On desktop, the down arrow to the left of the thread title jumps to the first unread post. This should still work on infinite scroll.

On mobile, clicking on the "red dot word bubble" on the right jumps to the first unread post in a thread:

I will say that the feature to jump pages while scrolling is very cool.

IB Nolan 10-17-2018 07:50 PM

Also, related threads and/or infinite scroll can be turned off. Post #43 for direct link, in User Options.

Joe Perez 10-17-2018 07:59 PM

It just pains me to see engineering time being spent developing features which make the user experience worse and will be turned off by those patient enough to figure out how to do so.

chiefmg 10-17-2018 08:12 PM

Yes to this. At least I finally got the damn related threads crap turned off on the forums I am on that have it. If you want to add new stuff great, but don't cram it down our throats. Why not make it so the default is off? Then those who want it can turn it on and deal with the resulting loss of brain matter.

Savington 10-17-2018 08:22 PM

The greatest flaw of infinite scroll, and moreso with related threads, is that new users won't realize that they are posting in the wrong thread. They should be off by default, or better yet, just not exist as options at all.

Cool, I didn't know that existed. You might want to make that more obvious -- even after reading this it took me a minute to figure out what you were talking about. It's tiny and it looks more like a "+" than a down arrow.

Even so, I still don't see the point to infinite scroll. It's a solution in search of a problem.

New users? Hell, I did that myself earlier today. Hit "PgDn" a few times to get to the "Quick Reply" window and wound up posting in some random thread about Honda stuff.

wackbards 10-17-2018 09:50 PM

That goddamn "related" thread about some teal Honda... For fuck's sake. I know IB has turned back on related threads right away when I see the pic of that car pop up. The stupid ass algorithm thinks a thread about a completely different car is related to every thread on this forum. Not only is the feature super annoying, it's also totally broken.

look eerily familiar?

Problem with the mobile site. When I scroll in one direction then scroll in the other, it doesn't move in the new direction. I have to lift my finger and try scrolling again.

It's really fucking annoying.

Does this shit not get tested in the real world?

Have you not been using the "view first unread" link this whole time? On mobile and/or desktop?

Scaxx 10-18-2018 10:38 AM

Hahahaha that stupid honda thread is "related" to both my ls3 build and my beater thread....wut.

Also, the site is slow as fuck for me now. Pictures didn't take any time to load in the past, now I get fuzzy ass pictures for a few seconds before getting them.

Never knew it existed until now. Desktop -- the mobile app is really cumbersome so I never use it.

You dumb motherfuckers had better fix the prop system so I don't have to load a bumper page and then re-load the thread every time I want to downvote a post explaining another one of your shitty ideas.

concealer404 10-18-2018 12:24 PM

Props working fine on my end. Have you tried consulting your pro props developer?

And when those "fuzzy ass pictures" take too long to load and timeout, they just disappear. There's no broken-image-icon, or anything to let you know that a refresh might show you what you're missing.

That "Go to last read" button has changed my life, I never knew it existed! Now I see it on all my forums. I think it should be on the other end though, next to the "Last Page" link.

Scaxx 10-19-2018 10:54 AM

Can we have an option to turn off any "features" that were added? Cause the site is almost unusable for me on my laptop at home and at work, it's still slow as shit. Turning off infinite scrolling and related threads helped a little. But this sucks. Seriously. It makes it painful to use the site now, and this is pretty much the only forum I use.

Braineack 10-19-2018 02:20 PM

Column widths are in the works. I also have normal colors going in the font color chooser... no more strong cyan

The site may seem slower since it is now showing blurry images as a placeholder until the full image loads instead of just blank spaces.

The blurry photos only download the complete image once you scroll to them, this is so a huge image thread doesn't download 50MB of images if you aren't looking at them yet.

This should help folks on mobile not eat through data and remove some of the page jumps that would occur when images started to load in the past.

If the images just never load or don't clear up when you scroll to them, that's obviously a problem that we should fix. Please let me know which device you primarily use and I'll see what is happening.

Savington 10-19-2018 02:43 PM

Images take forever to clear up on desktop. Why are mobile data-optimization strategies being applied to the desktop site?

IB Nolan 10-19-2018 02:48 PM

It should load the entire page faster and avoid threads jumping all over the place as you scroll on desktop as well. It benefits both but means more on mobile since some users have data concerns on mobile.

The only downside is that desktops often have a faster connection speed and you'll now see some images come into focus as you're scrolling.

But with a fast connection on desktop, the images should be loaded just as you scroll to them.

hi_im_sean 10-19-2018 03:21 PM

Can we just have the option to go back to Monday?

Scaxx 10-19-2018 03:25 PM

So you combined the unusable mobile version with the usable desktop version to make two barely usable versions? Am I getting that right?

Monk 10-20-2018 07:41 AM

Looking at the underlying code in the post you cite above, your images appear to be broken at the source.

For instance, going to http://i935.photobucket.com/albums/a...psgumgawwl.jpg returns an error message from Photobucket.

icantlearn 10-25-2018 12:57 AM

I assume they're gone forever.

I have lost hundreds of photos this way, both Photobucket and others. Look back through some of my instructional posts from years ago, and tons of the images are missing. I've switched to using the photo hosting on MT for all MT posts.

concealer404 10-25-2018 08:56 AM

Can i have an option to turn the fuzzy picture loading off? It doesn't actually help anything in any way. If i'm loading a pic heavy thread, i normally just click on it and walk away until it loads. Now i get to scroll through migraine-inducing fuzziness.

It's terrible.

Turning off infinite scroll and related threats in UserCP fixed those issues, now my biggest annoyance is this. I cat something, get sent to the 'thanks, we'll return you to where you were' page, and i'm not returned to where I was.

Braineack 10-25-2018 10:27 AM

I've never seen this before...and i neg cat everything!

Strongly agree. It's really bad.

Scaxx 10-25-2018 11:24 AM

Yes, please

Savington 10-25-2018 12:18 PM

Fuzzy pics are atrocious, please get rid of them on desktop.

hi_im_sean 10-25-2018 12:42 PM

I've also noticed since the fuzzy pic mod, that the forum now does that absolutely infuriating thing, where you scroll to the last post in a thread right after opening it, and right as you start reading, the pics above load, and change the page length and auto scrolls you back up. I had to scroll back top a post 4 fuking times yesterday. took longer to make it stay on my screen than it took to read the post.

That's a feature, to make sure you don't accidentally miss the first post at the top of whatever page you're on. By the Convention on Internet Etiquette Standards and Practices, Rule #8 states that the first post at the top of any page in a multi-page thread sets the tone for that page.

IB Nolan 10-25-2018 01:27 PM

@hi_im_sean What browser and device are you using? I tested clicking on Last Post across multiple threads and devices and it always stays anchored.

Also, we made a change today that should load the full quality pics earlier. Let me know if there are any noticeable improvements.

sixshooter 10-25-2018 01:36 PM

I think the problem is that he's scrolling to the last post from the top of the last page as it is loading (probably clicks the last page link) instead of clicking on the new post icon link.

hi_im_sean 10-25-2018 01:38 PM

This was on chrome. Yes, only happens when I click a page and scroll to the bottom.

I guess the fix is that I need to use the new post icon..... But, what if i know I want to read the last post on page 7 of 88 of my build thread for example? I don't always want to go to the latest post.

concealer404 10-25-2018 01:38 PM

Still fuzzy, still terrible.

Turns out most stuff like that is host-limited, not by modern internet connections.

I haven't had any such fuzzy picture problems on any forum well.... just any forum, ever.

But i do now, in the year 2018. PROGRESS.

As I have gotten older there are many, many, many things that irritate me. Now I have to deal with similar things on this forum, which has been (relatively) stable since I joined. Change for the sake of same is usually not a good thing. I notice that the only complaints being addressed in this thread are those which are fluff and easily rectified.

olderguy 10-25-2018 08:23 PM

It could be me, cause I am old and slow, but I cannot manage to upload attachments. It gives me a message to wait until the processes complete, but they never do.

Is it because I am using Edge?

Erat 10-25-2018 08:55 PM

Seems to work for me. In chrome. On windows. With a .gif image.

Try un-installing the AOL toolbar, the Yahoo toolbar, the Ask Jeeves toolbar, and the twenty-seven other toolbars that you accidentally installed by clicking on the "You've won a free iPad" link.
