2. Lie to your boss.

You think my last company gave me advanced notice I was being laid off? Even though things like that are planned weeks/months in advance.

 

Why not just work 7 hours and 1 hour vacation every day?

 

Nobody at the office gave me any **** when I sent several emails to the VP (my boss) at 12:30 am, 1:45 am, and 4:15 am last Thursday saying that I was going to the hospital, at the hospital, and heading into surgery, respectively.

You just need to take the whole rest of the week off as well, and, optionally, slash some holes in your abdomen with a sharp knife and then patch them up. Your boss won't know whether the incisions were performed before or after the interview.

I recommend 3M "Steri-Strip" reinforced skin closures, followed by Nexcare brand waterproof transparent dressings with some store-brand gauze padding underneath. Don't forget the iodine-based surgical prep disinfectant (before cutting) and antibiotic ointment (after closure).

However, If you apply that blindly I'll laugh at you. A lot.

 

It's really quite simple, you say "I have an appointment and need to be out for 4 hours this afternoon". If he asks for details you decline to give them, if he continues the you say that they are none of his business. He can draw whatever inferences he likes from that, but if you're out interviewing then you're pretty far down the path of planning to leave so it's not likely that it's going to have any significant impact on your life.

And, if they ask:
"- if I was comfortable talking about it I would give details, but I am not."
If they ask "are you going to an interview?"
- "Again, it's personal. This isn't 20 questions. With all due respect, I'd rather not talk specifics at this time"

 

I think that's the right tact. My situation here isn't terrible and I'm not looking to burn any bridges. I'm just going to make a point of saying that I'm sorry for the short notice but it's a personal appointment that can't be rescheduled. If he needs more information than that, oh well.


Unrelated pet peeve: News stories about a "ground-breaking new study" that don't link to said study.

 

Take the whole day off. You have an appointment for a colonoscopy because of blood in your stool. There is a history of colon cancer in your family. Don't come back to work that day, either. Nobody comes back that same day. It is a common thing and should shut him up.

Or, tell him you are having difficulty urinating sometimes and have a doctor's appointment if you don't want to take the whole day.

Doctor's appointments happen on short notice, and managers are *extremely* hesitant to inquire as to specifics, as this gets into murky territory as far as HR and discrimination laws are concerned. (Speaking as a manager, here.)

 

Personally, I would avoid making it a direct lie, if only because the more complicated you make it the harder it is to keep it straight. "I have to go to an appointment" is short, simple, true, non-specific, and gives him all of the information that he needs or is entitled to know.

Or, doesn't anyone get food poisoning anymore? I ate something a few months ago that made my face turn pale white, and I had to hang by a bathroom for most of the day.
