So there seems to be a serious problem with this EFR turbine housing.

Video incoming soon

Totally in keeping with this thread.

Do you SEE? This. This is my existence.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, the car is at 18psi's house where he is rapidly learning that the emperor has no clothes.

My boundless optimism and general turbo noobishness prevented me from identifying the rattle and it sounds like its about 1,000x worse than I could have expected. Its not dead turbo but it certainly does not sound positive. 18's far more experienced eye is going to get some documentation tonight and we'll see where to go from there.

My money is on the cancer aids Borg Warner EFR 6258 T25 IWG turbine housing (index THAT google!) being far less of a joke than we first thought.

lolz, it's not all that bad. Just has issues, like with the tune having random stuff all messed up from the firmware musical chairs, and then the below.

You're really gonna appreciate this: the car has VTAK.
I am not even a little bit kidding

Basically n/a power all the way to about 6, then VTAK hits with the hammer of thor, and the car lurches forward like a civic can only dream

Demonstration:

So as we've already discused, the problem is the WG/Turbine housing. It's defective.

vid

*edit: picture

It basically opens like 20%, gets stuck. and then stays open, won't close, and won't open further unless you tap it as I've done in the vid.

For the ONE pull that it was closed from the start, the car pulled REAL good lol

Is it a possibility that I'm ritarded and I have the wastegate installed at some terrible angle?

See? I got that one pull with the ridiculous response and then couldn't repeat it. I feel slightly vindicated?

Does anyone with more EFR experience have something to chime in here? @FAB, are you still awake this evening? I'm about to start tagging EFR bros up in here.

I can do a datalog of mine if you want to compare?

There's not much more than about 30% TPS very often though because it just results in wheelspin.

I can't seem to get much less boost than about 1 bar even with very little preload on the gate.

It didn't look like it, but I will triple check it after work today. I didn't see anything binding or stuck on the outside. It appears to be inside.
And yes, "the rattling sound" goes away as soon as you "un-stuck" it and comes back once it get's stuck again, it's the flapper.

On a completely different note:
Did the idle valve test, and it's like 25-50. Does that look awfully small of a range to anyone else? It's the stock IACV on a Skunk2 TB

Oh that's interesting. My assumption was that the flapper was catching on something. Weird.

Values sound totally normal to me.

Has the wastegate actuator been replaced? I know its not likely the problem, but its also the easiest thing to replace, and it would suck to tear this all apart and find out its the actuator.

it's not the actuator cause the actuator moves in/out fine.

the values are way closer than all stock-iacv NB's I've tuned but that probably doesn't mean anything.

If it helps, the range on mine (01 NB8C) was 18 - 72.

Haha, when we hooked up the bike pump I questioned the angle and I thought you were the one who convinced me that it didn't need that much throw? We were exhausted and had been drinking, please don't interpret this as me pointing fingers, you know that ain't my style

It's a brand new Borg Warner "Low" actuator for the 6258. I also have a "Medium" actuator here at the house I could overnight if we thought it would be worth anything.

But I tend to agree with 18, the actuator works and we know it works, plus its the easiest thing in the world to test. Something else in the system is binding, the question is what exactly.

I owe him so many bags of coffee.

Honestly, I think its just the Skunk2 TB. The air path for the idle air bypass is all jacked up with weird passages and steps and crap. It would not surprise me in the least.

Then I can use a EWG on the inlet piping to vent excess boost!

I saw your PM. There is so much play in that actuator... First I'd try to rotate the CHRA like you talked about in the PM and see if it's still binding but I really think you need to pull the turbo housing and get an inside look.
