Parts showed up and are awesome. Will be working to get the transmission mounted soon and get the motor back in the car. |
Woooo! Cats for sexy transmission pieces! :likecat:

Looking good!

Long ass day at work but was happy to see this when I came home. I hope to start mounting the transmission this weekend and maybe even get the motor back in the car very soon.
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...81f0ed95d8.jpg Defi 45psi boost gauge for what reason I don't know...wishful thinking I guess https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...ab744aaeb0.jpg IQ3 street dash https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...cdeeaac93c.jpg My tentative setup with the innovate wideband gauge. Also got the can cable to connect the MS ECU to the cluster. I just now need to figure out how to do the sensors -- oil temp, oil pressure, water temp etc. I just don't know which ones need to go to the ECU directly or which can be just sent to the IQ3 cluster. Let the reading continue. My upright showed up too so just need to order the ABS sensor so I can send the VSS to the ECU and then onto the cluster. |

Got the ABS upright mounted. Managed to not fuck any of the ball joints up so I was happy about that. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...11792bcdda.jpg You can see the area requiring modification for the starter. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...1e71f56bc6.jpg Nothing a grinder can't fix. This is my first attempt at using a grinder on anything so forgive the shitness. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...64fdaeaf42.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...8540f2e5af.jpg Starter fits. I dont have an oscillating saw so I had to go with the box motif. So the gaps are a little larger around the starter but overall I think it came out ok. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...ed30ab72cd.jpg Not super sure on this one...My starter isn't OEM but it bolted up fine to the old transmission. Should be fine either way. The other two bolts hold it pretty damn snug. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...6024ebaa73.jpg Just an overhead shot of the progress. Tomorrow Sixshooter is planning to come over and help me get the trans on the engine and put the bitch back in the car. More pictures of the install to follow. |
My starter is only held on with 2 bolts cuz I ran a 1.6 5 speed, as I learned from Lars, standard procedure for a 6 speed swap. I know tons of cars that only have 2 bolts without issues.
Nice progress! :bigtu: |
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...47a478a260.jpg
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...6cbf33b80d.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...61f605468a.jpg So got the clutch/flywheel mounted but hit a roadblock. Im retarded and can't find the gasket/dust shield that goes between the transmission and engine off the original trans. Sadly there is a gap so I will need the shield. Annoying because I was hoping to get the motor and transmission into the car. Anyways heres what the assembly looks like. The flywheel is a nice piece. Very happy with it thus far. Just have to wait on the shield. I ordered one online for cheep. Hopefully be here this week sometime. |

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...993bdec3ab.jpg Finally got the transmission mounted. Clutch alignment tool was off so thanks to sixshooter and eyeballing the bitch we had success. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...31ea6c3b57.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...bb783bfd15.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...753bfb4b1e.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...2d208a79ee.jpg Motor Finally in! Also got the correct SADFab bracket in. Looking good. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...b1e9c07dc6.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...387442c72f.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...2377a5e9ba.jpg Some underneath shots of the gear selector rod and transmission support. Definitely more than a one man job but we were able to get it mounted fairly easily. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...691aa1b623.jpg And the gear selector. With just the transmission in and obviously no hydraulics the selector feels awesome. Cant wait to get the motor running and feel it in action. Today was a big hurdle and really thankful for sixshooter, ryan g, and miata2fast for stopping by and helping me out. Definitely pumped about the progress. |
You have a surprise coming.

Pic dump from my phone. Some of the detail shots really show the beautiful machined parts.
The new shifter has the best feel of any shifter I can remember ever. It's that good. Great delineation between gates and very positive action. Tight, slick action much like a good bolt action rifle. Tony's done a lot of work in a really tight garage. He's been working diligently and has only been held up by small parts missing or not having specialty tools. |
RyanG in the flippy floppies I presume?

Those are some choice parts! How is the vertical position (angle) of the transmission support determined?

Also, turn the shifter around 180 degrees so the groove in the threads is pointed towards the front of the car. That groove is for a set screw built into our shift knob so you can set the position and it won't spin. The knobs didn't ship with the trans kits because they came in with a couple issues that need to be corrected, so they will be sent to everyone separately in a couple weeks or so. |

Preach! A good chunk of the expense of this trans kit was doing the shifter parts right. We incorporated all the upgrades from the premium $400+ BMW short shifter kits into this design. I have many early versions of shifter plates, shifters, and selector rods sitting here as a reminder of how much work went into it.

that's a sweet build. It's fun just watching it happen, especially when good folks from MT are taking part with the know-how to share.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...aa80cae531.jpg Busy week so far at work so just a quick update. Got the radiator put in...must say it does look nice. Also plugged in the oil pressure sender relocation line. I will mount the sender for the racepak to the firewall. Picking up my freshly welded and powder coated rear subframe and differential mount on Friday so should be able to get the rest of the drivetrain on the car. |
You're like the second coming of jeffbucc!

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...e727f9131d.jpg Got my subframe back--freshly welded with the getrag bracket and powder coated the same gray as the other pieces. The upgraded hubs and axles are showed up as well. They are beefy as shit. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...81df75babd.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...c1ff055c9d.jpg Started putting on one side...got tired so Ill finish tomorrow but starting to look the part. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...a8e0c4e63a.jpg Also got a set of PCI seat brackets for my future seats not yet ordered. Look to be a nice piece of kit as well. |
Looking GREAT!
If that is a bottle of Water Wetter I see there, DO NOT use it with any kind of antifreeze. Use Motul MoCool instead, if you really want to use an additive. Certain chemicals in Water Wetter polymerize in reaction to certain chemicals in many modern coolant formulas. That reaction creates a black or brown sludge in the cooling system. See here: https://www.google.com/search?q=water+wetter+brown&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 . |

Managed to get the differential, driveshaft, and axles mounted. They all went together perfectly. Axles are brutal compared to stock. Happy with the way everything came out. |
Diff looks like it's now the lowest point for ground clearance. Looks about 2-3" lower then stock
|
.
|
Looks good to me. I mean we can't really expect to have a nice huge beefy diff and not lose a little clearance. Should be bullet proof :bigtu:
|
I honestly can't remember what kind of clearance I had with the stock diff. Ill have to look at sixshooters for comparison. This is a 95% track car so I don't really care. Thing is a beast to look at.
|
I'm gonna demand launch control vids when it's done. Cause.....this is like the 1 percentile miata that has the drivetrain for it
|
Oh my god this thing is shaping up to be glorious
|
I saw it with my own eyes. It's going to be awesome.

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...e0be20d5a4.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...029bf5b98d.jpg Just a little progress today. Was tired from yesterday. Got the rear brakes mounted. Look nice. Got some brackets I think for the calipers to mount the Emerg Brake cable to the calipers although I don't think they really do anything. Just for show. I need to figure that part out. Made my spark plug wires. Watched Greg on youtube for this one. I think they came out good. Also started putting in the new hoses. Shiny silicone for the win. Im up in the air about the vacuum lines. I have new ones but they are definitely not as stiff as the original ones. Now what I can't decide is if the originals were always that stiff or if this is just a product of being 23 years old. I just don't want to have limp dick vacuum tubing causing issues. Any ideas on this? My questions are likely to go up too lol. I didn't know what I was doing before but with the wiring and shit that Im about to get into I seriously don't have a clue on what Im doing so should be interesting and painful. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...f672f357b9.jpg This is the LS harness ill be using. If I cut off the GM plug is there a miata specific plug I can use or do I just have to wire it directly into the harness? Id like to keep it clean so I can still remove it as a unit. |
Man that is looking good! Did V8R do the rear subframe welding and powder coating for you?

I also wanted to ask if the ground clearance changed at all? You could put a coat of paint on the driveshaft. I guess any rust would be just cosmetic anyway.
I don't think the Getrag really hurts ground clearance, I think it just might be the angle of the pics. We have them in two of our cars and it doesn't looks like it sits low once it's all buttoned up. However I didn't measure before and after. |
Finished buttoning up the rear end of the car. Took a few more pictures of the diff with the rear brace on...its hard to tell but the diff is like 1-2cm below the brace. Not too bad really. Got the rear sway bar mounted as well.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...23bba0ca6a.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...45ee7fc8bf.jpg Snapped a quick shot of the V8 roadsters brake bracket just to give people an idea of the quality. Both front and rear brackets are extremely robust. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...86904ed05e.jpg This baby also showed up. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...c76775d529.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...f3bfe354e3.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...5634489349.jpg Stayed up way too late doing this https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...252a32efa3.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...9483085c45.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...d87e0e2a99.jpg Gonna have to figure out the heat shielding. Turbo damn near sits in the brake master cylinder. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...3a6ec52f8c.jpg Heres with the EBC solenoid on the turbo. I know there was some reservations about this from someone earlier but I actually think it looks good. Guess only time will tell if it works. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...063bcc12c3.jpg Also just to answer some curiosity of a few from earlier I through a light underneath the car so you could get an idea of the room and exposure with the new subframe. Basically its a giant hole and you have a lot of room to access things from below. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...dafd81f0bb.jpg Anywho thats the progress from today. Now I have the long awaited manifold which does look nice. Funny story though--I don't have a downpipe yet... While I wait Ill continue with other projects and start working on the heat protection. I work on the lines and such tomorrow. |

In before collective MT.net wad shooting.
Everything thing looks nice, real nice. Jeffbucc approves and said he's willing to pass his MT.net crown to you. |
This is just assembly- right? You're going to pull everything and paint, then reassemble? (Jeffbucc needs to know)
|
I don't think I have the energy to take the whole car apart again.

Paint doesn't make it faster or more reliable.

don't worry guys he will re-spray the bay when doing the k24 turbo swap
