuning on Saturday to pull fuel since it has been noted on numerous videos I'm too rich, especially on cold mornings. My track-day eyeballing of the AFR gauge on front and back straights seemed to show pretty solid improvements, AFR mostly in the low 11's.

tomiboy 08-19-2014 06:52 AM

I'm not an AXer but congrats on the FTD! Bigger props on beating the SM record!!! Good to hear you've got a good trans...it sucked to have to go through what you did on the first one. I too have heat issues and it's good to hear, if I can't solve them, removing the AC will do it. I have ventilated my hood and it does help. For me probably 5-7 degrees. Mine came off an MSM also (totaled at Road America). PM me your email and I'll show you my hood vents.

Was it on track you saw a 20* improvement by removing the AC heat exchanger or street driving? If track I guess I have to do it.

Mobius 08-19-2014 01:22 PM

Track. Street cooling has never been a problem for me.

tomiboy 08-19-2014 01:32 PM

I guess I gotta do it then. At least it's a free mod!

I was thinking about relocating my Rotrex oil cooler into the side of the bumper using the new TDR cooler, designed for his Rotrex kit, but with my brake ducts in the way this may be the way to go. Thanks Mobius!!

turbofan 08-19-2014 01:35 PM

I should have pulled my A/C yesterday. Dangit. Debated and decided not to, but should have.

Nice updates.

Next time you need me to solve a simple problem for you, don't call me -- I can only get that lucky once and I wasted it on your car :(

Tee hee

I'll bring your radiator back soon. I have it out of my car but I left the fans at KO, will have them back prolly tonight.

Quick question, if you don't mind. I ordered the 28x7x2.5 tacotaco intercooler since I've seen a few guys run them without problem. The ebay listing shows a pic like this...

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1408514064

The intercooler I got has a lot more tube than fin, is yours like this?

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1408514064

It's stamped "JDM" on the top and bottom, which I wasn't expecting.

Did they cheap out in the last few years, because it's still $68 shipped? Half tempted to send it back.

Thanks!

Mobius 08-20-2014 01:26 PM

Umm .... no idea. Mine's on the car at the moment, hard to check. I think I bought a second one as a spare, if I can find it in the garage I'll check.

turbofan 08-20-2014 02:34 PM

well it's certainly not the same as the photo! I think you'd be justified in sending it back. Wow. That'll cool the air alright...

Cool, thanks man! I guess your IATs aren't enough of a problem to consider upgrading the intercooler though, wonder if they just changed manufacturers or something somewhere down the line.

I can't imagine this thing doing much other than look cool, and I didn't even want it for that. Damn ebay :fawk:

Mobius 08-21-2014 01:21 AM

After heatsoak my IAT's are consistently +20ish ambient, so no I haven't worried about it. IAT sensor is just before the elbow into the manifold itself.

Edit: a bonus of the rotrex is the rediculously low contribution to IAT.

$68 is tough for me to argue to quibble about ... I would say just run it, everything will probably be fine. My quick mt.net search didn't yield an intro or build thread for you, so I gots no idea what power goals you have. If you're look for a 300 whp or more build, this is probably not the intercooler for you, there are better resources from mt.net vendors for those power levels.

Imho, there is no way that intercooler you got will cool as well (or at all), compared to the 'original' delta fin that a lot of other people are running. I don't know if you got a knock-off (not that there is a 'real' one) or what, but I ordered one a few months ago and received the 'proper' one and it's working quite nicely on a friend's Exocet.

I haven't yet started a build thread just yet, but I'm shooting for numbers just north of what most would probably run without a intercooler, something like 175-200 from a 1.6 with a baby t3 50 trim. Though I'll probably only run "8psi" churbo wastegate for quite a while.

Maybe I should finally start a build thread instead of just posting everywhere lol Sorry for the derail

I can't imagine that this one will cool much at all either, but it's interesting you got a decent one just a few months ago. I might see what it takes to send this thing back, shipping is probably not cheap. Guess that's part of the gamble sometimes

Updates and new shinies in the world of Mobius

Updates. Things are happening in the garage of Mobius.

Driving Season

The track and autocross season has ended. I briefly entertained thoughts of Season Championship Glory for autocross with the Oregon PCA. Had I won Non-Porsche-RWD yesterday I could have been points leader depending on the finish of others. However, those dreams were dashed when real autocrossers showed up, with their damn Hoosiers. Hoosiers! NEMESIS! One day you will be mine ... precious ... Seriously, the next full autocross season I get (which may be 2016, or 2017, depending) A6's on a set of 9's are going on my car. If I use my track slicks for autocross I'll have to buy another set of tires midway through the season anyway, so if I'm already buying two sets of tires, fuck it. Goin' sticky.

Results have not been posted but I believe I was third, probably putting me third for season. I'll take it having only made 5 of 9 events. I also learned something yesterday - DO NOT agree to instruct three (3!) novices in the same run group as you. Holy fuck. Getting strapped in and being late to the start line is Epic Fail for the mental zen-fest you need to properly focus and attack an autocross course. Never again. I will instruct all they want in the run groups, but in my run group, it's one or none.

I learned this year that Toyo RR's are much stickier for autocross than either RS3's or Rivals. Might seem like a no-brainer, but it's nice to have validation.

Projects

Due to this and that, I took last winter completely off from car projects. That shall not be the case this winter. The things that are happening this winter in the garage of Mobius - new shinies!
  • Reverant MS3! order placed!
  • CNC head! order placed! with subs for 8k RPM goodness!
  • V8 Roadsters lower control arms! Order placed! For stronger, and for more cambers.
  • Installation of my reroute (purchased 12/09, lol)
  • Singular Motorsports hood louvers! I have a spare hood for this.
  • Front Splitter! 3/8" birch plywood as ordained by the gods

I've been running 2.5 camber up front, and can't get any more without lowering the car more, and it's as low as I want to take it. So LCA's it is.

Optional Projects

Depending on stuff, and whether I get any more budget, I want to do a squaretop manifold with a BOV welded to it. We'll see.

curly 10-06-2014 10:40 PM

OOooh this is exciting. Mainly the MS3. Before/after dyno tests please?

turbofan 10-06-2014 10:49 PM

Very cool. Looking forward to this.

EO2K 10-07-2014 12:45 AM

Holy hell, you are not screwing around, are you?

Mobius 10-07-2014 01:14 AM

Budget is now officially borken :)

greddygalant 10-07-2014 02:09 AM

very cool, glad to see you upgrading the car, this will be a great winter of upgrades for the PDX Miata crew.

vintagerust 10-07-2014 02:14 AM

That's quite the list!
Much want.

Chilicharger665 10-07-2014 10:18 AM

I have a squaretop for sale, if you don't have one already.

Mobius 10-07-2014 11:14 AM

Ooh. I am interested but may not have funds until Christmas. I literally emptied the piggy bank and made bacon from the shattered remnants.

Dyno today was 193whp / 156 wtq. Right at what I expected. He ran it to about 6900; so at fuel cut it should be right at 200.

LC-1 in the car always read low 11's on track. The O2 sensor has died, new one isn't here yet, so I didn't bother to record today with the gopro. Tailpipe sniffer is always leaner, though.

Once the MS3 goes in I'll bother to actually tune it beyond "it runs and don't blow up."

Bears an uncanny resemblance to my 1.6 turbo numbers after I opened up the exhaust:

Curious about the wavy boost line. Is that normal?
