I also don't understand the need to g oto the built in O2 controller. You sell your wideband for $100, then still need to go buy a new O2 sensor for $50 anyways. So does not seem like that big of an issue.
1. Failsafes - almost all the "normal" sensors have both failsafe (e.g. assume this value if sensor stopped working) and min/max safe ranges (e.g. if it goes out of range, go into limp mode)
So that's for
- air temp
- coolant temp
- oil temp
- air pressure
- fuel pressure
- oil pressure
- o2 sensor

AFAIK the best MS can do is trigger an output under certain conditions - which can be used for a MIL or if you somehow wired it back to MS I guess you could switch to a "limp mode" map.

2. Having internal O2 controller would also keep the installation neater. I like that. I agree that the price difference is negligible, but it is there.

3. The turbo speed sensor needs a conversion "box" that is specific to the EFR sensor and outputs 0-5V. AFAIK you can't wire the sensor directly into the MS because it exceeds 65536 rpm aka max value for 16-bit integer.

4. I didn't mention this earlier, but the Megasquirt's +5V is not regulated or in any way limited. I found that out when my fuel pressure sensor went bad and started drawing close to 1.0A. This draw caused Megasquirt to somehow read 12V incorrectly. The whole car barely ran and I incorrectly diagnosed it. Replaced the fuel pressure pump, when there was probably nothing wrong with it.

I'm not trying to say that Infinity is the best ECU since the invention of internal combustion engine, but I do think its better than Megasquirt. Obviously, the better-ness is subject to diminishing returns.

We finally convinced ken and James to add some failsafe modes in ms. The new 1.5 alpha 5 has oil pressure shutoff and limp options. Hopefully it will expand to more.

But the infinity is an aem product so you know it sounds way way better on paper than it works in real life. Fool me once aem, never again. Heck I let aem fool me twice, with the EMS4 that would have been a nice ecu in 1998 and the leaky fuel pressure regulator.

I hear you. I'm not really pumped about being sucked into the AEM franchise. Their documentation is full of typos and I imagine that all my fetishes the weird things I want to do will be unanswered by their support.

btw Enginelab is the original manufacturer of the Infinity series - see https://enginelab.net/product/el129-ecu/
Maybe I can just flash the Enginelab firmware onto AEM ecu.... but probably not.

Anyways, I jumped on this deal - https://conceptzperformance.com/aem-...0z_p_14795.php
AEM #30-7110 for $1645, which is an application-specific AEM Infinity 708 but _should_ be usable on any engine. The price is a lot more than I wanted to pay but a lot less than it normally sells for. So I did the most american thing - spent more to get a deal!

Worst case scenario, it doesn't work out and I sell it for what I bought it for.
Best case scenario, I flash EngineLabs software on it and have myself a very expensive toy to play nice ecu

The series 2 was the same way with a different oem and that firm ware did work. Iirc the EMS4 was also made by engine lab and I tried that firmware and tuning software on mine and fail.

Interesting, I looked for the "original" EMS4 but only found this thing by Enginelab

Also this is relevant for anyone who wants to take an Infinity and put Enginelab software on it - gemellocattivo.com ? View forum - Programming

And this thread in particular - http://forum.gemellocattivo.com/view...php?f=13&t=145

When you will be finally done with AEM's firmware that's full of bugs and limitations (and you actually discover the undocumented limitations), contact me for a PnP Extreme MS3.

I sure hope they improved it from all the previous versions.

I made a new thread because I think it will be useful to everyone. I will be documenting my experience thoroughly.

Not going to happen, but I'd love to hear the feature list of your Extreme MS3

Out of curiosity, any reason you did not go with another EMS like Haltech elite? I know the AEM Infinity is supposedly worlds better than the EMS4.

I didn't consider the Elite. It is probably loads better than Infinity out of the box. Infinity is a lot more powerful after you spend a ton of time on it. The hardware is very robust, but you have to bypass AEM tools to access it.

If I wanted an easier solution with faster setup, I'd probably not chose Infinity.
