Suicide:
Messy but high probability or clean but possible failure?
i.e. shotgun to the head or poison/drug overdose?

Support your opinion with pertinent facts.

Is the purpose of suicide to become dead, or to leave a pretty corpse?

Answer that, and you'll know the correct method.

Why not have both?

100% certainty.

Down a handful of sleeping pills, wash down with a pint of rotgut, jump off a tall building while swallowing a shotgun.

Interesting take on it.

Post was because a friend/neighbor of a coworker blew his brains out. Daughter found him, and was very traumatized because of the condition of the body/room. Apparently the entire room is covered in gore.

Wife is unsure if she or the daughter will ever go back to the house. What is seen can not be unseen.

So, speculation as to different methods, and which would leave a less of a mess. No, I am not going to off myself. At least not yet.

Then, it's not really a question of how messy it is -- it's a combined question of how messy it is and who is likely to find you.

You could jump off a tall building or in front of a train, and it's unlikely that a family member would happen to be the first person on the scene.

If your concern is traumatizing those who love you then you shouldn't be committing suicide in the first place. I can only think of a few situations in which suicide is an acceptable solution and they all involve terminal illness and a conversation with your family before the deed is done.

From a purely objective standpoint:

If you have a wife and kids, and you have decided to kill yourself, it is a relatively trivial point as to whether brain matter is plastered onto the wall in the process. Your suicide is going to be a hugely traumatic event for them in either case, and worrying about the cosmetic aspect of said act is little more than narcissism.

And in most cases, except for ones like Ryan mentioned, it is a supremely selfish act. I think it should be stigmatized with that in mind. We should always follow the declaration that someone committed suicide with, "that selfish *******." Like this, "Did you hear that John from accounting committed suicide? That selfish *******."

Suicide, forget that, death is messy.
Even if you prop yourself up in your leather recliner by the fireplace for a stately effect before you wash down a handful of pills with your favorite cognac, you'll still **** yourself as soon as you die.
Also, as stated a few times already, there's considerable trauma for family and friends.

Ladies of yesteryear used to put on a ton of makeup and sit in bed with a couple large pillows and the covers pulled to their chest to avoid an ugly scene. Vanity all the way and past the very last breath.

I was reading an article about suicide a few weeks ago, the one thing that stood out in my mind was that men are 4x more likely to succeeded at suicide then women, while women are 4x more likely to try it and fail then men.

Well, there's failure, and then there's planned failure.

Some of the comments on the article said that it is probably due to men using a shotgun or things of those nature, while women would try oding on pills and such.
