Hey, I get it, I'm an eagle scout. 90% of the U.S. population works in either customer service or an office building, yet every EDC thread is peppered with knives for some goddamn reason. If you're in a trade that requires it, good for you.

 

Knives are for skinning wires, opening packages, cleaning fingernails, slicing apples (not in that order). Lots of handy uses.

for separating your keys into categories and then putting together what you need for the day (appropriate car / office, etc).

 

It really depends on where I intend to be. Hanging around the house is different from going to work, and spending all day at a robotics meet is certainly different as well. I try to be prepared for the expected tasks of the day, as a good scout should.

Camping means I have camping tools (like my leatherman skeletool), but I don't take that to work.

Totally agree. It could also be that the majority of people who know what EDC means (or care enough to respond to these threads) use knives regularly. I also like all my EDC stuff to be routine, sure I don't need to carry a knife at home when I can open the utensil drawer to get a knife for a cardboard box. But, if I carry a knife all day at work, then don't have one at home, it feels like something is missing. So it's easier for me to just load my pockets up with a knife, flashlight, etc all the time.

If I counted right, 5/11 people who listed their EDC included a knife. That just means that 5/11 people who are active on this Miata forum (who often seem to be in a technical field) and took the time to look through the thread so far carry knives. I bet if you walked around a financial office and asked everyone one by one it'd be a much slimmer percentage.

Not arguing or anything, I've had the same thought and think how many people carry a knife is really interesting. Part of the reason I started the thread.

Keys, i just have a fairly generic mini carabiner and keep each vehicle on a separate ring, house/garage keys on another, and a ring for loyalty cards. Would like a better "thing" for keys.
Sunglasses: I carry these any time i leave the house, usually just perched on my head if i don't have immediate need for them. Because i abuse the hell out of my glasses, i wear Shady Rays Signatures. Not-for-profit charity company that makes a pretty solid pair, feeds the hungry, limited free replacements, yadda yaddda yadda.

 

Absolutely could be self selection bias due to the thread title. Or tacti-cool idiots with disposable income.

 

Actually carry in my pocket;
- About $1.50 in assorted change
- Samsung Note 3 (personal)
- iPhone 7, naked (work)

Clipped to my belt loop;
- Keys; house, car(s), asstd "stuff"
- pen knife, indeterminate brand

Everything else goes into my bag;
- Laptop
- Wallet
- Notepad & pen
- Charger & cable
- Headset

coins/swiss army knife (ambassador, 3") - left front
money clip/cellphone - right front

the swiss army knife is so handy, i find i use the scissors way more than the knife blade.
nothing clipped to my belt.

 

I understand why everyone carries a knife. Since it's attached to a multitool. Technically we all carry scissors, phillips, flathead, knife, pliers, wire strippers, bottle opener, file, ect. But it's all in one tool.
It's kind of the same reason i didn't say i carry a flashlight, or a camera, or a GPS system since technically we all do. Pretty much every smart phone has these tools built into it.

 

I got rid of having a large keyring a few years back and it has been so much nicer just carrying the keys I need for the moment. I don't know why I ever thought I needed all my vehicle keys and every shed/garage/whatever key on one ring when I can only drive one at a time. Each vehicle now has it's own dedicated ring with only the vehicle key and/or fob and a house key and key for my detached garage on it with no extra bulk. Though, I will say I have almost forgotten keys at home when trailering one of my cars to the track...it's obvious to grab my truck key since that's what I'm driving, but as I am walking out the door it's not always so obvious to also grab the key to the vehicle on the trailer haha. The only key ring that is still slightly bulky is my truck keys - it has a fob, ignition key, rear tailgate key, gun safe key since neither the glovebox or center console lock, house key, and garage key. I find it annoying now that all my other key rings are so much more streamlined and easier to have in my pockets. I'm considering going back to a carabiner hooked on a belt loop for keys. I had done it in the past when all my keys were on one ring and the jingling drove me nuts. Might be better off now.

Anyway, my off-work EDC:
- Glock 27 right front IWB appendix carry
- Google Pixel front right
- Kershaw Leek clipped front right
- Keys back right
- Spare magazine clipped back left
- Slim leather tri-fold wallet front left
- Occasionally I'll carry my Fenix PD35 clipped front left

At work (Firefighter/Medic) I can't carry a firearm nor do I need my keys on me and I carry a different knife:
- Google Pixel front right
- Cheap-o Smith and Wesson "Extreme Ops" knife clipped front right
- Wallet front left
- Small notebook front left behind wallet
- Pen clipped front left
- Small Streamlight right angle flashlight, Motorola radio, Leatherman, and work gloves on radio strap.
