Every good tuner will dyno tune a car and then take the car out on the street with you with a laptop and make fine adjustments.

 

Really, my tuner spent more time on drivabillity,than on peak power. Peak power is the easy part of the equation, getting your car/tune to behave civilly is where most of the work on a tune should be focused. No one, well almost no one wants a car that only runs well st wot.

 

Same here. And for the record, you can street tune a car while it's on a dyno.

 

I always kinda thought that if you were tuning on a dyno it was dyno tuning and if you were tuning when on the street it was street tuning? Maybe I missed something.

 

You can stick a load on the dyno and drive it like you're on the street

 

That's why I like Mustang dyno's...you can tune it like you where driving on the street.

 

I find if I just drive around on the street and throw a benjamin out the window every 30 minutes I get about 90% of the benefit.

OK I replaced the VVT oil feed line. It leaked at the block. Will try to fix with torque.

Today, Kremlin came over and pulled my trans and stole my old ACT clutch and FM flywheel. At 8 hours into the swap, we could not remount the transmission and gave up. I am acquiring a harbor freight trans jack per Lars' incessant slobknobbery praise of the jack.

I'm excited about the new trans and clutch. I should be able to flat shift from 1st to 2nd now! Fresh synchros! Spiffy light clutch! <3?

 

I found inserting the driveshaft first helped. Give it a very small turn everytime you try to insert the transmission.

 

Regarding tuning, I have tuned a great deal in the past year. It's lots of fun.

Yes, one can tune a great deal on the street.


The only things I will be tuning on the dyno are:

QSV: Dyno is required to see what psi the QSV should open up at.

Exhaust Cam Gear: This can make a HUGE difference in spoolup. From what I read, it can mean a difference of 1000RPM. For me, spoolup=lots of power so this is pretty damn important. I want to see how much power I am gaining and losing.

 

I couldn't get the driveshaft in either :( let me try that again.

 

Isn't the driveshaft keyed?

 

Don't knock the HF scissor lift trans jack. I'd buy them with every trans swap if need be (and when you work on diesel trucks, you do). Put the trans in first and have someone wiggle the shaft back and fourth while you slide the trans into place. MUCH easier to do with two people. The last time I dropped the T56 down, I did this motion alone without the jack. Its amazing how heavy a little 125 pound trans is to hold up for a few minutes after having it lay on your chest.

 

I found it very helpful to tilt the engine back on the mounts when installing trans.
