diy "turbo no hit block" '00 BP miata

Noticed I've never open a topic of my car...
short story here: December 2013 miata is too slow, even if it's 1.8l 200.000+ km engine saw mcm "how to turbo", they make it very easy let's find out! what I thought: I want quick spool and low threshold, let's take an .35 turbine with .33 compressor! why don't leave oem exhaust? it's turbo, exhaust line is less important than a NA engine! wanna stay under 10psi, the i/c is only a good upgrade, but not necessary dunno what a flow chart is result: http://i40.tinypic.com/3sfgh.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img24/1149/eisw.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img443/2082/k83x.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img811/9900/t9oh.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/18/kske.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img19/6358/f1h4.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img706/3969/8vf2.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/534/lryt.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/823/ljql.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/843/efig.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/716/rfss.jpg first run... 1.5 bar wastegate and no emb, just oem ecu :vash: ended...... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/513/3zg0.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/811/77m9.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/41/ll2n.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/577/lfzt.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/197/0job.jpg one week later goes BOOOOOM :loser: cylinder n°2 was prone to detonation http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...0/853/nazk.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...0/703/6dv6.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/42/wrru.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/14/wssx.jpg After that I began to read, I found the faq, I bought the corki bell's "maximum boost" and when my ideas began to be a little bit clearer (3 months later) I admitted that all that work was crap. Really crap. Now the true diy project I started my new project on april 2014 my new goals: high boost threshold due to 10:1 CR reason: reduce egt when non in boost, expecially because I ran LPG, less torque in boost but good power. low boost, around 8 psi compressor: high efficiency at high revs (4500 rpm and more) I chose a chrubo based on GT2860R manifold: studied for high speed gases, begi S4 shoud work for me. expected power around 200-250 bhp ...continue |
well that went pretty much as expected
thanks for taking pics though, that was entertaining :) You're gonna want to support that feed line before it breaks and causes a fire |
I would also take off the wrap on the manifold. It will trap more heat inside. The manifold is already prone to failure, may as well not expedite that.

Once I saw that mcm episode I was waiting for more builds to pop up. Your 2nd time was very entertaining. Nice DIY setup, trial & error PSSHHHHHH :bowrofl: 0psi |

The first attempt was the exact result i expected after people want to turbo a miata after the MCM episode.

on maximum boost I've seen no changes: 650°C (very low afr) are this manifold so crap? |
Nope. Not crap. Top quality. Obviously, that's why it is so super cheap.
Wait a minute.... |
What are you using ECU wise?
|
he's using aidz

He's asking what standalone ECU you're using to control the car to go along with the turbo setup you've pieced together so you don't immediately blow your motor again.

since I don't have a det-can the advance must be conservative, right? I'm building one: when it's finished I put some photos here, and maybe a video if my gopro wants to record

I'm thinking to put an ms2 pnp from diyautotune, but I'm a little bit scared: I have to remap the entire range of the engine: vacuum, boost, idle, cold start, hot start, advance vs water temp, advance vs knock sensor and many other maps I know that autotune helps a lot, but dunno if I can :ugh: |

you realize they come with basemaps right?

I've read though this thread a few times and I've almost posted every time. I have a love hate with it. He is doing some pretty impressive work with some pretty shitty parts. I'm not gonna lie. I want to see it go through its entire life cycle out of curiosity. We need weekly inspections with comments on miles driven & what not.
Having a proper ecu is pretty much mandatory with Turbo. It makes everything sooo much easier. Especially when your bandiads start failing and you have to troubleshoot that crap. Also when I saw the DIY manifold I was like right on. Then you went rogue on us and ebayed it. That original manifold you made was probably fine just needed to be cleaned up a bit. |
OP, you are moving along a steep learning curve pretty well IMHO.
The funny thing is that a proper standalone ECU solution is often less difficult to work with than 'bandaid' or 'aids' solutions that simply fool the stock ECU. My last project was far more difficult and frustrating with an SAFC based management setup than it was a programmable ECU that was very similar to the MS stuff. Plus that would let you get rid of the AFM, which is not doing you any favors. Glad to see that you are now opening up the exhaust, as it is actually far more important for a turbocharged vehicles overall performance than most NA applications. |
I wish the op just stuck with the log manifold, its better than the ebay one. But based on the discoloration I bet it just needs a quick shave at the machine shop to make it flat again.

Perhaps, but the MCM guys did use some engine management... even tried to use a Megasquirt but the one the bought on EBay didn't work right, so ended up using something else... they didn't try to run ALLOFIT on the stock ECU :giggle:
Keith As much as I shit on haltech in the past I'd choose them over aem in a heartbeat because one day we couldnt get the formula car to run on e85. It was 4am and we had a race we needed to leave for in 2 hours and we called the australian number (Home HQ) for haltech and that ausie was cool as fucking shit and got us going in time. Nicest car part CS guy ever. |

I have to admit that you've convinced me
ms2 is now my next step only... the pnp for 98-00 BP seems to have different connector... I think the problem is that my car is eudm vs diyautotune's usdm however, nothing earth-shattering. Btw the car is really doing her job, ran 1000 miles (it's my daily car), zero traction issues (except in 1st gear) and nice spool, but in cruise water temp continue to rise, over 100°C. I thought the problem was i/c too low respect water radiator so I tried to resolve with a pvc sheet: https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1405015006 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1405015006 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1405015006 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1405015006 yesterday I tried it and... it works!! cruise temp is now 80°C, and in boost rises maximum at 90°C I removed the charcoal canister and fixed that horrible upper water line too http://i1379.photobucket.com/albums/...psfe602de9.jpg Attachment 184848 |

MS3 from Reverant, since he's in Athens I think he can handle the difference between usdm and eudm.
Thanks! Btw https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1405194063 fully satisfied :giggle: |
OK so I know you might have found someone in Italy but...
SERIOUSLY. Get it from Reverant. Though I don't have first hand experience with him, I've read post after post of people being extremely satisfied with his product and his support. |

Though I don't have first hand experience with him, I've read post after post of people being extremely satisfied with his product and his support. the diypnp from autotune is only for usdm so I was thinking: -buy ms2 kit from autotune, upgrade it for the miata NB and eudm connector from Italy and create my version of ms2 -buy a diy kit for eudm from reverant (dunno if he sell kits) I have to wait until I have 30 messages to send PM, right? |
HOLY FUCKING SHIT BALLS ON A TITTY SPARKLER. Reverant makes his own professional plug and play megasquirts that are not at all related to DIY autotune and he lives in fucking greece so hopefully he knows how to build one for an EUDM wired car considering he only makes them for miatas and lives in fucking greece and drives a miata with one of his ecus in it.
|
Seriously, Reverent.
|
Have you considered a Reverant ECU?

Get your MS3 basic from Rev.... Seriously. It comes with base maps, and a guy that seriously is Duke Nukem in real life.
|
You may not know this, but there's a guy on here named Reverant who makes Megasquirts for the Miata. You should consider getting your MS from Reverant.
---- Ok, seriously though, i started with an MS2E I got on here used for $500 from reverant, and I was so amazingly impressed with the ease of installation and the support he gave me (even though I hadn't given him a penny) that I sold it and bought a brand new MS3 Basic from him simply to support him and his business. He sent me an email asking me about a dozen questions on what EXACTLY my setup was, and when I got my MS I plugged it and fired up my car. |
my next step MUST be rev ms2 pnp
but now I can't afford that cost because I've just buy rx8 injectors, a present for my mother, I've broken the pcv, an old friend came in from out of town! someone stole my car! there was an earthquake! a terrible flood! locusts! IT WASN'T MY FAULT, I SWEAR TO GOD!!! |
srsly, I have to wait to have enough cash...
This Sunday I stop the car for some works to do, including rebuild the alternator (baaad bearings), change the injectors, new fuel pump and fuel filter, tb cleaning, pcv change (was'nt a joke) and other easy stuff prepare yourself for a lot of photos... |

what are we looking at? That almost looks like the compressor outlet pipe, but that means the pipe with what looks like the IAT sensor in it is going to the compressor inlet, which is wrong wrong wrong.
|
We're looking at a popped-off charge hose.
Need to put a bead on that tube or it'll keep slipping off. At least rough it up. Also: What Leafy said. |
Why the o2 clamp?

When I can buy rev ms2 first step must be gm iat sensor with bung right before throttle body and obviously afm removal, but until that I have to read wrong intake temperature (hotter than real)... |

Also I am running LPG, and this particular O2 clamp do three things: when on gasoline is a simple O2 clamp (1.1 bar absolute pressure and 2 seconds delay before return real O2 signal) setted to 0.45V when on LPG a bypass on afm mod. is active (420cc rx8 injectors required afm modification) and when in boost automatically switches to gasoline activating the O2 clamp too and removing afm bypass |

compression test today:
cold engine: I couldn't warm up because intake line is at the workshop wot without spark plugs, ignition and injection connectors disconnected very strange results 27 bar average (390 psi) :eek5: pic related: https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1408614569 cyl n°1 is 5 cyl n°2 is 6 and so on after first check battery was low, crank was lower and readings too but... I've read about 200 psi for a new 1.8 engine: this is almost double pressure! |
I think you did something wrong.

I have enough money for the rev ms2!! :brain: but I don't have my tune driver anymore... he is in canada for a mounth :giggle: Oh, and I'm preparing an ebc with an ALLOFIT button for 12 psi, I hope it will reduce the boost threshold http://i1379.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1d3934db.jpg aaand it's time for a cold air induction, precisely a filter box worst problem is: I have no time for this hobby :dunno: |
turbo started to whistle when in high boost (10+psi)
I checked for leaks, but all seems right when I checked for shaft play, I notice a little play, around 0.5-1mm (0.019-0.04 inches) Is it normal? I don't remember that when I installed it... |
