A better education system would probably help with the Poverty, STDs, Child abuse, and Diabetes. It may even help get rid of that pesky religious nonsense as well.

Typically, when one uses the word "better" in the context of education, there is an implication that this means "better funded."
Globally, the US is #2 (behind Norway) in education spending per student at the elementary and secondary level:
And yet the US is somewhere in the 20s or 30s in terms of student academic performance (Google it yourself, sample several different sources, so that you don't feel that I'm cherry-picking data) as compared to all other countries.
I don't think that "a lack of throwing money at the problem" is something which can be cited in this disparity.
And I also don't think that "tax more, spend more" is likely to yield positive results.
One possible explanation for this disparity is that there has been a trend within the US, over the past half-century or so, to embrace and support cultures which place a low (or even negative*) value on traditional educational attainment.
* = Examples would be: claiming that math, science, and literature are constructs of the white oppressor, claiming that "the man" will always hold you down no matter how educated you are, being raised in a home with parents who believe in homeopathy and indoctrinate their children to believe that science is a fiction created by murky, evil, government/corporate conpiracies to enslave them, etc.
