What is the treadwear rating on the KU36? How have they worn for you so far, or have you had them long enough? My StarSpec are almost ready to be replaced, already. Only had them for maybe 9 months of daily.
The 912's are phenomenal tires! Excellent in every situation I ever put them in. I went through two sets, and never really had a complaint. Good grip, comfortable ride, low noise, good in the wet, good in colder temps. Never tested on ice, but I'd guess they would hold up about like any other all season. |

So I'm looking in to the PLX DM-100 but I know nothing about CAN. According to the DM-100 specs it supports the following CAN protocols: ISO-9141, VPW, PWM, KWP 2000, 11Bit CAN, 29Bit CAN.
I have read that the MS CAN protocol is different, but how hard would it be to either: 1) fool MS into also outputting data in a format the DM-100 could read OR 2) use a Raspberry Pi or Arduino or something to convert the protocol? I haven't used C in a while but I used to be good enough. Is this within the realm of possibility or should I just start trying to build one of Hakan's LCD displays instead? Also I will be using my Reverant MS3 basic if that makes any difference. |

So my little brother is getting my dad's '06 GTI as his first car, lucky bastard.
He was talking about getting a chip tune, but I told him that was dumb and a waste of money, he should learn to tune it himself. That's when I found out apparently nobody in the VW world tunes themselves. They all take them to shops. Is this normal with other cars? Is it possible I've only been exposed to the cheapest and therefore most DIY-oriented car community in MT.net? |

I just thought it was strange that there were no tuning utilities or anything. But I forgot that they are direct injection.

You could use a quantum-state teleporter to get the fuel into the cylinder, and so long as it's under the control of an ECU which can be interfaced to by external means, it can be tuned. It may simply be that no inexpensive or open-source utilities yet exist to allow the average user to interface with the ECU. This would be in contrast to, say, the Subaru designs, wherein the RomRaider application is freely available and the necessary interface hardware (a USB to OBD-II adapter) is quite cheap. |
Been looking at GTIs a lot here recently and I've found the same.
I'm far from an expert, but it looks like VW piled a grip of superfluous vehicle functions (antitheft, climate control, etc) into the ECU and nobody wants to deal with trying figure out how to make it work. That, and it seems the factory tunes are so conservative that you really do see a bump from a chip. |
I did find VCDS for that kind of stuff. But that's a far cry from something like tunerstudio. And I still don't think you can modify timing or PW or anything with it (at least on the MkV).
I guess I forgot what the VW 'scene' is like. With lots of mods I assume there are at least a few people who know what they are doing. But I guess that it's more about low-and-slow. Maybe when I become a megasquirt expert I will figure out how to get it to run the FSI. |

I have less than 100 miles on the tires so far, talking about wear would be pointless at this time. They are far better than my worn T1Rs even in their unscrubbed state. |

That's pretty funny. But it only seems to suggest 3 or 4 places and keeps repeating them when you click "No that place looks like shit".
