speaking of, i read a theory about how Jar Jar is actually the mastermind behind the rise of the sith. So i started watching phantom menance last night to see if it held -- what an awful movie.

(also read another theory that padame never love anikin, but knew he was evil and phyocotic so married him to take one for the team and try to control his rage)

(edit: I see now that this is a re-post.)

Just in case there's a living human somewhere who hasn't seen today's new trailer yet:

I'm going to fan the conspiracy flames by pointing out that we still haven't seen Luke...

... at least, not without a black mask and helmet.

It's a minor quibble to be sure. The weird design of the droid doesn't bother me; I just think it sounds out of place in a franchise with so many iconic sounds (Gungan who shall not be named excluded.)

Time passes.

Technology progresses.

Did a 56k modem c. 1995 sound the same as a 300b modem of 10 years earlier? No, it did not.

I'm more bothered by the fact that, even with the technology to:
  • Travel faster than light,
  • Construct handheld energy weapons the size of a 44 magnum with the stopping power of an M1A2 tank,
  • Restore the functionality of lost limbs with body-integrated prosthetics completely indistinguishable from the original, and
  • Build spacecraft the size of Manhattan,

Nobody has ever thought it might be a good idea to install a 50¢ speech-synthesizer chip into an astromech droid whose primary function, more or less, is to service spacecraft propulsion systems and communicate their status to humans.

This is roughly analogous to requiring a person in 2015 to understand Morse code in order to use an OBD-II scanner.

You might consider moving to Turkey.

The only caveat is you would have to marry your government appointed girlfriend.

That was actually a campaign promise by none other than our brand new Prime Minister.

I can remember thinking, as a kid, "That vehicle is so large, and yet that's all the inventory its carrying?"

Of course, they start out as labor-saving devices, but then the next thing you know there's a hostile robot occupying force marching through your town.

And then you're stuck having to go back in time and blow up the lab where it all started.

Just say "Nay!" to technology.

So this is pretty clever:

Someone is randomly mailing extortion notices to restaurants all over the country, threatening them with all sorts of fallout (from bad Yelp reviews to false reports of illegal labor practices, drug-running, and harboring terrorists) unless the restaurant pays a "tribute" of Ƀ1.

It's despicable and brilliant. 1 bitcoin is just small enough to be worth paying to avoid the hassle, and yet large enough to be worthwhile to whoever is doing the blackmailing. Even if you only get a 10% response rate, that's still ~$370 in for $4.80 in postage; an 8,000% ROI. And there are a *lot* of small restaurants in the US.
