Daytona turkey run is this week and I'm flying over tomorrow(21st) an will be staying for a week both in Orlando and Daytona. It would be fun to meet some members to talk cars and have a beer or two.

Last time I met Sixshooter and miata2fast for brews and food, fun guys and good food.

 

The shooting marathon is over (for now).

We shot 17 episodes in total for season 2, and it was THE most exhausting thing I have undertaken in my whole life.
Waking up with painful leg cramps or burning arms in the middle of the night was just no fun.

Season 2 will be on the air in mid January. I heard TRT (Turkish Radio and Television) wants another 24 episodes immediately.

My personal objective is convincing the producers to build something, anything that will be able to leave the terra firma.
Could be a glider, ground effect vehicle, powered aircraft, hovercraft.. Anything.
I am already warming them up to an air boat idea.. once I get them to buy the propellers and various hardware for that, moving up to an airplane will be easy.
I have been into aviation all my life... I really would like to put all that knowledge and experience into a real project.

 

On a completely unrelated note, I am looking into buying a lathe.
Nothing too fancy, a universal manual lathe, oh, and a decent MIG welder.

I have fabbed and long term tested a couple parts for the Miata, and I'm pretty sure I can market those.
It would give me a reason to spend some quality time enjoying tea and listening to music in the garage.
My boss wife approves the expenses, so I'll spend some time shopping around.

 

Call me when you get to town. I'm going to be possibly going up to the TRR but am definitely signed up for a track weekend at Road Atlanta on Dec 2-3 and will be meeting a few more members up there, if you are interested.

 

The problem with any real flight is physical danger to the pilot, of course. Nobody wants to see that happen. But a ground effect flying boat would be cool and safe except for the drowning and getting chopped up by the prop, lol.

 

I can always convert it to RC with a human analog in the pilot's seat if they deem it too risky.

 

How big? The Chinese stuff (Harbor Freight) is pretty much considered a kit, rather than a working lathe. However, Grizzly and others, like LittleMachineShop.com have some pretty decent offerings. Nearly the same machines, but held to a higher level of quality. Not sure about shipping to your corner of the world, though.

And if you do get a lathe, budget for a small mill at the same time. I waited years to get the mill, and my projects were always on hold because of it.

There are also some "multi function" lathes with a milling/drill press attachment over here.

Interestingly, eastern european lathes are virtually bullet proof machines and last forever.
There are some decent used lathes, but small ones are pretty rare.
I'd much rather buy local for obvious shipping reasons.

 

I'd avoid those unless space is a huge issue. Machines that try to do more than one thing rarely do any of them well. Most of those machines are known to be a compromise, and not very rigid.

 

To a certain extent, I can verify this.

A guy I used to work with had one of these. It was an adequate lathe, but it wasn't much good for anything else. Better to buy a real lathe and then a real whatever else.

Would have been great if the lathe spindle supported indexing relative to the drill, but alas.

I ask because they use them at UNCC engineering lab to make real stuff (albeit small stuff), and seemed robust on a quick tour. Not sure which model.

 

They're not terrible. It's just that, for the money, you can usually get a much more rigid milling machine. More rigidity (usually) equals better accuracy.

I have a Grizzly mill. Before that, it was a HF micro mill. Not the greatest machines, but I learned to work within their capabilities. Producing good parts is faster/easier if you don't have to account for machine deficiencies.

 

The old photobucket plug in fix for chrome doesn't work, but I found one that does.

For people as dense as me:

1. Open Chrome
2. Click the 3 dots in the upper right-hand corner
3. Scroll down to "more tools"
4. Click "Extensions" and then "Get More Extension"
5. Type in "photobucket embed fix jesse evers"
6. Re-find all your tech info that was ruined by the photobucket money grab, and screen shot everything before the plugin stops working

 

I've got a bridgeport and a small south bend lathe (10"). I use neither as often as I expected to lol. The bridgeport is a glorified drill press most of the time. The lathe barely gets used.

Neat to have around though, just in case.
