Might also want to consider a torque wrench as part of the "mandatory track day tool bag." :)

That's what calibrated elbows are for.

Troy and I dropped off our motors at United Speed World yesterday. Phil, the machinist, is super cool. He told us he was backed up and the turn around will probably be around 3 weeks. There was some question on how large of a bore would be needed on my block due to a small gouge caused by the valve exploding and hitting the cylinder wall. Phil started boring it yesterday so that he could give me a quick answer on whether I would need to exchange my pistons for larger ones. Good news is that I won't need new pistons.

Sounds like progress! A good machinist/machine shop with an honest grasp on its lead times and does quality work is worth it's weight in gold. I hope all goes well!

What do you mean? You don't have moss growing on your back?:dunno:

That's hair, I'm all man.

This thread needs more updates. How did the block end up coming out?

There will be updates when there is something to update. Block and head are still with the mechanist. It hasn't been 3 weeks yet but he has called me with a few quick questions so I know he is working on it.

Ryan_G 06-02-2014 12:01 PM

The machine shop completed all of my engine work and Troy picked up both engines on Friday. Unfortunately, I have been flying to Texas for work every week for the past 3 weeks and will be doing so for the next 2 or 3 weeks so I was not able to see the engine myself. Troy and I will be assembling my engine one weekend here in the not so distant future. Then I will just be waiting for my hot side parts from Abe so that I can take a week off of work and get this swap done and running. I am very excite!

sixshooter 06-02-2014 01:33 PM

I'll see you at Sebring, if not sooner.

Troy said your block came out fine, even though it was rough originally.

EO2K 06-02-2014 02:56 PM

What PTW did you end up spec'ing for the Soopertech 4032 pistons? I'm still trying to make a decision.

Also, when does the manifold show up? I'm trying to figure out if yours will be running before mine ;)

Ryan_G 06-02-2014 04:02 PM

PTW was 0.0026-0.0028 which is where Sixshooter's machinist set his tolerances so I went with that.

I have no eta on the mani because there was an issue with BW sending the exhaust and compressor housings for the 7163 separately. Bryan just got the tracking number for the compressor housing from BW last week and will be forwarding it to Abe as he needed both pieces due to very tight clearances with my chosen manifold design.

EO2K 06-02-2014 05:00 PM

Killer, thank you good sir. I regret I have only one prop to give.

So much wanting of the v-bands  I've been in contact with FullRace and they have no ETA from BW on the v-band inlet IWG turbine housing for my B1. Nice to see they did it right with the 7163, or at least "right enough." Sorry you got caught up by the supply chain.

Not a bad day.

I started dragging my stuff out this morning to see what I need to get my bucket on the road. If only I had a good assistant.

I love seeing a motor come together. Props, and in for the braaaaaaaaaaaap noises coming soon.

Winning! Good progress is good!

I have a feeling I should buy one of those ring file tools.

Nice work on the block!

Unfortunately, we did not get nearly as much done on Sunday as we were hoping to but progress was still made. We started cleaning parts to finish assembling the bottom end. I got a few pictures. The oil pan was absolutely disgusting.

After much effort, lots of degreaser, and some scotch brite it was much cleaner.

I was going to buy a new water pump for the build but Troy started inspecting the one from the old engine and realized that it looked almost completely brand new once he cleaned off the dirt. The bearing was very tight and the impeller looked completely untouched. The motor was suppose to have about 60k on it so I am assuming the timing belt and water pump had just been changed or something. I am going to reuse this pump.

We were putting the main bearing support plate back on and realized the ARP main studs were making contact with it. I did a little research and realized that this happens for some and not for others. Awesome. I was not about grinding the studs down so we decided to just drill/cut the support plate just enough to allow the studs to clear.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1405706711

We also cleaned up the pickup tube and made sure that it was clear and that the screen was unobstructed. I did not get any pictures of it though. I moved the engine from Troy's place to my apartment for now where it is in a dry, climate controlled space, protected by a garbage bag and well lubed. We will be getting to the head assembly at some point in the near future. In the mean time I need to keep cleaning some of the hardware and miscellaneous parts as well as completing my LS2 truck coil setup and wiring in the VVT controller.

My clutch master cylinder also decided that it wanted to take a shit last week so I ordered this kit from 949: Miata MX5 clutch HOK

Ohhhhhh man!

Is ARTech doing the manifold? I sometimes wish I had gone this route. AC is already out so I'm only a hop-skip-jump away from killing off my PS.
