Keep in mind most turbo blankets will not cover the down pipe so you'll need to make a good heat shield regardless. I say start with the heat shield and then add a turbo blanket (which will probably crumble into nothing by the end of the year)

crumble into nothing by the end of the year ???!!!!

Maybe i misspelled something. Yes it will turn hard, bridle and start to chip away piece by piece. Back when i was searching for reviews most people say they last about a year before they become useless.

Check Faefae's abortion of a thread. IIRC he went through at least 2 different blankets.

No, I believe you. I was just surprised.
It doesn't take much for me not to spend money :giggle:

Its a shame, they look quite nice.

There's a spray advertised where header tape and stuff like that is sold....

I plugged the little hole in my fire wall

Ironically it is just too darn hot in the garage to start fabricating a heat shield.
:vash:

I have the same issue and friends will ask I have the heat on in the summer until they notice it's not on. Even with the top down, and a muggy day somewhat, that heat will get to you and it'll annoy me till..........forever. I have my manifold and downpipe wrapped. I opted out of the turbo blanket for same reasons listed above. I am all for fabbing a complete heat shield one day but I think just drawing more air into the bay would help tremendously. That heat has to go somewhere no matter how you cover it. In for some real results

Drawing more air into the bay will be great for making your interior cool, but terrible for keeping your engine cool.

At one point I considered running a heavily insulated flex hose from the nose to a hole somewhere in the floor but felt that it would pick up heat regardless.

There are aircraft like vents that rotate to direct air. They come as part of the small triangular windows on the doors.

I hope to be able to better plan my approach tomorrow. Might even stop be AutoZone to pick up some header wrap or some other stuff.

The inside of the tunnel has Thermo-Tec adhesive backed barrier. Image here. Header and exhaust are wrapped to rear axle with DEI 2" header wrap. Car has almost no radiant heat inside. Putting a ton of thermal barriers on the cockpit side of the tunnel is a waste of time. Exhaust will heat all the sheet metal from the firewall to the rear bulkhead to 180° and radiate buckets of heat even if the little heel protector mat is saving your right foot. Keep the tub from getting hot in the first place and you don't need to go crazy in the interior.

Emphasis added for emphasis. If it works for 25hr enduro races, it will work in our peasant mobiles.

I'll let you know how mine fairs. I only drive my car in the warmer months though so it won't be effected by snow and salt. It does seem a little less flexible than it was when I installed it but it's not like I am handling it at all.

poobs 08-27-2013 04:06 PM

I just bit the bullet and ordered a 100" x 2" roll of header wrap for the DP.

Nearly ordered the Flying Miata GRedy turbo heat shield but it really does not seem to fit my Racing Mazda dp.

Put my hand to the metal that makes up the box directly behind the firewall and it was HOT.

On the bright side - anything I do is going to make things better.

And yet, no props :sad2:

(Of course, you should be thanking Emilio for sharing)

Braineack 08-28-2013 08:51 AM

I gave you one for post #30, but -1 for this whiney bitch post :)

I should alos give poobs -1 for wrapping the header instead of insulating the things he wants to protect from heat.
