We have the highest levels of benefits for not working since WWII also. Coincidence? You probably think so.

The IMF? You think an international organization cares what's best for Americans? You probably think so.

Hopefully you're being sarcastic...

Too cold for the bruthas to be outside. They'll make it up in the next week.

Nah. Nobody's been outside to find the bodies. They are there.

It is true, inclement (mostly cold) weather usually does result in lower homicide numbers. It really is too cold to be out killing one another.

Today, I finished reading The Giver for the first time. Long live Capitalism. Time to read Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son.

Love that liberty, but lost me at Ayn Rand. Tried to be a philosopher, novelist, and a political thinker -- she sucked at 2 out of 3.

That Einstein was a one-hit wonder too.

Which do you think she sucked at?

I enjoy her novels. I think Atlas Shrugged and Fountainhead are two of my favorite books I've ever read. I have yet to read Anthem and We the People. I have read most of her non-fiction stuff like Capitalism: the unknown ideal and The virtue of Selfishness.

And while I don't always agree with her, she's was an incredible philosopher considering she "invented" objectivism.

I think she sucked as a political thinker. The problem with most true libertarians is they are very polarizing and there's no way you'll ever be able to convince the public that your ideas are sound. They'd rather believe that if they lived in chains and fed bread and water regularly they'd be more free than actually being free and having to fend for themselves.

But I have yet to read anyone else's writings/works that I have agreed more with than hers. Otherwise I yield to mostly economists like sowell and friedman, but they don't explore much outside their field of work.

I consider Rand my Marx/Mao.

But the whole point was that my wife urged me to read the Giver, I never did in school as she did as a kid (actually we may have been assigned it, but I never read anything in school anyways) and I was overcome with hate of socialism at the moment.

I grew up with a very liberal/progressive/modern (whatever you wanna call it) family, was indoctrinated in school, and didn't really start opening my eyes until the end of college. I had considered myself a democrat because I "wanted to help people". But I had no idea what I meant by that or what it actually meant to be a democrat. I was just pretty much learned that democrats care about the poor and help people and republicans are evil.

I pretty much had an epiphany in school. I was in some political class I can't remember, but I'm pretty sure the teacher was trying push his liberal agenda on us, and I was like this is bullshit, this can't be right, and then in an ethics in journalism class, they were trying to push Kant's means to an ends on us as gospel. Then, after voting for Kerry in the general election, I was like: wait a second, I just voted for the same person that all the worthless hippies and helpless ******** voted for...Then it all just clicked one day--I've been playing catch up ever since.

"If we are lending money that ostensibly we don't have to kids who have no hope of making it back in order to train them for jobs that clearly don't exist, I might suggest that we've gone around the bend a little bit," says TV personality Mike Rowe, best known as the longtime host of Discovery Channel's Dirty Jobs, in this ReasonTV interview excerpt. "I get a little curious about it when it gets to a trillion dollars."
