Whatever you call it, squirting plastic string through a hot-glue-gun isn't the same thing as using lasers to melt metallic powder, even though both technically qualify as "3d printing."
If anything, the New York Times' printing press is more similar to my old Commodore dot-matrix printer, as they both work by depositing ink on paper.

Yup. We had a pair of DEC band printers connected to the VAX in college. It was amazing to watch (and listen to) those monsters run.
