Welding tip of the day.
You can not weld titanium and stainless together. You can also not weld titanium and mild steel together. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...71d5326552.jpg |

Pretty sure you can friction weld too. And here is mr. tig doing it.
TIG Welding Stainless Steel to Titanium | TIG Time - YouTube And he cracks it too lol. |
So he also proved my point.
Friction welding is great and all, but how many of us are going to friction weld exhaust tubing together? Or friction weld anything for that matter. As he said, "there just not weldable together". In my picture i did the exact same thing he did with the 308l stainless filler on 304l tubing to the titanium plate. On the other side of the small plate was 316l plate steel, that did not crack but the stress sounds it made after i was done welding told me i would not hold up under any type of test, even if i couldn't get it to crack. I did end up breaking it off once i put the vice grips on it and bent it off. Mine actually held better than Mr.Tigs did, i had to hammer on it with a clamp a few times before the crack formed. You can see the hit marks on the round part in my picture. |
What about letting it cool slowly. Sand?

But maybe. Want me to try it? |
Kind of. I know with cast iron you have to let it cool really slowly or it cracks.
|
Well, the internet doesn't have much information on it. If i find some concrete at work tomorrow i'll do it in the name of science.
I know i have sand, so i can always use that too. |
I welded one with 308 filler and one with Ti filler. The SS filler one cracked in the sand. The Ti filler one held good until i hit
it. |
I also tried to friction weld stainless and titanium. But the lathe in the shop sucks major balls and spins at a sad 1400rpm which is way to slow.

My version of a diy custom manifold, obviously still work in progress. Runner length is something i still thinking about So that pic on the bottom is what it could like, but it could change a little

Fabbed up my IC piping, had my buddy weld because I can only stick aluminum together at this point.
This is is my first set of IC pipes, I know I could have run the hot side better but didn't want to buy more pipe, so I made what I had work. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...0aeb49a36.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...2b0d3dd67.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...56629696c.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...14495f5e0.jpeg |
First test fitment seems to be alright. Plenty of space left, now i have some realworld dimension to make the plenum. But i think my computer model fits perfectly in there
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...14226799a0.jpg For the velocity stacks i tried some 3D printing and turned out pretty good, very stiff part. The inner part is so i can mount it on a drill and shave the part to a smooth finish https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...ad6a3891b4.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...76059adea6.jpg |

How are you planning to make the plenum section? Sheet metal?
|
A mix of a tube and bends cut in half and some sheet metal and all welded together
|
Do you have access to a lathe, manual or otherwise?
