Sam, I appreciate the detailed response, thank you for the feedback.
My AR is currently only used to punch holes in paper. My AR is an M&P 15 Sport, I haven't changed anything on the rifle. I can shoot a decent group at 50 or 100 yards, but can't see exactly where they hit the target. The range I shoot at goes to 300 yards, so my thought was a magnified optic would help/entertain me at the range.
I was hoping a magnified red dot would be the best of all worlds, but it doesn't sound like it is.

You mean you don't think a $700 .22lr upper is a good deal?

My question about magnified red-dots for a civilian is... what are you going to shoot with it? If it's paper, then it's a complete waste of money. If it's animals, then you want a real scope. If it's for competition, then you're out to lunch. The only place one of those makes sense is in combat unless it's simply a toy.
Your average Aimpoint Micro or clone (Primary Arms, Konus, Bushnell TRS25) is going to give you everything you need for the Zombies. If you're worried about actual urban combat during the apocalypse or societal breakdown, and plan to engage humans out to 300yds... then a magnified dot starts making sense... other than that, stick with good iron sites or a real scope. For home defense, NOTHING other than good iron sites makes sense.

Just finished putting this little project together with used bits and pieces. LWD Timberwolf frame, OEM Glock slide, .40 S&W extended compensated barrel, Glock bits except for LWD 5# connector and smooth trigger, 22-rd magazine. Should be a fun blaster. No idea why I need it. May keep it if it's fun, but will probably sell it.

It's been drilled into me for a long time now, that nothing turns people off of hunting more than seeing the "suffering" of a huge exit wound or pool of blood in victory photos. A non-sportsman will NEVER have any interest in engaging you in discussion, learning why you hunt, or be receptive to going out with you if you're photos look like a crime scene... they'll only see the pain and suffering of some poor creature you slaughtered for fun.
As a sportsman, you're probably stoked about going hunting, and naturally wish to share your passion with others. Your buddies who hunt won't give a **** about gross photos, but you will lose your chance with everybody else with just one look at the "ugly" side, and nothing you say will ever get them back.
When you pose for pics, there's a bit of etiquette that should be followed.
#1, pull the arrow out if required.
#2, put the ******* tongue back in it's mouth if required.
#3, wipe up enough blood that it doesn't look a vampire happened by.

A true sportsman becomes one with his prey. Either molest the corpse of that animal, starting with its genitals or stay the **** in your cabin as you are an embarrassment to sportsmen everywhere. Goddamn people like you are responsible for ruining the last manly activity left. Don't even get me started on fishing.
