It's the torx screws that cover the front of the VVT 'cover' that goes in front of the cam. I think it's an M5 x 0.8 x 10mm?

why not just order from dealer since it's highly unlikely that a hardware store will have ones that fit?

 

Yeah, man, don't cheap out on those fasteners. Aside from the bolt diameter and thread pitch, you've also got to worry about the shank length, countersink geometry, hardness, coating, tolerances.. it's literally a $7 investment for a set of 3, and a very annoying job to have to do over, especially if the failure is catastrophic.

This one would do in a pinch, and somewhat local to you; Metric machine screws, Star drive flat head, Stainless steel 18-8 (A-2), 5mm x 0.8mm x 10mm OAL

 

Dealer was going to have to order and I just wanted to test and see if it would fix the leak there. Don't worry, I was just trying to troubleshoot.

Better off having the car sit a few extra days instead of having to do it twice and have to get a new VCG as well though. Might as well swap out the blind cover gasket as well.

Working on this car has turned me into a hoarder pre-empting my screw ups. I ordered 6 of those screws because I didn't want to wait for more to get here in case I stripped one a little.

But in any event, the leaks were:

-VCG
-VVT blind cover (above issue)
-VVT banjo bolt on back of head (missing a copper washer)

Noises were:

-Idler pulley
-Trigger wheel eating through plastic on timing cover (trimmed it)
-VVT blind cover touching VC somehow.
-Downpipe clanging around on the steering rack.

Crossing my fingers i'll have time to get this sorted over the weekend so I can cut the wire holding the wastegate open.

I did the NB1 -> NB2 facelift with the lights and front bumper. I'm still finagling the wiring for the headlights and fogs. My high beams weren't working at first and now my low beams cut out, so I'm going to have to figure out where I'm missing a ground or if a relay was damaged by coolant spraying around in my engine bay from the reroute hose deciding to try to make a run for it.

 

Working in my office/used parts storehouse and measured one. Just happened to know where it was, which is not normal for me... Updated the post to leave a usable alternative as well.

 

Somehow??? Come clean...

 

How is it even possible to spend so much time considering, re-considering, and exploring every theoretical approach to this project online, and then botch execution so badly? I'm genuinely curious.

On a serious note: newb gonna newb. I've read enough build threads for folks on here that are doing some solid **** and seen some of the eff ups that happen there as well. And I suck at wiring because it's something I rarely ever do. I found a really good guide for the headlights and was really confused for a while till I realized that I ordered the wrong kind of relay since I didn't realize there was a difference (always open vs always closed). It took me 4 times to do the TB on my NB1 motor correctly because I did stupid **** like put the trigger plate on backwards, have things off by a tooth, mess up a gasket install which led to coolant everywhere, blah blah blah.

Most of the people on here don't document the little ish that goes wrong because they know people are going to make fun of them. All I'd ever wrenched on before this was bicycles and a motorcycle, so I figured it'd be a steepish learning curve. I mean... it's not biochemistry steep, but **** happens. I just prefer laughing about the dumb ish that happens from time to time, which is probably why you have the perception of me that you do.

But SOTH's car runs, almost all the time. In fact, it's running more than most cars on here, and spends the least amount of time on jack stands.

 

Oh yeah. He definitely knows his ****. He's been messing with this stuff for long enough. I figure that anyone that's comfortable working with rotaries can do miata ish drunk and blindfolded.

 

I'm trying to visualize how the blind cover could possibly contact the vcg. The only thing I can think of is if you didn't clock the actuator (the VVT cam sprocket) correctly so that the locating pin on the nose of the cam wasn't seated correctly, then the actuator and thus blind cover would sit too far forward. But I'm struggling to believe you could do this and not notice, and that the motor would even start.
