I briefly glanced over there. Then said nopenopenope and left. I'll re-read it at some point, but I'm leaving for The gorge amphitheater today and plan on turning off my phone for the weekend. Will be a nice break.

$400 isn't going to get you much. The Canon 50/1.8 is often held up as a lens that can do remarkable things for the price. I have one, it's ****, I never use it.
You're probably going to need to buy a used Rebel body, but you might find a 40D or a 50D that's dropped to that price level. If so, go with the 40D or 50D. I shot with a 50D for years before upgrading to a 7Dmk2 last year, it's a great body.
For lens, I'd suggest looking for a Sigma 30mm f/1.4. It's a ton better than a 50mm f/1.8, and it's a more useful general purpose focal length on an APS-C body. I have one, it's my go-to lens for when I want to slim the camera down to something I can carry without looking like a paparazzi. I also like it a lot for low-light photography, because of the 1.4.
