And in other news, A proposal for a solar farm has been rejected by the town council in Woodland, North Carolina following public concerns.

"A retired science teacher, Jane Mann, expressed concerns that plants in the vicinity of the panels would not photosynthesize which would prevent the plants from growing."

I can only imagine how her science classes were...

"He said the solar farms would suck up all the energy from the sun and businesses would not come to Woodland."

Wut?

It's disheartening that this follow up sentence was necessary.

"Niemann said the only sunlight the panels use to generate power is that which hits them directly.

“The panels don’t draw additional sunlight,” Niemann noted.

Kind of fascinating to watch the dots and to watch how little some of the %'s don't change much.

At first glance I didn't pay too much attention to the recently announced FAA "drone" rules. But, after reading various articles it has all the makings of another cluster...

There's a few members here that fly drones so it should be of interest.

The actual FAA document: http://www.faa.gov/news/updates/media/20151213_IFR.pdf

Since they refer to 'unmanned aircraft' and not specifically 'drones' does this now mean all hobbyist model aircraft over 1lb require a registration?

Irrespective of the obvious "it ain't in the constitution you have a right to fly a drone" this is a fairly well written argument comparing the right to own a gun without a registration.

I'll Register My Drone When You Have to Register Your Gun | Motherboard

"The FAA appears to have tried to make this process as easy as possible—it says registration will take no more than five minutes." Sure....

I Read the FAA's 211 Page Drone Registration Regulation So You Don't Have to | Motherboard

I always thought the FAA had regulations about flying model aircraft (search mode on). Well, golly gee, they do and on the FAA web site at that; https://www.faa.gov/uas/model_aircraft/

And only costs $5 a year...every three years... with no guarantee yet that its immune from obnoxious reporters with a FOIA form... with a $27.5k threat (and criminal fines of up to $250,000 and/or up to three years of prison time) hanging over your head otherwise.

From my reading of things they are applying it to ALL flying RC craft. The AMA is seething.

And its .55lbs upto 55lbs, above that requires special aircraft work with FAA for certification/registration.

Lulz.

Meanwhile, this requires the same registration and licensing to operate as a new riding lawn mower does, meaning none.

Sure about that? It would have a set of rules and registrations to follow from what little I know. You might be able to take off/land anywhere (outside of airport areas just like drone/rc rules), but still have rules to follow.

I think the main takeaway is it doesn't cost anything, nor require any registration to use it. And, the possibility of abuse is every bit as real as someone flying a drone.

ultralight license requirements

Yes, there are rules that govern the operation of them.

There are airspace restrictions for everything.

It does not require licensing, registration (no N-number like larger aircraft), instruction, certification, taxes, or fees.

Controlled airspace around airports is a series of rings with altitude parameters. The restricted area looks like an upside down wedding cake with the smallest diameter section from ground level to a certain altitude. Then a larger diameter section from there to the next altitude step, and so on.

Note the two rings around Daytona Beach airport. The inner is marked as being controlled from surface to 40k ft. The outer is controlled airspace from 12k to 40k ft. Outside of that is mostly uncontrolled.
