Why must I always have a/v issues. My PS3 won't display directly through the TV or through my receiver. The receiver won't display either the PS3 or 360 to the TV, but the 360 does display directly to the TV. So I'm guessing my TV is not the issue, but for some reason both the PS3 and Pioneer receiver are having issues with either sending, or the TV is having a hard time detecting either of them. I just want to watch some fucking HULU!!! The weird thing is it has sort of been getting worse with this. I would have to occasionally turn off the receiver or PS3 to make them detect. MY old Sony receiver had this same issue with detecting signals and formats. FUCK!

mgeoffriau 05-19-2013 10:39 AM

Tried different cables yet?

I went HDMI on all my shizzle. Want some extra a/v cables?

NA6C-Guy 05-19-2013 11:44 AM

I have plenty, thanks, and yes I've tried different cable. It worked fine with these cables for years, with only the occasional hickup. I can't get the PS3 to display even on my computer monitor, after resetting the video output settings. My receiver also won't display anything through any of the HDMI ports to my TV or monitor, though it will still do sound through optical for my TV. 360 will display directly to TV fine however, so I think that rules out the TV. I'm still not sure if this is just a big handshake failure clusterfuck, or if maybe a power surge fried components in both my receiver and PS3. Ugh... goddamn it.

Because HDMI. 60% of the time, it works every time.

Component is king where compatibility is concerned. No handshaking, no DDC, no HDCP, no EDID, no CEC, no ARC/HEC, it just plays video.

Werd. Only issue with that is what to do with sound. My receiver only has a few alternate audio inputs that would work with my PS3, 360 and computer, as well as the TV only having one component in, and a few RCA... If I could find the component cables that came with my PS3 I'd try that and see if it would work. I guess I'll have to go buy some, or make a big monoprice order.

Then I also have to worry about audio inputs on the receiver and the formats. All I have after further looking is one measly optical in. So I guess I could run that to the PS3, but that would leave my other devices without surround sound support.

Well, I can show you how I solved this problem in my own system (back when I had multiple devices with optical outputs):

A couple of these: Amazon.com: Digital Fiber Optical (Toslink) to Digital Coaxial (S/PDIF) Converter: Electronics

And one of these: (using only the yellow jacks to switch between four coax digital audio channels to the one digital audio input on my receiver.)

Bear in mind, my TV is analog and I don't use 1080p, so YMMV. I acknowledge that component is theoretically less optimal in terms of video quality when the display device itself is digital and has a fixed horizontal resolution.

NA6C-Guy 05-19-2013 02:34 PM

You noticed no quality degradation? I was thinking about something along those routes. Seems to be my only real choice.

What, on the audio?

Of course not. TOSLINK and S/PDIF carry exactly the same data insofar as things like AC3 and DTS are concerned, with the only difference being the physical layer. You can convert freely between them with no transcoding losses at all, because no transcoding occurs in the process.

NA6C-Guy 05-20-2013 05:06 PM

Woot. Components fixed me up just fine. When I first hooked them up, I was a bit pissed off to see rolling horizontal lines. Found a spare computer power cable and broke the ground off of it... no more ground loop, no more horizontal bars! Image seems to be just as good as it was with HDMI. I do want to get the actual Sony component cables though. I'm using some really shitty, cheap looking universal cables that fit all consoles and have a few extra wires. Now to get a component switch.

I actually think the picture is better somehow. It seems softer, and less "harsh" with high contrasting colors or black and white.

Well, that's pretty cool.

What does a $4,500 book about a car look like?

That is so bad ass.

I would rock that on my bookshelf....if I was rocking that kind of cash that is.

So this is kind of interesting:

“Dead Drops” preview at Aram Bartholl – Blog

This guy is basically just going around NYC embedding USB flash drives in random walls. I have utterly no idea what practical advantages such a system might offer, and there's no way in hell I'd plug my laptop into a random USB port which I found on the street (I don't even charge my cell phone on the public USB "power outlets" now commonly found in airports, simply out of paranoia) but it's certainly an interesting concept.

...what? That shit won't work. Like you said, I'd never plug any device of mine into that shit. I bet every asshole troll with a virus has found all 5 locations and "dropped" it off.

That's why I like Linux. I never fear strange links or files. While there are Linux exploits, they all target server uses like web servers and such.

I'd encourage you to spend 5 minutes and build a safe charge adapter that passes the 5V through and shorts the D+ and D- to let you charge without data.

(this may not guarantee >500mA charge rates however)
