i hate bench racing, but if anybody actually read my post, they would see that i'm hoping to beat my best time by only 2 seconds in full dry hot (june) texas weather. my best lap dropped 10 sec. at msr-h my first time there with the new coilovers, freak out about that! but yeah i also had aero, r-comps, lsd.

Exactly…there were other variables.

When I do some racing instruction…and beat someone's lap time by 5 seconds…what was holding the car owner back…was not his coilovers.

none that i could find @ hhr though. i take track notes at every event and session, plus my log book. literally the only difference in those 6 seconds was the 8* in air temp. my sharpie could find no other. best laps even happened in the session of the day. 2nd lap, session 4.

Since you said Cali, and times being 1:25s to 1:36... could it be Streets of Willow?

If so, I did 1:39 on ZE912 205 all seasons on VMaxx with 10.5" hub to fender heights. Threw on some Megans, raised the height to 3 15/16" pinch, x8 6ULs with 20mm spacers on the same 205 ZE912s and only did 1:40-1:42. Raised to 4.125", same everything else (coils, 6UL + spacer) but replaced the all seasons with RE-11s and got 1:34.125. I've done this track several times in my old FWD and was only able to do 1:34 when it had worn and uneven R comps, took the Miata here only 3 times... Those 5-6 second improvements can be attributed to many things including driver-- I drove hard to get the 1:34, and there's more time in my car I'm sure ...

Street Class Miata challenge does 1:31 there, including VagaXT who still uses hollow spokes on 195 RT615Ks.

Man if you guys keep dropping 6-10 seconds all the time…you'll soon complete laps faster than uber-budget F1 cars driven by walk on water types. And next year…you'll finish before you started. Then you can crank up the boost, LOL.

Greentee my example was of a driver from flyin miata website. If you look at their afco coilovers you can read the story. I live in Texas and I was @ Harris hill road. Like I said 3 times already, I don't expect to pickup more than 2 seconds in dry conditions. Are you trying to say I didn't notice I had changed my wheels and tires? Did you miss the part about my track notes and log book? Do you think I wasn't trying to pass every Porsche I could the 1:36 lap? I was and I did. Both days. I only drive one way...........flat out. Lol if there's any difference, it's that my tires were more worn down the 1:30 lap possibly giving me a little more grip than full tread as the track dried out.

I don't know who that "other guy" is, but I'm quite familiar with car setup and tuning.

There are way to many variable's to arm chair/sharpie every outcome.

Example 1: Lets say you have a newb in a stone stock miata throw on Xida's and Tiawan coilovers.

Run 1 stock: 1:39
Run 2 Tiawan: 1:37
Run 3 Xida's: 1:36.5

Explaination: The newb was faster with both suspension upgrades because the car at the track needed less body roll. He couldn't maximize his times because he was a newb and the Xida's were only .5 seconds faster because he didn't have the skills/speed to take advantage. He didn't drop that much time overall because he is now exceeding the limits of his tires and brakes.

Example 2: You have a fast amateur roadracer like many here. He has AGX/mild springs, 225 NT01's, and carbotech xp12/10 pads.

Times
AGX: 1:35
Tiawan: 1:30
Xida: 1:28

Why did he drop so much time with just the swap to Tiawan coilovers? My guess is that his tires and brakes were up to the job but his AGX/mild springs were getting over whelmed by the sticky tires. He dropped 2 seconds with Xida because he had an easier time driving the car which allowed him to work/think less and concentrate more on the perfect line/etc.

Example 3: A pro, same car and test as 2

AGX: 1:30
Tiawan 1:28
Xida 1:27.3

The pro drove around the problems with the AGX being too soft and like the added stiffness of the Tiawan shock. The Xida was only .7 faster but the pro said he could do that time for 25hrs while sipping a mineral water. While the Taiwan shock was only .7 slower he said he was so tired after driving the car for just 20min they set him up on a IV drip.


These are my BS arm chair explanations. While they are correct explainations of different situations and out comes, many different explanations could pertain to your setup/driving/lap times.

Don't discount someone dropping 5 seconds...there are way too many variables, even for Mr. Sharpie. Are Xida's the best shock on the market? For a miata, yes. Emilio did a damn good job. Can you drop times with Tiawan shocks? Yes, even Emilio was on the Tein JDM bandwagon before Xida glory, which are just a step up from Taiwan shocks. Can you beat someone on Xida's with Tiawan shocks? Sure, you are the better driver. Will the pro run the same times in racelands vs Xida? No. Will the Racelands drop the most time per $? Sure. Do they suck? Yes. Do these new free coilovers suck? Probably. Will they drop my times? From racelands..yes. From Xida's...no.
