Interesting article in WaPo yesterday. It has a pro-Sanders tone, but exposes what I find to be dangerous shifts in the thought process of the public. Those on the extreme right and the extreme left of the electorate have been single-issue voters who make decisions based on emotion for decades. That mentality seems to be creeping towards the center at an alarming rate.

Full article: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...26b2d177d6040/

A few excerpts:

“I used to think you have to be pragmatic. I just don’t believe that anymore. A lot of it is because of Trump,” said Brigid McNamee, 58, a librarian at a public school in Concord who voted for Clinton over Sanders in the 2016 primary.

You don't believe it's important to be pragmatic?! Facts matter.

“I am so disgusted and outraged. I’m just disgusted by all the lies and corruption. It’s mind-blowing every day what that man and his administration are doing.”

I agree that the President is a buffoon, but aside from that, what are he and his administration doing that is "mind-blowing?" Nationalizing private businesses? Seizing property without due process? Criminalizing thought and speech?

Oh, wait... Those are the things that the Democratic' party advocates.

“I’m a more moderate person, but I feel compelled to support a revolution now because of him,” she said. “It’s got to be a revolution. That’s the only way.”

The only way to... what? Get bad orange man out of office? No, you can do that with a pen. Throw out the constitution and overturn the foundations of the United States? No, you just need to keep voting for folks like Bernie.

"Kimberly Pudlo-Schirmer voted for Clinton in the 2016 primary because she wanted to break the ultimate glass ceiling and elect a woman as president."

Wow, how liberal of you! Basing important decisions on people's gender, rather than their viewpoints and policies!

“I’m one of the ‘hindsight is 20/20’ people,” she said. “I’m definitely going to vote for Bernie. I do like them all, but the only one I see who really understands the middle class is Sanders.”

Bernie "understands" the middle class in much the same way that a cat "understands" the red dot.

"In his speeches yesterday, he promised to wage total war against a dizzying array of powerful interest groups, from big banks to private prisons and large tech companies. Sanders said he’ll go after insurance companies to create universal care, the pharmaceutical lobby to lower drug prices, defense contractors to unravel the military-industrial complex, oil companies to combat climate change and big agribusinesses like Monsanto"

Huh? People who work for big banks, large tech companies, the pharmaceutical industry, the healthcare industry, defense contractors, oil companies, and large agricultural firms ARE a pretty sizable chunk of the "middle class" that Bernie "understands." How is aggressively attacking these firms going to make life better for the millions of Americans who earn their paychecks from them?

Joe, I get the feeling that you are getting a bit confused between "facts" and "beliefs" and "attitudes".

It is my personal "belief" that "facts" should usually be limited to things that can he accurately measured or tested with reliably repeatable results.
It is also my "belief" that "facts" are not normally compatible with politics.

Simply put, politics seems to be based upon "beliefs" and "attitudes" with no regard to actual "facts".

Personally I feel that Al Swearengen (odd spelling) from the HBO series Deadwood had it right when he commented that he would never presume to know what goes on inside the head of a woman.
Noting that the person you quoted is a woman says to me that you are losing it by even trying to justify anything she says with reason and facts.
Am I sexist? Maybe.........but it comes from 60 years of living with various women and still being surprised by some of the things they think and say and do.

As an alternative you could also go with Jack Nicholson in the movie (As Good As It Gets) where he was asked how he can do such a good job of writing what goes on in a woman's head and heart.
Paraphrasing his reply, "I take what a man would think and then remove reason and accountability".

Good try though.

good take:

THE REAL SCANDAL AT OUR UNIVERSITIES
Editorial by Kevin Ryan

Since word broke yesterday that 50 people had been charged in a college admissions bribery scandal, the media and politicians have been racing to shape a narrative around it.

‘It’s proof that the wealthy rig the system!’ says the left. ‘It’s proof that liberal Hollywood stars are elitist hypocrites!’ says the right.

I think both sides are missing the bigger story. Yes, wealthy elites, including those in Hollywood, often find ways to game the system. But this particular incident isn’t an example of a privilege of wealth. These people didn’t take advantage of some legal benefit or loophole that’s unfairly available to the rich.

They broke the law.

If you’re willing to break the law, there are lots of ways to manipulate the system that don’t require having millions of dollars (lying about your race, anyone?).

Instead, all this talk of manipulating your way into elite universities misses the real story, in my opinion:

How the heck can someone who needs to cheat on their SAT and bribe a coach to gain admission on a phony athletic scholarship, then manage to get a degree at a supposedly elite academic institution?

It’d be like a j.v. baseball player bribing his way into the Boston Red Sox Spring tryouts… and then managing to make the team.

What does that say about the quality of these institutions?

Famed Harvard Law School professor Alan Dershowitz wondered aloud on cable news yesterday whether such a scheme would even be possible in his day, when study at the top institutions was much more rigorous. Unqualified individuals who nonetheless managed to gain entry would quickly fail out, Dershowitz said. If that was still the case today, paying a large bribe to help an unqualified student gain entry would make no financial sense.

But clearly that’s no longer the case. It’s getting easier and easier to get good grades at our nation’s institutions of higher learning. In 1960, just 15% of all grades given in college were ‘A’s. More people got ‘D’s and ‘F’s than ‘A’s. Today, 45% of all grades are ‘A’s, nearly 8 times more than all ‘D’s and ‘F’s combined. In some schools, grades aren’t even given out anymore!

And this despite the fact that university students spend far less of their time on actual academic work than ever before. On average, students in a typical semester spend only between 12 and 14 hours per week studying, approximately 50% less time than full-time college students did a few decades ago. Including the hours spent in classes and labs, students spend less than 16% of their time each week on academic pursuits.

Is it any wonder one study found that 36% of students show no significant increase in learning abilities after four years in college?

And yet demand for a degree is as high as ever. Universities are awash in money from 17 million enrollees, fueled by ever-increasing subsidized loans and grants that allow the schools to keep raising tuition. With so much money at stake, colleges have little incentive to fail out students who probably shouldn’t even be there.

Perhaps all this explains how some students manage to attain a degree in economics from an elite institution like Boston University, yet just a few years later show no apparent understanding of economics? Just sayin’.
gotta love the AOC dig.

I did a quick internet search but could not come up with that specific opinion piece that you cut and pasted.
Could you provide a link to the article?

On the specific subject of "higher education" it is my opinion that due to standardized testing and dumbing down of curriculum that has been steadily integrated into the system, the current level of general education has steadily declined over the last couple of generations.
For my entire lifetime there have always been stories of useless and gravy college degrees (masters degree in basket weaving) but it seems like that mind set has transitioned into the bulk of education.
No child left behind, no flunking or admission of failure, participation awards, athletic ability at the expense of academics, etc., etc.

The horrible nightmare that I used to have as a child where I was stuck in the retard class has become reality for most of the current school age kids.

I don't know who wrote that article or the validity of its data. But he asks the question of how can someone who had to cheat and bribe their way into an elite institution get a degree from one. Well wouldn't they just keep cheating and bribing their way to said degree?

But I did like the jab at AOC.

Yes true, but he's bringing up an interesting correlation -- his data doesn't support the premise, but it could suggest these schools aren't all that great, yet the demand for higher education is at it's highest.

Impeach Obama:

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/ex-...AhVspYZjJF3P6E

Former FBI lawyer Lisa Page admitted under questioning from Texas Republican Rep. John Ratcliffe last summer that "the FBI was ordered by the Obama DOJ not to consider charging Hillary Clinton for gross negligence in the handling of classified information," the congressman alleged in a social media post late Tuesday, citing a newly unearthed transcript of Page's closed-door testimony.
It almost seems the more liberals investigate their made up Russia story, more evidence of their wrong-doings come to light.

Gov. Gavin Newsom to halt death penalty despite voter efforts to hasten executions

Gov. Gavin Newsom will sign an executive order Wednesday placing a moratorium on the death penalty for all 737 inmates on California’s death row, ensuring that no executions will take place while he is governor, an administration source has confirmed.
...

In November 2016, Californians passed a measure to speed up executions, the last of which occurred 13 years ago. Most of that measure, Proposition 66, was upheld by the state Supreme Court and a judge was reviewing California’s lethal injection protocol, which Newsom withdrew Wednesday.

As lieutenant governor, Newsom backed a competing ballot measure in 2016 to repeal the death penalty, which voters rejected.

Fox News host Tucker Carlson on Monday rejected what he called a culture of outrage from both Democrats and Republicans amid the fallout from recently resurfaced offensive comments he made about women and minorities years ago.

Carlson delivered a roughly seven-minute opening monologue on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” peppered with graphics that read “The Mob,” “Crackdown on Dissent” and “Liberal Hypocrisy.” While he did not reference any of his specific controversial comments, he doubled down on his initial refusal to apologize for them.

“We’ve always apologized when we’re wrong, and we’ll continue to do that,” he added. “That’s what decent people do. They apologize. But we will never bow to the mob, ever, no matter what.”

Let’s get some things straight about the budget: spending more money* doesn’t make you morally superior. More dollars for unsustainable programs doesn’t mean you have a bigger heart.

My generation will suffer if we don’t start making responsible reforms to our spending.

{Congress} passed bills that would impose fines on those who insult state officials, the flag and the constitution, or spread fake news online. Repeat offenders could be jailed. The bills need the president’s signature to become law. Human-rights groups say that the vaguely worded laws open the door to direct censorship.
