How R you keeping the heat out of cabin?
 

Man!!! I can feel the turbo's heat radiating into the cabin !

I have a home made sheet metal heat shield over the TD04 turbo but it is sort of open on the side facing the firewall.
The DP is not covered or shielded in any way but I do have some of that shinny Mylar padded material under the carpet.

What else are you guys using that works fairly well ?

I was thinking of header tape around the DP (?)

Any ideas ?

I was just looking at my heat shield. It is mostly open in the back in order to avoid the heater hoses etc.
I'm going to have to start from scratch using your approach if I try to make another one.
My DP comes down in a sharp turn from the turbo close to that metal shelf thing inside the Miata engine bay.

When i remake it i'll make it out of thicker metal. The one i have now works alright and its fine but thicker metal would look better and be easier to work with since it would hold shape vs relying on the crease joints.

I don't have a metal heat shield, but I do have everything surrounded by some industrial boiler insulation. A few layers of it held on with some of the reflective "heat tape" stuff keeps everything nice and cool.

I figured if it's good enough for one of our boilers running at 1500° it's good enough for my engine bay.

What's boiler insulation and where do you buy it ?

Also, I saw a greedy heat shield like the ones Bell Engineering used to sell and they had added some type of fiberglass mat to the under side ..

All my heart comes from trans tunnel...

Yeah I have that too but not as much cause of the insulating stuff .

Specifically the stuff that goes between the membrane wall and the casing.

Don't remember the name off the top of my head, but tomorrow I'll grab some and get the information. It's awesome stuff. Thin enough to be useful, and has really good insulating properties.

Maybe its just me but i dont think insulation is needed there. The fans push all the air and it hits the firewall. Having a simple heat shield acts as a guide for the air so instead of guiding it to the turbo then towards the fire wall you're guiding it through the turbo only.

Have you checked your inner and outer shifter boots? They are a major source of heat in the cabin if they are torn.

My shifter boots could be damaged but I just don't feel the heat from there. It hits me in the face like from the gage cluster.:bang:

If you feel it in ur face is ur hood/firewall insulation ripped or something? You sure its not flowing through the vent and to your face?

Hey guys, what is the size comparison between the TD04 and other turbos like the T3 T4 etc ?
I find relatively cheap turbo blankets on line but they seem to cost more when they are listed for the TD04 :ugh:

Also, Found a square hole in my firewall where the rubber plug popped off. I had used it to run my wideband wiring. Some of the heat is coming from there.

The vents also blow a tiny amount of air when they are off.

I would think any T2 turbo blanket would work.

I use wind. I made my Miata a convertable, then put top down and now comes the crazy part....I drive it and wind goes into the cabin.

On a moar srs thought, you can insulate your floor under the carpet. Most people don't like turbo blankets.

Yes, I use wind too but this is Florida and the AC is NG so the heat from the turbo makes the car less enjoyable :td:

My floor is already insulated - two layers of loews shinny stuff.

I added pics of how my shit looks like now. You can see the open back heat shield.
Seems like another heat shield behind this one and some header insulating tape on the down pipe will help.

Keep in mind most turbo blankets will not cover the down pipe so you'll need to make a good heat shield regardless. I say start with the heat shield and then add a turbo blanket (which will probably crumble into nothing by the end of the year)
