Ugh, taste really knows no bounds.

that FIAT rear end is just plain nasty. I'm actually shocked you lot think it looks better than the ND's rear end.

The ND's rear isn't brilliant, but it's considerably better than the FIAT effort IMO.

Monk 03-31-2015 06:30 AM

Actually, the rear of the ND is the thing I like the least about it. I still think Mazda did a good job, but I like the tail lights and flatter profile of the Fiat bumper better.

the ND rear looks like someone took the F-type, grabbed both sides, and squeezed it in.

and then made sure it was ugly, boring, round, so it looked like a fat whore about to twerk.

Enginerd 03-31-2015 08:32 AM

I think a lot of new cars look identical. No creativity. Reminds me of The Fountainhead.

I don't like the taillights of the Fiat but feel that the rest of the rear end shaping is better than the ND. And holy crap that pic above is interesting.

Still disappointed in the engine. I took my base 2014 Mazda 3 out on some twisty roads and it was fun, but really runs out of breath towards redline. Shift at 6k. If the Miata is a shift-at-6k motor then they've truly missed the point.

Leafy 03-31-2015 04:17 PM

What I want to know is, how mazda managed to make the nd have the same peak power as the 3 at the same rpm, but it generates 2ftlbs less torque and it peaks 600rpm later.

turbofan 03-31-2015 04:18 PM

Never underestimate Mazda's ability to make an underperforming powerplant

Chilicharger665 03-31-2015 04:27 PM

The exhaust and intake manifolds have to be different, so there is your answer.

Turbofan, if only we got the "pure" 1.5 here, then you could have that rev-happy feeling! At an even more pathetic 130hp...
#sarcasm

Leafy 03-31-2015 04:30 PM

Well yeah the manifolds are different but how did they manage to shift the torque peak 600rpms to the right without shifting the peak power?

this should be their motto.

Dyno Reclass...

Here's hoping that tuning make significant power gains. I am just continually blown away by the fact that these modern 4 bangers can have the compression they do, the VVT systems they do, and make so little power.

rleete 03-31-2015 07:29 PM

You know, we are all talking HP numbers here, but I have yet to read a review where the driver wasn't impressed as hell with the total package. Not just average schmoes, but experienced car reviewers. Guys who have drive a lot of cars and know what's up. That says a lot to me.

Yes, it could use more power. There are people that say that about Corvettes, too. But that is not (nor has it ever been), what the Miata is about.

Doesnt matter, its still not going to sell well because mr murica car buyer is going to see the hp figure and then do zero more research and not even show up to the dealer to try it out.

I would see it going the way of the fr-s buuuuut, with a similar price tag, subie rumble... maaad upgrades yo. The boy racers will still pick the flashy choice.

Welp, up to us to piss off those kiddos with teh ultimate package. :jerkit:

My issue, and what may end up being everyone's issue, is the inability to put high hp upgrades into the Skyactiv gas engines. Maybe I searching the wrong places, but every forum that I've seen discussing power upgrades ends at 'compression too high, don't even try it.'

never stopped anyone from taking out the oem pistons and putting in low comp ones.

Skyactiv is new, takes some time for someone to come around with enough money to blow through a few engines.

williams805 04-01-2015 12:33 AM

^zactly
Throw a flat top or dished (or something that doesn't resemble a clingon's face) piston in there. Dumb down the tune so there is no more stratified mode. You might really have something.

18psi 04-01-2015 12:36 AM

Or let smart folks crack the stock ecu, figure out all the ins/outs/strategies, and move the aftermarket forward into newer technology and higher comp+boost.

I say this only because all these comments about low compression "regular" pistons and archaic control on an advanced engine sounds really stupid to me, like putting carburators on a pre-nd

I mean...

I mean....
