My memory was off, it was the first 30ft and not 40ft. The guy should have still felt a pressure rise of some sort. Maybe he was dazed for the instant the lightning fired?

I still can't understand how one could miss the flash, especially if you were so damn close that there wasn't any sound.

I have stood in a forest less than 50 feet from lightning strikes. they are hard to miss! But it is sometimes hard to tell where the flash is depending on how fast you are running for your life.
