In all seriousness, I'm not particularly interested in running E85. It's cool and all but not practical.

That's what flex fuel is for.

Since we're talking about fuel and det, I can say this...

On my ~9.5: VVT motor, I'm getting very light detonation running 17 degrees advance with 23 PSI boost with 11.0:1 AFRs. I think it's detonating at lower RPM with >100*F air temps. But I don't know yet for sure. With 80*F temps it was fine, no det. This is on 93 Octane.

Plan for now is to pull 2 or 3 degrees and get some det cans hooked up.

Ok serious question....

I have a MS3 PRO, ID1000's with fuel PSI turned up so they spray 1,175cc/min. I have a 255HP pump which is ok for gasoline but I'd need bigger for E85. I have a new fuel system, 6AN lines, regulator, etc, all rated for E85.

What would i have to do to make it flex-fuel? Cause I'd be 1/2 interested in having that capability, or even just mixing in some E85 occasionally to boost the octane.

You'd need a pump, and a GM ethanol content sensor.

Theoretically just a continental gm sensor. Checkout the e85 checklist thread for more info. Then its just tuning.

One big problem that i've had with E85 when i was running mine on it was the uneven distribution of fuel per fillup. Dont get me wrong when i switch to E85 i fill up nothing but E85 tank after tank however the gas stations still have a wide range of ethanol to gasoline in the E85. One tank i'm running 16afr at cruise.. perfect, next tank i'm running 14, tank after that 17afr. Thats the reason why i havent gone back to E85.

Thanks gentlemen! I'm going through that thread right now.

Yeap. It seems there are miata people with MS driving on E85, but it doesn't look like many people actually have it setup as flex-fuel. It's either runs on gas, or E85, and no flex fuel sensor feedback. And without that, AFRs are gonna jump around between batches as E85 is not always 85% ethanol.

Hmm. I'll keep looking, but off hand has anybody gotten MS to work with flexfuel like really well? Well enough you can DD the car and fill up with whatever and it just works?

Yes. Not that I know if on mt.net, but plenty on msextra. Flex fuel sensor will take care of different blends.
Actually DIY has a car running in it.

Like I said in the other thread: everyone "knows" how to do it, everyone "knows someone" that's done it, but I have yet to see a detailed thread on here (or anywhere else) with a proper walk through or feedback.

Just a bunch of armchair experts. (I'm not hating at all, just making observation)

EGO correction can account for a lot of AFR swings. Here we seem to be pretty consistent with the e85, so I can't really complain.

PS: I don't frequent many other miata forums or msextra, so I'm not saying the info isn't out there, I just haven't seen it.

Ed- race fuel is like 8-9 bux a gallon. e85 is under 3. Results are same. None of what we do is "practical", but c'mon now you can't really argue with the results. Unless of course you mean "not practical for people like you that don't have it available"...in which case I agree.

That's what I was afraid of. I'll check on the msextra forums see if I can find some good info there.

I don't like to pioneer crap if I don't have to, and I don't want the capability that bad. But I know I'm leaving power on the table right now so E85 capability just got a lot more interesting to me. But I won't have it with compromises like refuel and retune.... Needs to be turn key and drive after it's tuned.
True about MT.net but go check out msextra, plenty of people running blended tables or everything.

Or $12 per gallon or more at Laguna Seca

But yes, that's of course what I meant. It's not practical for me. For you and how you use your car, it'd almost be silly NOT to run it. And even if I had it, i want the ability to drive this car long distances. It might not have PS and AC but it'll have a full interior and quiet exhaust and really should be reasonably/relatively comfortable for long trips. I'll be driving to MRLS, and hope to go up to some tracks in WA next year.
