A shifter extension should lessen shift effort, not increase it. Are you sure you're not bumping off the shift gates when you're trying to shift because you're not sued to the longer throw?

Leafy makes a *GASP* valid point.

Also have you considered boxing in that intake? I've seen decent results from people doing that on the fm msm intake setup.

Looking good btw

Oh, absolutely. It shifts like butter and I really like the new shifter position. By more "effort", what I'm really saying is that because the shifter is much higher I can't rest my arm on the armrest and shift at the same time like you could with the stock setup.

However, for hard driving it's in a perfect position and the shifts are very quick and positive. I think it's a good upgrade overall.

Absolutely on the agenda, along with getting rid of the silicone 180*, as I have concerns that it might begin to collapse once I start running man-levels of boost.

The car is still on very low boost (5psi), but boost creeps towards redline and pulls like a monster. Just working on sorting all the little stuff before turning up the wick!

I think the next upgrade is going to be a carport to protect the girls. Also got some parts (suspension and maintenance parts) for the GTX en route. This thread might turn into a GTX build thread over the winter.

GTX content. Just did a timing belt/waterpump/front main/cam seals/ valve cover/ lower radiator hose / accessory belts overhaul on it. Basically everything on that side of the motor, cleaned the **** out of all the covers and the block back there. Feeling good about it.

I failed to get one with it actually 100% together, but you get the picture. I'll snap a completed bay pic tomorrow.

Awesome pic! Not Uly weather.

Temporary hijack question... My Uly died while riding today. Not sure what the problem is this time, but dash lights are out, turning the key does nothing except make one little relay buzz under the seat.

Not going to ask you to diagnose, just have a general Uly question for you... Do you ride yours off road much? I've been riding a fair amount of graded gravel roads and some small two-track trails. Today this happened and both fork seals **** themselves at the same time (have already replaced them once before).

Do you think the Uly is a good machine for this kind of riding or should I swap it out for something more purpose built, like a KTM or R1200GS ?

What year is your uly? If it's an older one (06-07), the first thing I'd check is the #77 connector (google it!). It's the connector from the stator to the VR, and it often fails. When it fails you'll be riding down the road, the gauges will go wonky, and eventually the bike will die. It won't re-start until you re-charge the battery or put a fresh one in there. Mine failed on my 07 12R over 1500 miles from home and I had to cut out that plug and hardwire it in. No issues since though.

As for the off-road thing, I can't comment much on that. Mines more setup for sport touring and while it often sees dirt roads, it's not abused on them. On road however it's always getting leaned over with lots of WOT fighting with my sportbike buddies. That it does very well while still being comfortable and having baggage so I can ride on long trips with the HD and touring guys.

As for the forks, you might want to consider upgrading to the 08-09 forks as well. The forks are 48mm instead of 43mm and much better on and off road. The newer front end also has the added benefit of a better steering lock and tighter turning radius which helps for offroad as well.

I do think if I were serious about ADV riding I'd get another bike. Don't get rid of the uly, just pick up a dr650 or a KLR or something cheap that is going to be way better offroad and still keep your Buell!

Some quick updates. Miata has been sitting all month due to heavy snows. Big plans for it in the spring though, gonna get an MS3, convert to using the NB timing system vs my 1.6 CAS setup, and wire for seq fuel/inj. Then the plan is to work with vlad on getting it dialed in.

Some GTX updates in the meantime:

I got a new exhaust made for the GTX, full 2.5" with a big magnaflow. You can kinda see it here:

Thing rips now and really breathes. I mean it's still a 7.9:1 compression ratio 1.6 pulling a 2600lb car, so it's hilariously laggy if you punch it below 3,000 rpms or so, but on the top end she really moves.

Some updates coming to this thread. All the parts are ordered, and most are in for a DIY bilstein setup. Gonna consist of:

NB B6 (Hard S) bilsteins from tirerack
Allstar threaded coil perches
QA1 450/300 springs
ISC xtended tophats 1" front 1.5" rear
Torrington bearings
Energy suspension spring isolaters

Very excited about that, tho probably still a month out before I can even think about installing them, as I can't even get the car out of my driveway with the snow we have right now.

I also ordered the following stuff to do an in-dash Raspberry Pi setup. It will go in place of the head unit. operation linux miata is a go, parts on order:

Raspberry Pi 3 B+
Amazon Amazon

7" touchscreen
Amazon Amazon

Sweet case:
Amazon Amazon

Fast SD card
Amazon Amazon

Wireless keyboard
Amazon Amazon

And the piece de la resistance, https://mausberry-circuits.myshopify...upply-switch-1

That last lil guy actually connects to both a constant 12v source from your batter, as well as a switched 12v source from your ignition, and once you turn the key of has a programmable delay so it won't shut off until the key has been off for say, 1 minute, or whatever you program it to. On top of that it runs a bash script that actually sends a shutdown command to the PI so you aren't just cutting power to it abruptly everytime you key the car off.

Just a mockup, still gotta test fit without springs and trim the bumps tips appropriately, then repaint the tophats before final assembly.

This is how I attached the spring isolaters to the isc tophats. Seems solid.

I wouldn't mount the spring isolators to the tophats. The tophat is designed to tilt a bit, and having the isolator fixed prevents that.

Also cut your bumpstops or else you'll be riding on them all the time.

Looking good though! That 323 is pretty neat.

The isolators were done as such after reading and re-reading the better bilstein coilover thread. It seems without something to locate the spring on the tophat things out out of whack and can rub. I am running a lower and upper bushing on the tophat as well, which should allow it enough coaxial movement. The bumpstops are definitely going to be cut, still gotta mockup the setup on the car. I also have some NB tophats if the ISC give me too much travel, so that is all to be determined.

Thanks!

I've been messing with the car quite a bit recently, mostly just trying to get better at tuning and understanding all of the various corrections and settings within MS. Ended up running some calculations to find my injector deadtime was pretty far off, so I adjusted that in MS and had to completely rescale and retune the map. Got that dialed in, and finally worked on getting a good solid idle going. It's probably not perfect, but it's mostly there. Idles amazing when hot, but those heatsoaked restarts suck for a bit after restarting the car. I know people use IAT temp corrections for this, so I might give that a shot.

This is my timing map.

Far from fine tuned but hopefully safe. So far so good, with 1800 miles on the motor. Today I installed my MBC and dialed in a bit more boost. Was tickling 10psi on the gauge, or 150KPA according to my logs. Now keep in mind that ambient pressure here is ~78kpa, so 10psi on the gauge is only 150kpa.

Anywho, she ******' rips and I'm pretty excited. Random 4th gear pull on the way home:

Still much more to come, but for now 200whp will do. She's barely even breaking a sweat, I'm pretty impressed with the power she's making on 150kpa. Very excited to dial in some man level boost on her later this year. I think the curve will look a lot better with a bit more boost dialed in. Looking at the logs the boost doesn't taper off at high rpms but definitely sags a bit in the middle. I was thinking that installing the 10PSI wastegate spring would help with that.

Installed my bilsteins over the last two weekends.

Though I failed to take any decent pics, here's proof!

It also went together with new upper and extended lower ball joints in the front. (Bauer Motorsports)
New inner and outer (R package OEM) tie rods.
New front (TImkin) hubs.
New rear (SADFAB) MR2 hubs.
And replaced the upper knuckle bushings on in the rear.

Now everything is nice and tight! Gotta get it aligned this week, then gonna take it to FM summer camp next weekend if all goes well.

I did notice that I have a wee oil leak. Tried to trace it down and the only places I saw leaking were under the cam seals, around the CAS area, and some seapage around the valve cover and around the oil fill cap.

Kinda making me wonder if I'm not having crankcase pressure issues. I know it's fine at idle, i can pull of the cap and put a piece of paper over the fill hole and it will get lightly sucked onto it. I'm wondering if I'm venting things enough in boost with the oem PCV setup.

No oil ever gets in the catch can. Maybe I'm just overthinking it and need to just address the leaks. I didn't put RTV on the cam seals when putting the engine back together. I don't mean on the actual O shaped seals, but rather the caps where they meet the head.

The FM trip was awesome and the car did great! Just over 800 miles round trip all said and done. Had a ton of fun, the car is smooth as butter with the suspension overhaul and new alignment. Didn't use any oil or coolant, made new friends, and had some great adventures on the road. One of which involved a 2007 or so GT500, which was very surprised by my little miata hanging with him, though he did end up pulling about a car length on me in the end.
