Was the free play and total travel adjusted properly?

Ok. So there's good news and there's bad news.

I took the trans off, because that's easy and quick and fun. With the transmission in 4th gear, spinning the input shaft spun the output shaft. So transmission was not obviously broken.

There was no shrapnel in the bellhousing. Fork arm appeared fine, no bends, moved appropriately.

There was nothing immediately apparent to the naked eye with the clutch that was wrong. I took a clutch alignment tool and put it in there and tried to spin things. Things wouldn't spin. Everything looked fine.

Curly suggests I check the diff, so I check the diff, and the diff doesn't check. Diff is toast. Toast as in I can apply the ebrake, and the input flange freely spins. Da fuq? I blow up a Torsen leaving a stoplight?

Cts-V, OS-Giken, or another 3.9 Torsen, what say ye?

TorsenI/II or Tochigi Fuji Super LSD?

This is much sadness, but fairly easy to diagnose, as you did, and there are plenty of options, as you said.

Still sucks though. Sorry man. Another 3.9 Torsen is probably the EZ button.

Assuming it was the diff that shipped oem with the car, it was a 2001 Type II Torsen.

Well OS-Giken was on the list anyway, just way way down the list. Good thing about lists, they can be re-prioritized. Giken it is.

Might as well add a 3.63. You know, while you are in there.

Mazda shipped my tapered front hubs yesterday too, so that's good news.

Hmm maybe. I will have to look at the BMW trans ratios to see what I want, as that's also on the list. Now beneath the differential.

If doing BMW trans then you probably want to head down the getrag route. Or Ford 8.8

You will not miss the Torsen after going clutch type.

It just occurred to me to wonder from which magical pot of gold I was going to fund an os giken with.

The extent of what exactly I need shall be revealed tomorrow.

I have a OSGiken sitting in a complete 4.3 assembly that has just sat around for years. Interested?
