245's and 205's for testing. 205's on 8's this weekend at Mid-Ohio vs the usual 205 suspects. 225 RS3's and 225 Rivals on 9's, and lastly 245's on 9's (No 10's on hand nor will I likely move to them). We'll see how it all goes. The 205's will go on 125whp and the 225/245's will go on 225whp.

I'd be curious how a staggered setup would run. The Miata was designed to be a 50/50ish car, so the geometry is also complimented for that. However, tire cornering stiffness should be matched to the weight distribution, and for a given tire model, cornering stiffness is fairly linear in respect to width.

I think it'd be interesting to setup a Miata with 245 rear 225 front, match the weight distribution to the widths, then tune in the ride heights, camber, and toe and see how it compares to a well set up square car.

In for Porsche engine/tranny swap.

Pulled the trigger, 245s here I come. What are folks seeing for shipping time on these?

slammed200 04-04-2016 03:29 PM

Mine shipped the next day and took 6 days to show up (including the weekend)

Der_Idiot 04-04-2016 03:54 PM

Not bad for free shipping, price was even less than rivals (shipped) by $50.

Well, the weather looks beyond cold for this weekend at Mid-Ohio. Even Sunday which was supposed to get to 60 is now showing a mere 43... I'm not sure I'll run these at the risk of ruining them. Anyone recommend a good FREEZING weather tire?! I'm thinking 205 R1R's or even some 195 BFGoodrich - g-Force Sport Comp-2

Yikes

GT Radial UHP1 still make good grip down to aid 20°F. When warm they're equal to like re01rs. Gt radials claims that they make miata sizes but I've never seen someone carry them and its hard to find anyone carrying that model at all.

I'm sure you were joking, but having seen this done.... don't even try this without shaving, and thus pick a winter sport tire that is winter compound to the cords, not a blizza . ;D.

In case anyone is curious, full tread, the sipes wear into Christmas trees to the point that rolling at walking speed sounds like a kid put baseball cards in your spokes...

I've seen the toyo to be good just above the scary bad point (45f, iirc, which is unlikely). Wasn't the conti DW pretty good in the cold?

Leafy 04-05-2016 10:52 AM

Which Toyos? The r1rs crack if you drive on them in near freezing temperatures. Or at least the old ones did.

It was the r1r's, 99% sure. At the edge of the "we's gunna asplode" temperatures, they were the fastest thing going at an event a few years ago. Iirc, i was on rs3v1's that were cold enough that turning the wheel in reverse just made a chattering sound without a direction change, and a guy with toyos on his mini was putting down decent times. I've seen the hankook v12 do ok in the cold too, but that was on awd and he was burning them off the line every run (preheat).

Definitely looks like there's some tread to lay with wider wheels.... If I want to run 15x10s on an NA am I looking at a cut and flare if I want to run these or would a pull be sufficient?
