Before I do valve stem seals again I'm going to do a full hot leakdown test, and disconnect my pcv line for an extended drive. I disconnected it for a short time in the garage, but want to see if I'm sucking oil in through that. Also pull intercooler pipes to check for oil. If leakdown is good, and I don't see any other issues then I will do new valve seals. Using the straw method bahurd used when he did his to protect the seals from the stems.

I would not change the valve stem seals until you confirm they are leaking. Since if they are not leaking, changing them won't fix anything. You can pull the intake and exhaust manifolds to inspect. On the intake side you could fish a cheap flexible camera thing off amazon through the intake to inspect without having to take anything apart. For exhaust, that sweet turbo manifold you made would need to be removed to inspect. In my experience the exhaust side leaked worse than intake, but both leaked.

To rule out PCV related is easy. block passengers side, and just hook a hose to the drivers side that does not go to the air intake in any way. This is what I run, it's safe, simple, and guarantees oil from crankcase doesnt' get sucked into engine.

Leakdown would be good too check, but I wouldn't tear an engine down without trying what I wrote above. I find it hard to believe you damaged the new valve stem seals on assembly, that's not a common thing. Hell I don't know anybody in real life that has ever had that problem when building an engine.

Yes, I also find that very hard to believe. The first time I did seals, it was on a 1974 Plymouth Duster with a slant 6. I was but a young buck, never having done any real engine work before. No issues.

I have never heard of anyone, ever having issues tearing seals. If they were that fragile, they wouldn't last very damn long.

Are you sure you got them seated correctly?

Definitely not sure. I pulled the intake pcv line. Going to go on a test drive now. Intercooler piping is all clean. After the drive I'll do a leakdown.

if you installed felpro, they should have come with the little straws for installing. I have some in the garage and they do. thats what mine looks like right now with supergays in it.

Oem. I'm slightly worried I just didn't seat them well enough. I was worried I had pushed the supertechs too far on so I went soft on the oems.

Put another 40 miles on the car with no pcv valve connected. So that's not it. Also got my Det cans hooked up finally.

I have a total of 50 valve stem seals en route to me. Enough to do this 3 times. 3 day autox next weekend. So I'll pull the motor apart tomorrow. Valve stem seals in Tuesday. Test and tune.

Does your leak down tester not go to 100? Or does your compressor not have enough guts?

I've seen people do 50 psi leak down tests, and 100psi. Never seen anyone do 90psi, at least not on purpose.

The maths...they are much easier if you go all ze way to 100.


Regardless, those results look good.

My regulator is busted. Only goes to 100psi. And the instructions say to make sure your air source is 10psi above your test pressure. It also has a chart for 80, 90, 100psi tests.

Another "issue" I'm working with is a really odd VE spike right around 5400 and 50-90kpa.

When I hit that spot without the added VE I go very lean.

Things I've checked:
Fuel pressure stays constant
If PW doesn't increase then it goes lean

Things I'm going to check next:
Disable VICS actuation

With the current VE table everything works pretty well. AFRs stay reasonable through that region, PW just go up by a lot.

Misfire Zone? Or maybe some weirdness with transient fueling? That's a weird part of the map to be in higher rpm but like 20-30% throttle. Does it only lean spike if you try and stay there? Or does it still do it if you start at a lower kpa and increase throttle though it.
