Basically the ones that matter in the performance world are the HX30, HY35, HX35 (multiple exhaust housings) and then you get into the big boy turbos: HX40, etc...They are good for 600-800+hp

Do a google search and look into the housing sizes for the HX35. They can range from around 300hp to nearly 600hp.

Holsets are UBER popular in the DSM and Bimmer crowd. They all swear by them. ****, now I want to get one soon, lol.

That same turbo has been on three different motors, all making over 400whp and has been anti-lagged death launched nearly 50 times. Still works like new today.

Damn those DSM guys don't **** around. That Holstet thread over there had a huge number of 500hp cars. Those Holstets are also cheap! On ebay I see them going for $300 all day. Damn.

It looks like the following are good options:

HY35 (hx40 looks kinda big) $200-$350
GT3582 (found a pretty good looking one for $900 with a .62 AR turbine
PT5857 $700ish
Borg Warner ????? something cheap, need to figure out the model numbers

Yes, I think faeboner has seen the light!

Remember, you can' judge spool characteristics by size. There are a lot of different exhaust housing sizes and the spool (as you can see in the threads posted above) the spool is better than the average Garrett.

Lets put it this way, the spool on a HX30 and HY35 is so good that I would run one with a taco taco manifold and not even give it a second thought. Mid range and top end is very good on the Holsets.

Just make sure you shop smart. There are eBay knock off Holsets now. But it is REALLY easy to tell the fakes from the genuine units.

Buy an hx40 or a HC1 and be done with it. Name brand turbo no problems and they go for 100k miles on trucks so you should be good till your motor dies.lol

There are tons of other really cool alternatives (as you're beginning to see), and you already have shitty luck with garrett. Try something else.

**** you guys who say garrett sucks. mine's been on my car for like 5 years and 40,000 miles or some bullshit and when I pull up and turn off the car from IDLE it spins for a long long time.

i dont know what you guys are doing to your turbos, but I guarantee the name on the side wont fix whatever sand and jizz mixture you put in your oil.

I just pulled apart my turbo.

Compressor wheel is fine. One blade has a little bitty burr at the tip-- will file that off.

After cleaning the compressor housing, I saw a few chips in the housing, but no scratches or gouges. The chips must have been from some **** I sucked in (past the filter that has always been on there WTF). All the blades are ok.

Turbine is absolutely PERFECT. Turbine housing is perfect too.

Oil feed line is just fine-- I started the car for a second and almost a full quart pumped out of the line.

?????????

I called up blouch and ATP and spoke with the techs there. They both said with my oil pressure level being under 60psi, I don't need to run a restrictor. ATP thought that I could have starved the turbo for oil. Blouch said the restrictor shouldn't have starved the turbo and wouldn't hurt it. :|

Regardless, I am going to take the ******* restrictor out and see how happy my turbo is without it. Off to home depot for turbo parts! At this point I will be joymous if my turbo is ok. I would still be very glad to upgrade to some massive turbo but not at the cost of a dead turbo and money flushed down the toilet.

How much shaft play was there? The pic you posted looks like there is enough to get impeller to housing gap to negative numbers which would mean a rebuild of some sort.

Inside the oil feed hole, I see this, which is about an 1/8" diameter. I think it is a female flare?

How do you measure shaft play accurately?

When I grab the impeller nut and tug it around, I can't see it moving, but I can feel it.

Do you mean- "it looks like there is enough play for your compressor blades to touch the housing, as indicated by the marks on your housing?"

Well I got my valve cover all welded up. PCV welded shut, tiny breather hole enlarged, breather pipe annulled, -12 fitting welded on.

Also got a pretty sweet mounting plate fabbed up for my coils. Looks about a thousand times better than my little plate. The fab guy Joe who fabs at altered atmosphere did a very nice job.

Also got my slashcut welded into the pipe. With the check valve, that ****** is unreasonably large. It must have been designed with 600 cubic foot domestic engine bays in mind. Now I just gotta figure out how to assemble the hose to my -12 fitting, which, by the way, would make a superb marijuana bowl for those so inclined (I'm not).
