Well... that was the shortest lived career idea I've ever had. I had been reconsidering, or really considering my career, since I've never really had anything more than jobs, and decided to go back to school. I had been intending to go back for MLT/CLT for medical laboratory work, which I have the most history in out of all of my random ventures into just about everything under the sun. But while I had been unemployed for about 5 months I got the bright idea that I wanted to pursue my passion of cooking, so I decided it would be a good call to go back to school and pursue "culinary arts". Found a job at The Cheesecake Factory, bottom of the totem pole as a dish washer. Figured I could move up the ladder while I went to school. ******* NOPE. Not sure how I so poorly judged my reaction to that environment and job. I guess there is a reason that that industry is made up of probably 75% Mexican immigrants, because nobody else wants to do that bullshit. I quit tomorrow and return to living off of money scraping from side work and selling things if it comes to that. Irresponsible, sure is, but I refuse to work if it makes me as unhappy as that place did. I guess I'm just fortunate to have a dad who let me stay with them free of rent at the age of 27, and a mother who supports me as well as she does. I'll just have to hit the market hard and find something else asap, preferably back into the medical/diagnostic field since I will eventually be going to take care of that MLT/CLT program I had originally planned to do. The only field I've ever worked in that I felt comfortable and stayed for more than a few years. Just a random *** rant for the random *** ramble thread.

 

I have so many questions about that post because so much of it seems alien to me.

No, I was too busy rewiring my POS car. I probably also wouldn't have survived all the luggageracks there.

 

I am a definite Android guy but every now and then I get a twinge of wondering what the Apple stuff is all about (actually, a Mac was my second computer after a VIC20....). I pretty much use custom ROMs on both my unlocked and rooted phone and tablet and after just upgrading to 4.4 Google has yet again managed to leave me thinking 'holy ****, you can do that with this little thing'?

Google NOW integration with the launcher is just friggin awesome. The integration of voice into search is something you wonder how you ever lived without it.

Probably Google knows enough about me by now to anticipate anything I may be trying to do.... Oh well, maybe we should dump the NSA or just contract it out anyway.

I just got a mac pro. I love it. And I'm a die hard PC guy. I'm eating a lot of the words I said about macs. They are still expensive, and you can almost always get something with better specs for the same price. But this computer runs 100x better than my beastly gaming laptop with 16gb ram/gtx780/4th gen i7/etc etc... Plus it's much much smaller, both in size and weight. The OS works well, I cringe every time I have to use a windows computer now and try to do tasks that worked flawless on the mac. Windows 8 is such a cluster **** too, it was the main reason I switched over, I can't stand it. I would stick with ubuntu if they had better driver support, but unfortunately it doesn't.

 

Won't be long and Brain will be sending out his circuits on the back of bar napkins....

OSX and Apple hardware are very well made. For personal use, I honestly would take a Mac laptop over just about any other laptop brand out there. I have a macbook from 06/07 time frame that is still going strong. Has out lasted all my friends laptops from college who bought other brands. In a professional environment I am not a huge fan of Macs. Controlling them over a network is no where near as easy to do as a Linux shop or a Windows shop.

 

Apple hardware is NOT very well made and has serious QC issues.

Each Apple tower/laptop I've ever seen/used had at least one serious issue.

Cube: Overheated cause no fan
TiBook: the white paint would chip and fall off
PBook 17" G4: Would sleep but never wake up (remove battery)
PBook 17" Intel: The aluminum would bend in 15 different places.

Etc.

 

Does one have any experience with recent 3D printers?

I may need to get one to prototype stuff. I don't need different colors, a single color will do.

Reliability is key, and from what I've been reading, none of the <$3k offerings are any good.

Seriously, what's the volume you envision the parts to be?

 

Probably small volume rapid prototyping. May make small runs of hard to find parts or runs for parts with minimum orders like injection molds.

 

From the guys I talk to the MakerBot machines are pretty good. Microsoft seems to be doing native drivers (Win8 anyway). What about just printing to a service via internet and getting delivered?

That'd let you utilize the speed and bide some time while the tech makes it's way to the next generation.

Edit: I meant volume in "how big" not how many.
