And I've met the owner. He's a nice guy but he knows "Jacques Merde" about his cars. He pays a shop to do whatever and call him when it's done. That's fine, but I'd rather give props to the guy that built it.

I remember back when it was 616hp and in that other chassis (yellow NA iirc). I always assumed that he added a 200 shot of nitrous and that was where the 816 number came from. Just an estimate.
What is odd is the that nitrous will make more power on boost than naturally aspirated. So I would really think they would want to confirm that shit and not just rely on estimation. If it was really a 200 shot it would probably result in well over 200hp gained.

Same guy has a street MSM with a really big turbo and tubular manifold that supposedly made around 425whp or something. It looks possible until you realize it has a stock 6-speed.

I mean you can make that power on a dyno with a 5 speed. Its gonna be real damn hard to break 5th in a 6 speed (or 4th in a 5 speed).

sixshooter 12-28-2014 01:48 PM

I guess you are right. I just thought it sounded implausible at the time.

I don't think with high hp the 1:1 ratio has anything to do with power holding. the mechanical advantage of the transmission isn't the same as mashing 400+ftlbs through gears that are too small, regardless of ratio (for dyno pulls)

Its also about how power comes on.... big turbos are surprisingly easy on drivetrains compared to a smaller turbo running the same power that comes on like its on a switch. I.e. if you have a delta of 250ftlbs surging over a few hundred RPM when compared to normal loads, your going to have some problems, be it tires or drivetrain.

Leafy 12-30-2014 10:56 AM

There's no gears to strip off in the 1:1 ratios. 3rd in the 5 speed and 4th in the 6 speed are just the weakest gears in the set, thats why they break. It doesnt matter how abruptly the power comes on, its all about the torque being pushed through the gears causing them to fatigue fail.

shlammed 12-30-2014 11:09 AM

I'll add to the DIY thread here.... Im Hella Busy.... lots on the go. The Miata manifold market is loving my work... I have a few hotside kits with exhaust to finish and then I have 2 more manifolds and downpipes as well as an intake manifold to build.

So much argon, so little time.

Having not played with transmissions, I will take your word for it, but if there were no gears to shear off how does the transmission not become locked in 4th all the time? (aka direct drive aka no gears to be weak)

There has to be a "gear" of some sort, but the ratio is 1:1 with equal amounts of teeth.

of course there is. but as far as i know, its more of an inline toothed clutch type mechanism than a set of counter rotating gears, so its much stronger. power is only transmitted to the counter shaft in 1-3 and 5th.

i made some fender braces

Different colors=different bracing characteristics. Your car is gonna warp!

A little ashamed posting this below hellafab stuff but here are some pictures of my recent manifold build:

It may not be Hellafab, but Hellafab had to start somewhere. Keep it up. A lot of us who can't fab anything at all like this, whether because of lack of tools, or talent, or both, like to see creations by mere mortals :)

Thanks Möbius.

Next project will be back braces for the ultrashield seats I bought. Hi_I'm_Sean cut me some pieces and tubing so I can match what he did. Sadly the TIG I used is back in portland so these will be welded with my HF shitbox.

he's absolutely right, don't be ashamed man, if it works and doesn't break then it's something to be proud of as a 1st manifold

here was my 1st one as well to make you feel better:

Pretty sure I ran across yours somewhere along the way in my research. Wayne_curr, wittyworks, and sturovo were pretty much the main resources. They have some incredibly helpful stuff out there.

Did you ever end up using a turbo crane or anything to take stress off of the manifold? Did it ever break?

Mobius 01-04-2015 02:08 AM

Curly built one and has pictures on here somewhere.

Saw Curly's in person but haven't found any pictures of it. I'll dig through his build thread one of these days.

Why no vertical brace between the arms? A boxed brace is much stronger.

No brace or crane.
Never broke.

What I did have a serious problem with though, was flange warping.
Both the turbo and head flanges warped twice. I re-surfaced them and they still warped again.

No idea why. Bought the flanges from Weirtec, they were 3/8 iirc, guess I shoulda gone 1/2
