In CA, there's one additional step, which is filing the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability. Essentially, this is a form that says to the DMV "I, the owner of record of this vehicle have, as of this data, relinquished my ownership interest in, and control over, the vehicle to this other person." The basic idea is that until you file that form, you can technically be held liable for any criminal or civil charges arising from the misuse of the vehicle.
Rules vary by state, but check to see if some similar concept exists where you are. It'll be right on your state's DMV website- just search for "what to do when selling a car" or similar. |
Don't forget to notify the city of the ownership transfer, or else you might end up in a pissing contest over property taxes next year.

Is this a common thing? |

Exactly- just because you handed the buyer a signed title and bill of sale doesn't mean that he actually did anything with it. So as far as the police / DMV know, it's still your car if he/she crashes the car into a bus filled with orphans, puppies and and jet fuel and then flees the scene on foot, or makes a car bomb out of it and blows up a school, etc.
It's unlikely that you'd ultimately wind up in prison as a result of such a thing, but the form can potentially save you some time, hassle and legal fees. |

Curious- this is the first I have ever heard of paying property taxes on a car. In the states in which I have owned vehicles (FL, OH, CA), the only recurring taxation was the annual registration (tag) fee, and this was simply a matter of "If you don't pay the fee, then we won't send you a new registration certificate and sticker."
Is this a common thing? You get an additional sticker. Interesting point of note: this state makes it very easy to NOT register your vehicle and NOT get its state safety inspection done. There is no reminder system, no letters, no warning. One day you just look at your tags or your inspection sticker (hopefully before John Q Law does) and go "oh shit!" and end up screwing up your saturday morning getting inspections done so you can renew your registration. The worst part is the date on the stickers are both completely not visible from the driver's seat. One is front facing on the front window, one is rear facing on the license plate. I suppose you could walk around the car, facing the car, in a different way every time you get in but frankly I just get in and drive and look at my mail. Which sucks for me. |
lol @ paying annual tax on cars. Seriously, what a shit-hole, money grabbing POS government we've created.

For what it's worth, this county is pretty tits mcgee in terms of provided services. unlimited yard waste and construction debris pickups at the curb! they will take used tires too. |
Well, I know that's certainly high on the list of things I look for when researching a new community.
Good schools? Meh. Low crime rate? Meh. Free construction debris pickup? Right on! |

Good schools? Meh. Low crime rate? Meh. Free* construction debris pickup? Right on! *Free in the same way that meals are free on a cruise: you paid for it, it's just a matter of whether or not you get your money's worth. |
So Arlington County is providing its residents with a strong incentive to produce large amounts of construction debris and used tires, in order to ensure that they get their money's worth.
Thanks, but I think I'll stick with good roads, well-funded public schools and a competent police dept. :D |
we have good roads, excellent public schools, and free* kindle books at the library.
and the police successfully recovered our stolen honda. |

So one of our customers that we're doing a crazy patio for just came by the office to go over a few things and they noticed my collection of relics and antiques. We talked about a few items in particular, I let them pick through my bottle collection and take what they liked and they even wanted to check out the Miata.
Then she told me "I have something in my garage for you that you'll love". She said its the original bank vault gate from the empire state building, complete with the lock, key and paperwork. She wants me to take it for free and come get it next weekend. lol Really nice people to work with and I'm lucky to have started a new relationship with them. I'll make sure I post pictures once I go pick it up! :bigtu: |

thanks fairfield weather, thanks for being warm and shit, thanks for reminding me that my lazy ass should really fix the valve lash on my poopra's 7m.
clatter clatter clatter, so embarrassing at idle. anyone know of a redneck way to use something as a good feeler gauge for about 0.25mm? |
Must be a Toyota thing. The 22re in my Celica sounds like a diesel, even after adjusting the valves with it hot. Apparently it's pretty common.
