Hey hey hey this is just the rough cut out I would have gone farther into the top of the last picture but the manifold gets thin there and there is not a whole lot more I could cut with our mill. I still have a ton to do with a die grinder to smooth everything out and make it flow well this is just the beginning.

I read it.
You would be better for time if you milled more and used the die grinder less.
The mill will make the IM its bitch where a die grinder takes time.

oh well, your having someone else do it.

Yea the only problem is there is not a whole lot of space to grab hold of the mani and with the little mill we have in the building I am in right now that is as far as I can go. I tried flipping the manifold around and machining from the other side but it hits the upright. FML

I would much rather use a mill than a die grinder any day.

Fabbed me up a sweet little mounting plate for me cops. It should be very sturdy. At first I was worried about exhaust heat but it's pretty much fully shielded from the exhaust mani by the valve cover.

Will mount into some pre-existing VC holes that are used for the factory coil harness.

Did you use a sawzall to cut the straight edges on the mounting plate?

Unfortunately, my sawzall is in storage. My car sleeps much more soundly that way.

Marked the holes in the plate by using the sun at noon for an accurate shadow. Note that there are two shadows. On my planet, there are two suns. On my planet we also do not possess the technology which is on your planet, known as a "measuring ruler". Hence, we rely on natural forces for accurate measurements.

Drilled the holes on my deck, to the delight of the neighboring apartments. The measurements were accurate enough. Unfortunately, the bolts I got are too short. The next shortest ones interfered with the plug wires though, so I'm going to have to get those and dremel them off.

Next is to cut the plate.

If someone local has a band saw at hand, or a table saw or cut off saw or something that can make a straight cut, I would appreciate use of said saw. I have a rotary saw but it is with my sawzall.

OK I just used a dremel. I thought it would be all over the place but it's actually easy to cut a straight line with those little cutoff discs.

Here's the plate with the coils:

And mounted up:

Not a masterpiece but it is solid.

I either need to order some plug wires or find some type of bootie or grommet so I can use the wires I have. When inserted fully onto the plug terminal, they sit about 3 inches below the valve cover. Functionally, this is fine, but dirt n stuff can fall in. Any ideas for a bootie or grommet for these wires?

Not a masterpiece is an understatement: it looks like ***.

But if it works thats all that matters. Did you fire it up on them yet? I wonder how much difference they make in normal every day operation and if they're good for more than avoiding spark blow out at high boost.

Is this going to be sequential? How big of a gap will you be running?

Ben told me last year at the megasquirt mega meet that if you call NGK or Magnacore they should be able to make you custom spark plug wires.

Uh thank you? I am not real sure where else to mount them. I have ABS so there is really about zero room on the firewall. I can't mount them on the front of the valve cover either because I plan to cut that for a adjustable cam gear. The intake mani is not an option either because of WI :| On the shock tower???

Did not fire yet- need to do the wiring. I suppose that if my AFRs lean up as result of this, then that means that the new coils' spark is burning the fuel more completely?

Yes, it will be sequential. I will start with .60 gap just to be obnoxious.

FWIW the stock 01+ Miata coils could be run on ANY Miata in a COP or waste spark setup. Factory, they are of course set up for waste spark with the dual output, but if triggered individually, each coil could dedicate it's juice to it's own plug. Right? This would probably work well considering the stockers (when run waste spark) are good to 20+ psi with WI. I have four 01+ coils in hand if anyone wants to try this.

Correct. Unfortunately the price will approach $100. Wondering if there is another solution to make these wires I have in hand work.

Call FM and ask if you can buy just the plug wires from them that they use for their LS coil kits?

Why not use stock wires and shorten them to size?

All it takes is one crimp once you cut and peel the wire. Then you slide the boot back to position.

Because I have two red magnacore and two black stock wires?

Let me look at it more today. I think I would like to try to take a video of the stock COPs sparking vs. the LS2 truck coil sparking. I wonder if and what the visual difference is in the spark at a big gap.

Just a shot in the dark, but will a wire from a 90-93 miata fit on the LS coil? If not, its not that hard to pull the wires apart and mate the two sets together. The autoparts stores sell a decent wire crimping tool for 20-30 dollars. The coil pack plug is weird to the domestic world, but might be common in the import world (Not sure though)

Round off the edges, build a bracket for them to sit up above the VC a bit, or run some sort of high temp 2 sided tape to keep them from rattling on the VC. They look fine where they are, and heat will not matter much. In OEM application, they sit a few inches above the exhaust manifolds anyway, and these coils rarely have issues going dead.

Start with .040" and increase the gap slowly if you feel the need. You are adding a lot more cylinder pressure to the equation then most.

Are there any adverse effects of adding a gap too large?

You can smoke the coil. Coils only send as much juice as needed. It'd be like trying to run a sprint at a marathon event.
