But yes, you do have to keep the engine on boil to make time post haste.

Just curious other than the engine what you consider terrible street manners? Even once I put on the Ground Controls, which upped the spring rates roughly 2.5x it wasn't bad, it didn't get a bit annoying until the 35series DZIIs.....they sidewalls made of stone.

The ride didn't bother me at all. I have an 01 on FM's super shitty Vmaxxs with a terrible ride, so the BRZ was luxurious in comparison. I had an 06 NC that I traded in for the BRZ and that engine is weaker in every way on a spec sheet, but it has instant torque in the real world. The BRZ has no pull until 4k. I couldn't stand that. I live in the high desert on a plateau. There are no turns or anything like that, so just driving around town needs to have a modicum of fun, which torque provides. Having a car payment on something that is no fun around town and I didn't want to risk on track made no sense to me, so I sold it. Plus that dark gray paint I had showed EVERYTHING. I work at a power plant and I couldn't drive it to work because the cooling tower would get visible water spots all over it in 5 minutes flat.

The funny thing is: in hwy pulls, peak horsepower is pretty much king.
But I'm with Chili on this one - around town you want lowend grunt, because revving to 8 on a crowded street makes you look like a retard.

I think once the market is more reasonable and turbo/sc kits are more affordable, one of these would be pretty cool on the street. I'm thinking of Innovate's twin screw on e85, or maybe even a small turbo setup using a gtx potato. It would be way awesome if someone figured out a way to fit the new WRX twin scroll snail to the bottom of one of these. They do almost share the whole engine.

We'll see how that works out

One thing I love about the Outback, with the tiny VF39 and stage 2 with an automatic, it has all the low end torqx! Have broken center diff to prove it  But so awesome/enjoyable for a DD that can just go while shifting at 3K and staying in boost. :)

Leafy 05-13-2015 05:30 PM

lol calling a vf39 tiny. I'm just going to go play with my td04 now.

It's the smallest turbo I've ever had on anything that had a turbo!

18psi 05-13-2015 07:12 PM

Your stock Turbo is a 40, which is just a hair bigger than a td04. Definitely not a 39

Oh. Well hell I dunno I thought it was 39, 40 is close! Only one off! :fawk:

Either way it spools pretty quick with the stage 2 setup, I haz no complaints for the most part.

18psi 05-14-2015 12:36 AM

Oh I know, I love the way those things spool, and with an auto its pretty much torque everywhere. It's just a much smaller turbo than a 39, its basically a td04 like leafy's 06 wrx.

The turbo nomenclature on subaru's makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. The numbers mean nothing haha

I think there are a few companies making turbo kits with EFRs.

Yes, around town they don't make V8 or churbo torque, but it's still plenty enough to get around in traffic without an issue.

18psi 05-14-2015 09:08 AM

Yeah, it's all relative. Favorite part about my z06 was the effortless thrust at any rpm. I could dip into the throttle at 2k and just be pushed back in my seat.

Different strokes. I think my "rev-high and drive like RACECAR" days ended when I sold my last RSX Type-S.

I totally forgot about EFR's on those cars lol, maybe cause I've never seen one yet. Yeah, a 6258 would be most excellent

z31maniac 05-14-2015 09:49 AM

^I also miss that about my Coyote mustang. Shove everywhere and still screamed up top.

gorillazfan1023 05-16-2015 08:27 AM

Need some advice. My friend just bought a 2006 Forester XT. I drove the car and instantly was like "this is junk". Flat out in 2nd gear and it couldn't get past 3500rpm, just wouldn't rev at all. Most of the time it will rev but it has stumbling feeling, like its lacking fuel, other times it just refuses to rev, and finally, sometimes it just works and then is quick.

Last night I was in it again and now it bogs between shifts. Change gear, no power for a second or two then starts accelerating again. It also gets appalling gas mileage. I know its the XT and should get worse then my non-turbo but it gets like 23mpg on the highway. Maybe that's just how it is but it seems low to me.

I was hoping I could get an internet diagnoses for this thing. I was going to put fresh plugs in it just because it has 116k on it and I'm sure they're original but when I pulled the passenger side they looked surprisingly good. Any help would be appreciated.

TurboTim 05-16-2015 08:59 AM

Any CEL? Anytime my Subarus acted funny they threw a CEL. Sounds like a bad coil pack or exhaust valve but those should throw a CEL.

And 23 MPG is great.

Clogged fuel filter.

18psi 05-16-2015 01:31 PM

They have non-serviceable fuel filters inside the tank, very very hard to clog.
I'm going to go with boost leak or possibly bad avcs valve. You need to scan/log the car to really tell

gorillazfan1023 05-16-2015 03:01 PM

Car has no CEL which is annoying, I thought fuel filter until I found out it was an in tank unit. The dealership he bought it from took it to a Subaru dealer for maintenance and they noted "Manifold pressure good" So I was assuming no boost leak, though I know they are prone to leaks. Could the AVCS really affect drivability that much? I mean it goes from my sohc is faster then it, to "wow this is pretty quick"

Edit:

I did some quick research on the AVCS and that could be a culprit. My friend is bringing the car over later and I will check them out.

I did not know that.

Anyone know whats needed to tune your own car? I know surprisingly little about this on Subarus tbh. and I dont mean accessport, I mean whatever computer program is needed and the cable (tactrix I think its called).

Is it really any cheaper than just buying an AP?

18psi 05-18-2015 11:46 PM

oh boy...

aidandj 05-18-2015 11:47 PM

can i haz megasquirt 4 sti?
