the angles can play tricks on you. but think, if the cam was off a tooth, and I rotate it back, that puts 20 teeth between the marks.

Yeah, it's always tough to take a pic of the timing belt stuff that doesn't look off.

This had me thinking back to the injector dead time issue, so I started looking into it a little more. The information that I have found suggest that the dead time is quite low, even for large injectors. My injector dead time (RC750) at the 13.6V I logged should be about .682ms

that's why I have the two close up shots of the pulleys. I held the camera straight on and made sure not to angle it at all.

IIRC, thats about where y8s has his deadtime set for RC550s. even still, all the deadtime does is add an artbitrary number to the end of your calculated pulse witdh. even if set incorrectly, the car will run normally if you've tuned your req_fuel and VE table for it.

That makes sense. http://injector-rehab.com/shop/lag.html

From the dead time thread. I am wondering if you were on the right track, but went the wrong direction with your dead times. What happens if you shorten your deadtime and adjust your VE table to compensate?

trigger offset will NOT correct the incorrect installation of the timing belt on the crank pulley. you'll still have both cams advanced by a tooth.

and I should point out that advancing my intake cam with the VVT causes the idle to suck hard nuts.

justs fwiw, the idle is no better with this slight varience (if any) then when the crank was pointing at 10° when the cams were in alignment...

But I can easily go back out and make sure to reset it and see what happens.

wouldn't that be the same as bumping my trigger angle back up to compenstate? am i right? or it that still enough to maybe cause my issue?
No because the timing relationship between the crank and cams is fixed mechanically. It looks like your intake cam is off a tooth to me.

ah yes.

but how could it be off a tooth if there at 19 teeth between the marks...maybe i just need to tighten the tensioner more? that would ultimately bump the mark back...but it is still possible the crank is off 2° (1 tooth worth?) when the cams are aligned. I'll report back when i become unlazy enough to reset it.

because the distance between the cam gears with teeth at 12 o-clock won't change. If the gear rotates one tooth you can still get 19 belt teeth. The 19 teeth bteween the marks tells you that you have the belt tensioned appropriately.

I'm starting to get interested in this again because that is exactly how my cam marks look and of course my idle has always been exactly like yours right now.

I dont know how many times i've done the timing belt on B6 engines, like practically a million. I am never able to get the marks any better than that and still have 19 teeth between the cogs. In the car or out it doesn't matter, I can never get any better.

I'm as whiz at TBs but I'm only questioning myself now because I can't figure this BS out.

Did you just change the angle of your camera for that pic? Thats what I hate about it, you can move your head up/down left/right and things will look lined up or totally off.

Leakdown test would have taken less time than all these posts (Ducks for cover)

are you including the time it takes to acquire the air compressor and leakdown tester?
