The OEM endlinks with poly bushings suck massively. I have RB poly end links, but you'd be better off with 949 sperical bearing links.

EDIT: You're also missing some spacer plates between the sway bar bushings and the subframe, I think.

black roadster 02-10-2014 11:09 AM

I can't believe the attention to detail on this. I think you are one of the first of more people who will be restoring NAs like this. The car is a classic and this is no different than what some folks have done with other classic cars. Still I'm impressed. Nice job so far!

Vuti 02-10-2014 11:21 AM

Just a note: You have your end links on the wrong side of the bar ;)
And you might be better to torque down your control arms once the car is one the ground to relieve any tension on the bushings.

Not sure if they are the wrong endlinks or what.

I have read that this is a non-issue with Poly(correct me if I am wrong) just multiple people saying it isn't a big deal.

Not a really an issue anyways since the first drive is going to be to get an alignment done.

This (on the rears). Or, as an alternative, skip the rear sway bar altogether. A lot of the fast guys do this.

Common and correct practice with rubber bushings. Not needed with poly. Press ahead!

This car should have xidas. Just sayin', lol :P

Also, no zerk fittings on the control arms? I always told myself when i go poly bushings ill do the zerk thing so i can keep em lubed and not squeaky.

Yeah that is the main reason I didn't consider it. I have contemplated painting the front lip blue though. I saw a picture of a LSB Miata with a color matched lip and it looked clean.

Currently deciding what my next plan of attack is.

1. Assemble all the engine parts together and drop the engine in while my dad is visiting this week. Having a second pair of hands for that would be amazing.

2. Completely finish the wiring before doing anything else

3. Finish the interior up

I want to get the engine in but I know it would make things tight to work around.

Fire, I wish I could afford Xidas. I won't complain though. These SD Bilsteins ride so well on the street. I've never driven a car with specially revalved struts to match the car and it makes it so I don't think I'd ever get a coilovers setup without doing that. Makes the KW V3's on My Jetta seem like crap in comparison.

Also, my pops got a photo of what it looks like after you do that much work in one night. Guess his dog felt the same...I don't remember laying down in the driveway to pass out.

Incredible build..

Have you thought about installing a fender brace from Boss Frog or GarageStar? Now is the perfect time to install it with the fenders out and really tightens up the front end.

hornetball 02-11-2014 10:12 AM

Careful posting a picture like that here. This is a Miata forum you know. An this is a totally erotic build thread.

On the mud guards, I've found that the painted rears hold up great (mine are at ~5 years on a tracked 212K car).

The fronts are lower and will scrape and bend. I ended up amputating the lowest flexible part of my fronts. Need to get them repainted.

I'm headed back down to work on the car tonight, so hopefully I'll have some real updates for y'all when I get the engine all put back together and dropped in the car.

Btw. i have my Trisha-Project car inthe same state (front fenders off) atm. and I just finished a coat of Fluid film Fluid FilmŪ | Corrosion Preventative, Lubricant and Rust Inhibitor followed by a coat of Perma Film PERMA FILM - about us - both product come from the marine industry and are very much the holy grail in rust protection on oldtimers over here...

Just to say, as long as you have the fenders of anyway, you could protect them a bit more...

hornetball 02-12-2014 01:36 PM

As long as this car stays in Utah, it will never rust.

Jeffbucc 02-12-2014 01:48 PM

Sounds almost like interior panel wax spray. Never heard of it before.

Need to research that stuff a little simply due to the fact that it sounds interesting. Not sure how it works with it not "drying".

Hornet nailed it on the head though. 0% humidity and being a high elevation arid desert climate the car will never have a problem as long as it isn't driven during the winter.

I like how it is able to be sprayed in nooks and crannies though!

Diverted my attention again. I have cleaning ADD.

Got rid of all the nasty on the rubber shift boot and cleaned all the old grease out of the shifter ball joint.

Also painted the steering rack segment and cleaned all the sand/grease out of the boot.

The vinyl shift boot is torn so I am going to replicate it in leather later.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392322944

No more rust and protected. Didn't need to be perfect since this is the segment covered by the rubber boot.

Trying to decide if I want to be lazy and give the steering wheel to a upholstery shop or try to do it myself.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392322944

Does anyone know if you need to reinstall this if you are only running the hardtop? I don't think you do which makes me mad that I spent the time grinding the rust off it and repainting it.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392322944

Center console arm rests are trashed on both of them. Might recover them in leather/vinyl.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392322944

Both of these are pretty cracked and faded and scratched too. Ditto on maybe recovering them in vinyl/leather.

OR just not putting it back in at all and finding a diy solution.

about the wheel - give it to a pro, its one of those things that has to be done flawlessly or it will bother you for the rest of your life
about those rails - no need with hard top, but I did reinstall mine beause they are what the carpet clips onto. if you don't mind the carpet not to be fastened down back there, leave em off.
about the console - covering in leather is baller status. less baller status is taking good quality plastic/vinyl paint to it. did that in wife's tsx and was surprised with how clean it came out, but I'd expect it to wear down in about a year

Good to know that the carpet clips into the rails, thanks!

I had to rethink covering the console in leather, not only would that be hard as balls but I'm not sure how good it would look.

I was leaning towards refinishing it with the OEM looking trim paint I used on the wipers.

I'd rather repaint it in a year if needed, plus it is super easy to do as long as you sand the scratches and fill them well. I used a high build primer on the stock headlight housings and it turned out great.

rleete 02-13-2014 04:33 PM

I removed my rails when I took out the softtop. Carpet stays in place well enough without the clips. You'd never even notice unless you were looking.

Think of it as a minor weight savings.

Hmm I'll take a look. I probably will go this directions since the leather on the steering wheel is glued rather than sewed together. Looks like pretty hefty glue too so I don't want to spend the time stripping it all off.

Good work Mike, looks clean. Did you buy your leather online or local?

Didn't do much more work since I was hanging out with my pops, but I did do a deep clean of the garage since it was getting pretty messy. So I wheeled the car into the driveway and got some better shots right at sunset so no direct reflections or stupid halogen lighting.

The car is so light without the engine in I could pull it up the slope with one hand. Love it. Anytime I move my Jetta I feel like I am going to pull a muscle.

I frikin' love how mechanically raw looking it looks without the fenders and bumper on. Amazing how these headlights completely change the front end of the car imho.

I am so damn happy with how this car is evolving. just a picture to show how much has changed.

Not a clue. I'll probably finish the interior and drop the engine in this weekend.

I still have a lot of issues to address with the wiring that Zaphod and Brain are going to help me with.

I'd say a couple weeks. Mostly due to the fact that I need to order some connectors and misc electrical components to rewire the COP harness and a couple other fixes.

Must be hard to own a Miata in Illinois and not be able to drive it during the winter. Everyone always thinks Utah gets crazy winters but we don't get anything compared to the Eastern United States. It's almost over dude!

I would think my pace of rebuilding an entire car in 5 months shows contrary to your thoughts of me being patient!

It probably only seems that way due to my problems with hyper-focus when I do something. I get so absorbed into what I do that I don't notice how much time I spend doing something. I will start a project and all of a sudden 6 hours have gone by and the sun is coming up.

I just want to thank my father for allowing me to take over his garage and giving me the ability to do the work this fast. When I first started this I was going to rent a big storage unit and do all the work in that since I don't have a garage yet.

Hopefully by the time I finish the car I can find a decent place with a 2 car garage so I don't have to commute 45 minutes one way, each time I want to work on the car.

I have racked up over 5,000 miles on my Jetta in just traveling back and forth from Cedar City to St. George just to work on the car. Over 8,000 miles combined in 5 months. Thank god for 45 mpg highway and 80 MPH Utah speed limits.

I know what you mean. It took me SO LONG to get the rear finish panel, trunk lid, and bumpers to all line up right, and I still think it could be better.

I still need to tweak the doors a little better to get them to not move up a 1/4" when they shut completely.

Man I wish I had an extra pair of hands sometimes. Working with jacks only helps so much.

Ain't that just predictable? My wire wheel for my drill is shot so I need to go pick up a new one before I finish.

PRO TIP: Dip your wire wheel in your tub of aluminum polish before your start...holy shit, it literally cuts the time in 1/2 for getting rid of the oxidation.

The center bit of the pan, in this picture, was about 30 seconds of a soft wire wheel on my drill.

Also started cleaning up the rain rail trim a little bit.

What it looked like when I started and the end result. I've been using 1Z Einszett Deep Plastic Cleaner instead of degreaser since the degreaser has been far to damaging lately on the plastic. It works just as well and doesn't discolors the plastic or rubber.

The rubber on the right is still untreated with rubber conditioner

Repainted these brackets which look like they go in the same place as the rain rail trim but I can't find a diagram with them in it or figure out a way to make them fit! Anyone know where they go?
